Albert Cirera & Kamarilla - Aquella Cosa (March 2022 UnderPool)

Albert Cirera is one of the most prominent saxophonists of his generation; essential for understanding the current jazz scene and one of the greatest exponents of improvisation in the last decade in Catalonia.

He has managed to develop a solid trajectory both at home and abroad which has enabled him to perform in different international scenes.

On Aquella Cosa, Cirera puts together a collection of his originals and gives them new life with this septet. The complicity they share enables them to construct a language comprising melodies, grooves, and improvisation, along with experimentation with sound, texture and form.

Albert Cirera is a mature musician; capable of expressing himself comfortably in any of the musical registers he has tackled; demonstrating that music is not so much a question of style as it is of experience.

Albert Cirera and Kamarilla make music in its purest form. Aquella Cosa will make you laugh, dance ,breathe, and live!

Clara Lai - Creciente (January 2022 UnderPool)

This work on the compositional process informs the creator's musical universe. Over the years she has worked continuously to consolidate her own uninhibited voice, which in turn has considerably enriched the current musical panorama.

The album strikes a balance between improvisation and composition; featuring the musical voices of Albert Cirera, Iván Gonzalez, and Joan Moll who contribute their own personal traits to the whole; resulting in a unified abstract vision that is captivating for the listener.

Clara Lai's music becomes a mirror in which one recognizes one's own emotions, and where contemporary forms reveal new unsuspected horizons..

////

"Another ingenious saxophone-drums duo pf Albert Cirera, very different from Duot, yet equally creative and innovative. During his visi to Argentina in 2019, Albert encounters here a phenomenal Argentinian drummer Alexis Perepelycia.

They play three tracks, all very abstract and very expressive,d to compare to anything I know. Maybe some recordings of Evan Parker have similar spirit -- listen to the opening "Surubí frito". "Litoral" is on the lyrical free improvisation side. More quiet an dpeaceful, contains nevertheless incredible emotional load.

The best, however, is the closing, the most "traditional free jazz" track, "Espinas". The album deserves ***, the only drawback is the total length of it: only 25 minutes." (Maciej Lewenstein)

João Hasselberg & Pedro Branco - From Order to Chaos (CLEAN FEED RECORDS 2017)

Only a few months after the debuting success of the album “Dancing Our Way to Death”, the partnership of the Portuguese, but living in Copenhagen, double bassist João Hasselberg and the also Portuguese, but established in Amsterdam, guitarist Pedro Branco is back with “From Order to Chaos”.

The arguments presented make us expect other grand results, maybe even stronger, such is the programmatic range of the concept announced by the title “From Order to Chaos”. It’s not difficult to understand why: together and each one by his side, with their own individual projects and through collaborations with others, Hasselberg and Branco are renewing the jazz tradition with the internalization of aspects coming from both popular music (folk, pop, rock) and art music (contemporary classical, experimental, free improvised), taking down the barriers still dividing “high culture” and “low culture”.

Some of the participants are the same of the previous record (such is the case of the virtuoso guitar player Afonso Pais), establishing a sense of continuity, but others are added, like the Catalan Albert Cirera, a saxophonist at ease in both mainstream and avant-garde situations. The music is so familiarly strange, so bizarrely accessible, that you soon become addicted.

Albert Cirera & Tres Tambors - Suite Salada (UNDERPOOL 2017)

After the first album "Els Encants" (FSNT, 2012) Albert Cirera & Tres Tambors presents his second album, "Suite Salada" (UnderPool, 2017). A work that expands a little more the frontiers of this group towards freer and deeper ways, but still being the most lyrical project of Cirera. A work that shows, once again, the connection between these four musicians, linking in 50 minutes of music, soundscapes, melodies, interludes and improvisations, full of energy, character and surprise.

Always with the infinite nuances of the word beauty, and the collective journey as a point of reference, these four musicians play with music proposed by Cirera as four children having fun on some beach in Menorca, an island that inspires Cirera to give light to this idea For years I was after.
