Fredrik Lundin - 5 Go Adventuring Again (CHALLENGE RECORDS February 09, 2018)

With the quintet FIVE GO ADVENURING AGAIN, Lundin has created a “small” band with a very large and richly faceted sound. The five unique musicians take advantage of the orchestra’s sound possibilities, and in the compositions, provide ample space to utilize their improvisa- tional potential. The explosive music is tempered by the Polish trumpeter Tomasz Dabrowski, two Swedes: Petter Hängsel on trombone/synthezeizer and Joel Illerhag on the bazantar (a homemade double bass with resonance strings), and two Danes: Anders Provis on acoustic and electric drums, and the Maestro himself on various saxophones.

Very Well Vol. 1 is the first release in a series from Jesper Løvdal, exploring the quartet format.

Very Well Vol. 1 brings together the best from two worlds and is a unique meeting of bass player Palle Danielsson (S) and drummer Bob Gullotti (US). The release sets new standards for the meeting between American jazz and the Scandinavian folk inspired music and melodic improvisation.

Saxophone player Jesper Løvdal and pianist Mathias Landæus have composed the music exept the beautiful and rarely recorded tune, I Get Along Without You Very Well, best known from the 1954 Chet Baker recording. Compositions and improvisations are woven together to a whole where borders are dissolved and the moorings that holds the art, is caped. The open sky awaits the listener on Very Well Vol. 1 whose titles all circles around the subject freedom.

Palle Danielsson is the personification of Scandinavian jazz and has created a personal bass sound that has been the basis of a number of world-known bands, amongst them the Keith Jarret European Quartet. Since the beginning of his career in the 1960s he has played with among others Bill Evans and Elvin Jones, and has been a unifying musical force in Scandinavia.

Bob Gullotti have through 40 years in the band The Fringe together with George Garzone and John Lockwood, cultivated a group sound, energy and philosophy that is one of the most admired on the scene today. He is a highly respected professor at Berklee College of Music, where he continues the proud drum tradition founded by his own teacher, Alan Dawson.

Mathias Landæus og Jesper Løvdal met each other 20 years ago in New York and this CD is the first documentation of their music together. The expression is extremely varied and present in the moment. Playing for the ensemble is first priority and there is no holding back. This is 100 percent honest music.

Being Playing is a musical landscape that organically unfolds as a meditative story. The form is abstract and closer to the way of a modern classical composer than of straight ahead jazz.

This recording is a personal milestone for each of the musicians and opens up a new musical chapter in their musical odyssey.

The musicians come from different musical backgrounds, but do nevertheless have a clear mutual idea of how music has it’s own strong inner life, without the appearance of the musicians ego.

Mark Dresser is a legend in American improvised music and groundbreaking on the double bass, which he has given an entirely new voice. After many years of living in New York playing with Anthony Braxton, Tim Berne, Ray Andersson and John Zorn, he is now a professor at San Diego University where he met Butch Lacy 35 years ago.

Butch played at the time with Sarah Vaughan’s trio but shortly after he moved to Denmark where he has been living since. He has transformed the Danish jazz environment in many ways with his playing, as well as his charismatic teaching at conservatories all over the country. Butch Lacy has composed for both symphony orchestra and big band, and his Very Big Band. A combination of both was an important musical experiment in Denmark.

Jesper Løvdal is too young to have been taught by Butch Lacy in Copenhagen, but he was highly fascinated by his spiritual playing from a young age and has been playing duo with him for 10 years. When Mark Dresser, Butch Lacy and Jesper Løvdal met for a concert in Copenhagen where magic occurred from the first sound, it was a necessity to go into the studio and bring the young drummer that originally brought Butch and Jesper together, Kresten Osgood. Osgood has his roots in jazz but plays with an universal artistic expression which lives very much in the present moment, and melts together with the rest of the band.
