It's evident in in the neatness of each arrangement, the meticulous if sometimes understated playing, and the rigid emphasis on collectivity. Little is left to chance but there are surprises, not least the manner in which some of the tunes by band members hit the improvisatory ground running and in the respect accorded to the traditions of ballad playing, especially in the way Van Gelder and Govin tackle Era Só Começo Nosso Fim, by the Brazilian bassist and composer Iuri Popoff.
