Adam Shead Quintet - Full Cycle, Thread New. (February 18, 2022 Paradigm Records)

Full Cycle, Thread New. is a long form composition in three movements by Chicago multi-disciplinary artist Adam Shead. The piece focuses heavily on concepts of reformation, regeneration, non-linear time dynamics, and cyclical history. Throughout the three movements (which features Shead alongside acclaimed Chicago improvised music stalwarts Jeff Kimmel, clarinets; Ishmael Ali, cello/electronics; Matt Piet, piano; and Andrew Scott Young, double bass.) the quintet effortlessly intertwines a diverse spectrum of aesthetic parameters while maintaining the music’s forward momentum.

Full Cycle, Thread New. was recorded live in March of 2021 at the eminent home for the most open of minds and ears: Constellation Chicago. Various influences abound throughout the concert length recording, in oblique and mysterious ways. One may hear faint traces of other composers (John Lewis; Instant Composers Pool; Roscoe Mitchell; La Monte Young; Pauline Oliveros; Thelonious Monk) in this music, or they may not. They may hear these familiar sounds rub up against each other in passing like a sideswipe on the freeway, or in seemingly concurrent waves like a detuned radio, or they may not hear them at all. Throughout the composition Adam Shead’s quintet threads the needle between the past and the present thanks to his honed and studied compositional approach. In this recording, genres assert themselves as much as they defy easy categorization. The listener is confronted with sound elements reminiscent of various idiomatic and non-idiomatic approaches which together form one overarching narrative, ultimately generated by and belonging to Shead himself.

The music utilizes the strengths of all five members to conjure out of seemingly everywhere and nowhere a sound that is genuinely swinging, often awhirl with surprise and subversion, but above all stated with confidence and intent. The aptitude with which Shead’s compatriots assert their own self-will with deference to his approach to organized sound(s) results in a curiously novel group-sound that is as exciting as it is baffling. The listener may feel like they have gotten off a roller coaster by the end of the recording, only to find themselves drawn back to the music as though in a trance: for clarification, for elation, for the plain fun of it. Piet, Young, and Shead, are a dynamic rhythm section, able to cultivate a visceral rhythmic interplay while displaying an acute awareness of the traditions of their respective instruments. Kimmel and Ali are thoughtful, fluid players who steer the music left of center toward parts unknown, and the listener is all the better for it.

2. Mvt. II
3. Mvt. III

Ishmael Ali - cello, electronics
Matt Piet - piano

Adam Meckler Orchestra - Music for the Water Walkway (August 13, 2021 Shifting Paradigm Records)

Music for the Water Walkway is a new three-song EP by the Adam Meckler Orchestra. Commissioned by the Rozsa Center for Performing Arts, the music was composed to accompany a geo-tagging app called “Listen,” in which the music is tagged to specific points on the canal path in Houghton, Michigan. As you walk the path using the Listen app, the music unfolds around you. The canal path features the stunning beauty of the Upper Peninsula, which served as the primary inspiration behind the compositions. Originally commissioned by Austin High School in MN, “Inspiration” features winding dueling solos between Meckler on flugelhorn, and long-time collaborator saxophonist Nelson Devereaux. The title track of the album is a 2-minute loop written for the Listen app that features guest soloists Lucia Sarmiento on Alto Saxophone, and Omar Abdulkarim on Trumpet.

Dean Granros / Zacc Harris / Chris Bates / Jay Epstein - Taller Tales (July 2021 Shifting Paradigm Records)

After what was supposed to be a one off gig in 2014, with long time trio of Dean Granros, Chris Bates Jay Epstein being joined by a second guitarist, Zacc Harris, an audience member offered to pay for that lineup to record in the studio. In early 2015, the band did just that, spending two days at the Terrarium in Minneapolis, tracking around 15 tunes. Seven of those resulted in the 2015 release TALL TALES. During the months of isolation from the pandemic, Harris tracked down the unreleased takes and mixed and mastered them, resulting in this new release, TALLER TALES. Thanks to Jason Orris of the Terrarium for taking the time to find these tracks in their archives, and to Dylan Nau of Rocket Snake Records for his incredible guidance during the mixing process.

Daniel Thatcher - Waterwheel (April 30, 2021 Shifting Paradigm Records)

With his debut recording as a bandleader, Daniel Thatcher not only assembles an ensemble brimming with exceptional musicianship, but also puts forth his distinct voice as a fresh and thoughtful composer. This release, due out on Shifting Paradigm Records in April 2021, features Daniel’s band Waterwheel, a quartet consisting of guitarists John Kregor and Matt Gold, and drummer Devin Drobka. Together they weave a musical tapestry which exemplifies qualities that define Daniel and his bandmates both musically and personally: supportive, creative, selfless, and open.

The band derives its name from a reference to the Microcosmic Orbit, a pair of meridians or energy lines that store Qi, relevant to Tai Chi and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Qi is considered vital energy, an invisible force which animates, brings into balance, and heals.

Everything in the world is made up of it and it is within every one of us. Daniel’s music is inspired by and reflects this life-affirming force.
