In the short history of jazz there's only been a small handful of truly creative, inventive improvisers. Lee Konitz stands out as one of the most beautiful poets in this expansive music.

His playing and concepts have been a big part of my development. He's been an inspired improviser all his life and it comes through his horn in every breath!!

I've seen Jeanfrançois Prins develop so fast in the last few years (I'm really proud of him).

He's becoming a real voice on the guitar with a warmth that's all his own. His trio with Bruno Castellucci and Sal La Rocca is a perfect match with Lee. They ask the musical question "Is Now The Time?" Now Is The Time everytime when all when all the elements fall in place, as they do here.

Great tunes, with sensitive, creative improvisers that play with a deep sense of history and swing as they explore new places within the music. Joe Lovano

The Jon De Lucia Octet Releases Live at The Drawing Room with Ted Brown in Summer 2018

The Octet was scheduled to play at Sir D's Lounge today but it was sadly cancelled due to emergency renovations at the club. We will perform again soon and have a ton of new music to present so stay tuned. 

In other Octet news, the tracks are mixed and mastered for the Live at the Drawing Room recording that we did with the great Ted Brown back in the fall of 2016. This was an amazing experience as we were able to play and record many of the arrangements from the original Lee Konitz meets Jimmy Giuffre album with Ted, who recorded them in 1959. We were even able to put together a reading session with Lee himself. These, along with some of my arrangements of Ted's great tunes and others make up the body of the recording. 

Right now the record is scheduled to be released on Gut String Records and I am raising funds to print CDs and design the package etc. If you feel that you would like to contribute, any donation of $20 and up will get you a copy of the CD when it is released. Lee Konitz - Frescalalto (IMPULSE! 2017)

At 89, Lee Konitz has nothing left to prove, but the legendary saxophonist, who began his long recording career on Miles Davis’ Birth of the Cool back in 1949, proves here nonetheless that he remains one of the most original and truly improvisatory talents in jazz.

Konitz has always sounded like a man searching for the least obvious path through a standard, and here – with long-standing associates pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington – on a set of hoary old chestnuts including Stella by Starlight, Darn that Dream and Out of Nowhere, he steadfastly avoids cliché once more.

Lee Konitz & Kenny Wheeler Quartet - Olden Times: Live At Birdland Neuburg 1999 (2016)

This re-release of the 1999 recording Live At Birdland has been remastered for optimal sound quality and includes a bonus track not previously included on the album. Lee Konitz was born in 1927 in Chicago. When he was 11 years old, he received his first instrument, a clarinet, but later dropped the instrument in favor of the tenor saxophone. He eventually moved from tenor to alto. His greatest influences at the time were the Swing big bands he and his brother listened to on the radio, in particular Benny Goodman. He started his professional career in 1945, and played with all the greats, from Miles Davis to Joe Henderson. Kenny Wheeler was born in 1930 in St. Catharines, Ontario. He studied trumpet in Toronto and moved to London in 1952. Versatile artist as he was, he played free improv in the Globe Unity Orchestra of Alexander von Schlippenbach as well as jazz-rock in the United Jazz & Rock Ensemble.

He passed away on September 18, 2014. Light shines on this rerelease, on the glistening vibrato of the alto saxophone, the lyrical melancholy of the flugelhorn, the spinning web-like weaving of the piano as well as the clever architecture of the bass. Everything joins into a shimmer mesh of interaction and strategy of technical brilliance and solo sophistication.
