Kinkajous - Being Waves (September 17, 2021 Running Circle)

Kinkajous return with their highly anticipated new album, ‘Being Waves’. Stretching genre and medium boundaries, it leads listeners to explore their own concepts of reality and perception. The new record marks an evolution from Kinkajous’ acclaimed debut, Hidden Lines (2019, Running Circle). This release, engineered by long-term collaborator Brendan Williams, gives life to a wide aural landscape made up of rich and diverse musical influences. With its blend of acoustic and orchestral instrumentation, analogue synthesis and sampling processes, there is an elaborate yet organic feel to the music that makes Being Waves the five-piece band’s most introspective work to date.

Led by drummer/producer Benoît Parmentier and saxophonist/clarinetist Adrien Cau, Kinkajous have earned a reputation for conjuring up a powerful and cinematic sound, being described by CLASH as “a key part of the British music landscape”. Joined by Jack Doherty (synths), Maria Chiara Argirò (keys) and Andres Castellanos (bass), their live performances are exhilarating yet intimate, reflecting the band’s outstanding musicianship and versatility.

Benoît and Adrien recount Being Waves as being “the result of a deep-dive trying to unfold layers of realities. An attempt to play with our own beliefs, our own illusions”. This motif is present throughout the record, with its intricate orchestration and production techniques that often prompt listeners to question whether what they are hearing is what it appears to be, continuously challenging their perspectives and preconceptions.
‘Being Waves’ traverses broad musical dimensions through carefully crafted soundscapes. With ‘Still (Drifts)’ as the first single, listeners were introduced to the band’s ambitious vision for the record. Its lush textures and energetic pace build to a climactic moment, destined to be performed in large halls. The track explores the themes of self and togetherness; it is about trying to share a story while drifting away from one another and seeing the world through unique and individual sets of eyes. The second single ‘Convolution’ is inspired by the way we relate to the world around us. It moves forward as a unit, although it is composed of pieces that are trying to push away from one another, creating an ever-evolving sense of tension and release. Interwoven with disorienting production and entangled synths, the ample sax and string lines establish a balance, conjuring highly evocative sound palettes.

‘Being Waves’ travels through multiple realities and touches on ideas of certainty, belief and identity. With alluring couplings between electronic and instrumental sounds, Kinkajous portray fascinating scenes with unique finesse and energy, making the band truly unmatched.

Kevin Jackson - Elevation (September 17, 2021)

"Kevin Jackson released a new single in June that brought forth some added recognition to his already established and growing musical portfolio. As the summer gets underway and we get ready for Fall in a few months, he is looking forward to the release of this album under the same name, Elevation. It’s a beautiful, energetic and noteworthy compilation of songs that do exactly what the title describes...it will elevate, connect, and inspire the listener.

I anticipate that Elevation will be successful and revered amongst his fans, peers, and the Smooth Jazz Radio community".

Ladybird Orchestra - Fly (September 17, 2021 Jazzland recordings Norway)

Jazz sextet Ladybird Orchestra plays melodic jazz with catchy melodies and expressive lyrics, but is also completely unafraid of solid, exploratory improvisation.

The band started as a songwriting collaboration between vocalist Lisbeth-Anita Grimsø Olsen and pianist Liv Andrea Hauge in 2016. After working as a duo for a year, they wanted to test the song material with some of their favorite musicians, a band that would later become the Ladybird Orchestra : bassist Karl-Erik Horndalsveen, tenor saxophonist Runa Husøy, alto saxophonist John Rune Jakobsen and drummer Veslemøy Narvesen. Together they create songs at the crossroads where the composed meets the free. With musicians from bands such as Kongle Trio, Mall girl, Damata, Ensemble Eliassen and Bye Lila, the band draws inspiration from diverse musical sources.

The band has played on various jazz stages, such as Victoria and Herr Nilsen, and in the spring of 2020, the band was selected as one of eight bands to participate in the Norwegian Jazz Forum's competition Jazzintro. "Fly", their debut album was recorded at Ocean Sound in Giske, and tells stories of wonder, journeys through the jungle and the garden, taxi rides and lost love.

Julien Stella / Bastien Weeger - NOSAX NOCLAR Rëd Sisters (September 17, 2021 Yolk Records)

Bastien Weeger and Julien Stella have found with this project a scope they didn’t expect to be so large at the beginning. Each piece, each repertoire is an opportunity to explore the art of dialogue as a duet. Two blowers whirl around, accompanying each other.

The band is able to reach anybody’s attention for their altogether simple and powerful moving stories. Bastien Weeger and Julien Stella, more humble than they should be, are rich in a musical culture without boundaries.

Kahmsïn, their first album, was inspired by Celtic (Ireland), Berber or Balkan music traditions to compose freely, with their own material. Rëd Sisters, their second album, continues to reclaim global roots, Armenia too.

NoSax NoClar album Rëd Sisters was recorded in May 2021 at Peninsula Studios in Sarzeau (France).

This second album comforts the promises overheard in Kahmsïn and opens to new paths for this visionary duo. The two pieces with their unusual set up, have no other choice than to reinvent their music, looking for new possibilities; tones, harmonies and rhythm.

Relentlessly searching for new ways to evolve, they use only acoustic sources, constantly changing roles, instruments (alto and sopranos saxophones, bass clarinet et clarinet) textures, parts, solos, all intertwined together, making ever-changing atmospheres that highlight each tracks in their own very personal way. Their pirouettes occupy the field, without a safety net, almost making us forget that there are only the two of them playing.

2020 winner of Jazz Migration project, led by the AJC network which identifies young talents from today's jazz scene, NoSax NoClar is undoubtedly one of the revelations of the year!

Marcus Klossek Electric Trio - Time Was Now (September 2021)

There are a number of ways to tell stories: by word of mouth, declaimed and sung, as written words, carved in stone, finely drawn with quill and ink, thrown by artists on canvas in many colors. But what happens when a guitarist simply reaches for his instrument, keeps his lips closed, but moves the strings and, with one go, creates images in front of the mind’s eye that open all emotional pigeonholes and radiate in tones that one could hardly have imagined previously?

Marcus Klossek is such a musical “griot”, one belonging to those almost extinct tribal wise men who did not simply have to learn their craft. It was present in his genetic code from the start. However, the messages of the Berliner with the receding hairline are by no means from a nostalgia-transfigured past. Klossek uses the Fender Telecaster, the archetype of electric guitar, as a mouthpiece. In doing so, he follows a path taken by well-known musicians such as Jimmy Bryant, Ed Bickert, Bill Frisell, Mike Stern, Jim Campilongo and Jakob Bro. Jazz purists may turn up their noses at the electric touch of Fender Telecasters, but anyone who listens to Klossek and his Electric Trio with Derek Scherzer (drums) and Carsten Hein (bass) for just a few seconds immediately feels that a highly vital and lively improvisation heart beats in their midst.

Also on his new CD “Time Was Now”, the trio develops dynamic rhythms and enchanting melodies that unfold miraculously in front of the audience. Like chapters of a novel or verses of complex poetry, Marcus Klossek, as a guitarist and composer, manages with his pieces to let an intensely and plastically perceived structure of action evolve in the mind’s eye. As if sketched by hand, sound images of an amazing density and enormous versatility are created: powerful groovy like in “Up close”, sweet bluesy like in “Done”, swinging fast as lightning like “One Of Us”, wistfully melancholic like in “Let Me Know”, lyrically dreaming like in “August 30”, fiercely rocking like in “Black Year” or full of subtle tension like in “Unexpected Skies”.

With his eighth album, Marcus Klossek has succeeded in creating a masterpiece that will fire the enthusiasm not only of die-hard guitar aficionados. He strives single-mindedly forward without leaving his two congenial partners even one centimeter behind. Every note really sits exactly where it belongs on “Time Was Now”. Klossek, Scherzer and Hein transform their years of experience into a concise, coherent cycle of stories in which everything seems perfectly balanced: the curved lines, the well-dosed explosions and the dramaturgic concept. In this way, a collection of precise timing and noticeable joy of playing can unfold in front of the mind’s eye without any problems and without any moralizing undertones of purists, in which humorous country and surf quotes flow directly into the jazz heritage of Wes Montgomery or John Scofield. Such a matter of course can only arise from the deep conviction that stories without words captivate people everywhere. High addiction factor!

Vera Kappeler / Peter Conradin Zumthor - Herd (September 17, 2021 INTAKT RECORDS)

With Herd, pianist Vera Kappeler and percussionist Peter Conradin Zumthor present on Intakt Records their long-awaited second duo album after their acclaimed 2014 debut Babylon-Suite.

Kappeler/Zumthor is an exceptionally innovative duo. They are bubbling over with ideas, yet take their time to develop new programs, working with the utmost care. They are oriented towards international innovation in the crossover area of jazz and new music and have a huge artistic potential, which the two of them exploit brilliantly on Herd. Their common sound cosmos surprises with playfulness and a peculiarity that reaches into the bizarre. With exceptional musical and technical skills, they have, over the years developed their very own musical language and are masters at telling stories with their music.

Author Reto Hänny writes in the literary liner notes "What else is there to say except that I like this music and to repeat it endlessly; it sings, it sings, again and again, touching, stirring, heartbreakingly beautiful."

Borderlands Trio with Stephan Crump, Kris Davis, Eric McPherson - Wandersphere (September 17, 2021 INTAKT RECORDS)

Following the stunning debut album "Asteroida", the New York trio Borderlands with Stephan Crump, Kris Davis and Eric McPherson release a double CD with four improvisations which range in length from just under twenty to over forty minutes. Recorded during the coronavirus pandemic in New York in 2020, the music contrasts the New York mood of isolation with an uncommon passion for playing, intensity and musical intimacy.

Chicago/Berlin jazz critic Peter Margasak writes in the liner notes: “The works float, roil, swing, breathe, rush, and sparkle without every revealing any sort of hesitation or falling into a rut. The musicians don’t follow one another and they eschew glib reaction. Instead, they sit with the flowing ideas, thinking ahead about where the music could go. They play a long game with their spontaneity. These four amazing explorations reflect a kind of total music.” He writes full of enthusiasm: “The Borderlands Trio engage in four mind-boggling explorations here – patiently, generously, and almost telepathically building a unified sonic architecture that celebrates the act of collective improvisation as profoundly, as beautifully, and as completely as anything I’ve ever heard.” McPherson turned 50 on the day of the session, and calls the experience “the ultimate birthday gift.”

Guitarist Bob Gorry, bassist Pete Brunelli, and drummer Peter Riccio have played together through the years in many different settings but never recorded as a trio prior to GoBruCcio. They draw from their wide variety of musical experiences during five fascinating free improvisations. Their music progresses through varied movements with one player often taking the lead, the others following and building on his ideas, and then one of the musicians shifting gears to take the group improvisation in a surprisingly different direction.

While the trio’s music is essentially free jazz, it also includes aspects of progressive rock, contemporary classical music, and the blues, all blended together in a unique fashion. On the opener, “Safecracker,” guitarist Gorry starts out being first among equals with Brunelli and Riccio providing a strong forward momentum that becomes a solid groove. The music then becomes freer and furious, and the resulting group interplay is full of passion.

“Always Somewhere” visits several musical areas before ending up at a fast tempo. “Magic City Madness” has a bit of walking bass, gets a little boppish in an abstract way and ends up hinting at Ornette Coleman-type free bop. The quirky “Javelina” begins and ends almost like a pre-planned rhythmic composition but contains plenty of free form excitement in between. As with the other selections, the closing “Papillon,” which at one point becomes a ballad, keeps listeners guessing and stimulated by the explorative yet perfectly coherent ensembles.

The trio of Bob Gorry, Pete Brunelli and Peter Riccio on GoBruCcio prove to be greater than the sum of their parts, constructing a consistently intriguing and colorful set of unpredictable yet satisfying music.

Agustí Fernández / Pablo Ledesma / Mono Hurtado - Coghlan Dreams (2021 Sirulita Records)

The music that Fernández, Ledesma, and Hurtado play on Coghlan Dreams (the album is named as such because the pianist met the saxophonist and bassist in the latter's house, a few blocks from Coghlan station in Buenos Aires) goes down unexpected paths, as usually happens in dreams. Here is a music that moves from intensity to meditation, from "conventional" technique to extended technique. It's music that sometimes creates spaces that are filled with rough timbres and at other times is organised around a melodic sketch. The only instruction is "know how to relate to one another". Each musician should comply with the others, knitting a dynamic weave in which each one is a soloist and an accompanist at the same time. This is what happens on Coghlan Dreams.

The precise articulations, the fervor with which the trio tackles unexpected intervals, and the successive rhythmic impulses reveal technical skill that rises to the challenge of searching for new forms in the same time frame as the music. The remarkable interconnection that a Majorcan (by origin) and Catalan (by residence) and two Argentines have achieved in this set of 12 tracks speaks to the confidence with which they have managed to cultivate the art of playing freely over the length of their careers. But this doesn't explain why at times you feel like shouting "Eureka!" when a brief line from the sax is perfectly replicated by the piano, or when the bass holds a bowed note that creates a tonal axis over which the sax and piano vibrate. It's not only about playing "free", with no guidelines.

It's about playing free with others who also do so, completely unaware of the direction that the music will take, music that arises from an aesthetic coexistence. Unpremeditated interaction demands real-time understanding. This indeed happens in all kinds of music played by more than one performer, but perhaps free improvisation is the musical experience that requires the most empathy, since all agreements spring from the evolution of the sound itself.

Shay Hazan Quintet - Nuff Headlines (September 14, 2021 Chant Records)

Bassist and composer Shay Hazan is a mainstay on the vibrant Tel Aviv jazz scene. His new album Nuff Headlines finds him in the leadership role, a rare (although not unheard of) position for a bass player. The quintet is filled out by the two-horn duo of Tal Avraham on trumpet and Eyal Netzer on saxophone, along with Milton Michaeli on piano and Haim Peskoff on drums. Hazan’s musical roots spread far and wide into the magical realm of Moroccan Gnawa music (Hazan often plays gimbri, the traditional three stringed skin-covered bass lute), the new wave of hip hop, and the 1960's Chicago free jazz and human rights movement. These roots all feed the single organism of the band, with Hazan leading from the bottom, anchoring and propelling the music with a force only a bassist can provide.

Allison Miller & Jane Ira Bloom - Tues Days (September 2021 Royal Potato Family)

In March and April of 2021 soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom and drummer Allison Miller came together on five Tuesdays in March and April of 2021 to record some improvised sax and drum duets to see what might happen. They didn’t set out to make an album - they just wanted to play because they needed to improvise any way that they could. They played with complete abandon, performing remotely from their home studios in New York City in the reality of the world of 2021. Tues Days is the result of those recordings that now appear on Bloom’s Outline label and are available through Miller’s Bandcamp site, mixed and mastered by bassist Mark Helias with breathtaking fidelity. It’s a musical duet saturated in a kaleidoscope of color. The music is spontaneous composition at its best by two masterful improvisers – energetic, tactile, and alive.

Miller’s multi-colored array of percussion augments her drumset in exquisite counterpoint to Bloom’s signature tone on the soprano sax. The music is both rhythmic and deeply lyrical - drum and sax dancing around one another until their song is sung. The compositions are Bloom and Miller making-it-up live and in the moment, taking you on a wild ride through their musical universe. From the adventurous journey of “The Wild Frontier” to the unpredictable “A & J’s Test Kitchen,” get ready for Tues Days - a story for your ears that will have your head spinning in wonder.

Tibor Debreceni - Blue Waltz (September 2021)

Jazz musician, composer, music producer, guitarist, pianist based in Budapest, Hungary.

"I compose, play and record all instruments, mix and master by myself in my home studio in Budapest, Hungary.

Main instruments: guitar, piano, bass. Instruments in my music: drum, bass, piano, guitar, trumpet, tenor sax, alto sax, soprano sax.

Styles: cool jazz, modal jazz, jazz-blues, dark jazz (now ogling to post-bop).

Jazz music taste is mainly from Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Bill Evans, Kenny Burrell, Michael Brecker, Stan Getz, Paul Desmond. Piano taste is mainly from Bill Evans, Horace Parlan, McCoy Tyner, Oscar Peterson, Sonny Clark, George Colligan, Chopin pieces. Guitar taste is mainly from Kenny Burrell, Jim Hall, Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Pat Metheny".

1. Alone is about the kind of feeling myself alone even if someone else is around. Melancholic and blue tune. The mute trupet brings up a bluesy theme, which goes forward into a slow, but very tense chord progression that releases only for a few notes in the melody before turning back to the deep mood. Exactly how one cannot come up easily from this „alone” state.
Instruments: d, b, p, tr.

2. Take Your Time. I wanted to bring a noir-like mood, but in a medium tempo that gives an extra highlight to the theme. It represent my inner warning signal to myself, not to overcome something important in the rushy multitasking world (what I do a lot).
Instruments: d, b, p, tr., a.sax

3. Blue Waltz. I composed the theme as a blues chanson-like jazz progression that is a perfect base for the catchy jazz melody by lead guitar supported by the tenor and soprano saxophones. The rythm of the melody gives a modern hit to the waltz beat. The guitar and piano solo sections alternate each other, taking a ’blue waltz’ with each other.
Instruments: d, b, p, g, s.sax, t.sax

4. Morning Whistle. I usually can come out from any blue mood only in the other’s day morning. This theme is one I whistled one of those mornings, so I want to help others to start the day with whistle and smile.
Instruments: d, b, p, g, tr., s.sax, a.sax

5. Think Again. During the compositions and the recordings of the tracks I was really glad about how well it went so far, so I wanted this feeling as part of the album.
Instruments: d, b, p, g, s.sax, t.sax, a.sax, tambourine, conga, bongo, shaker

6. Peace Within is a very calming theme that represents my inner peace. It is something we seek, but very rarely (or never) find. When I felt that I found, I composed this theme and it helps me to get back to that calming feeling, and I hope it will help others as well.
Instruments: d, b, p, t.sax, tr., vibraphone

Gabriele Mastropasqua - Jazzed-Up! (September 2021 Dodicilune / Ird)
