Phillip Johnston & the Coolerators - Diggin' Bones (October 26, 2018)

Diggin’ Bones  Down Under:
NY Jazz Composer & Saxophonist Phillip Johnston (Microscopic Septet) Joins Forces in Australia with
Bassist Lloyd Swanton (The Necks), Organist Alister Spence & Drummer Nic Cecire to
Coolerate a New Sound & Release an Animated Album

When composer / saxophonist / bandleader Phillip Johnston, leader of New York’s legendary jazz ensemble The Microscopic Septet, moved from the Big Apple to Sydney, he assembled several of Australia’s best musicians – Alister Spence, Lloyd Swanton, Nic Cecire – and began brewing a distinctive and lively Australian ensemble. The Sydney-based Phillip Johnston & the Cooleratorsnow releases its first album, Diggin’ Bones, whose unique sound combines funky organ combo jazz with modernist jazz composition, including a touch of klezmer. Produced by The Necks’ Lloyd Swanton and featuring some of Australia’s finest jazz/multi-genre improvisers, Diggin’ Bones shows a new side of Johnston’s music.

The Coolerators brings together two of Australia’s most internationally acclaimed touring musicians, Alister Spence (Alister Spence Trio, Clarion Fracture Zone, AAO) and Lloyd Swanton (The Necks, the catholics) with one of Sydney’s most in-demand rhythm section players, Nic Cecire. The music covers a range of styles but avant organ jazz is at the centre of it.

Johnston has led Phillip Johnston & the Cooleratorssince 2005, alongside several other live performance and recording projects, including Sydney’s Greasy Chicken Orchestraand New York’s Microscopic Septet, and while extensively touring with Wordless!, his multi-media theatrical collaboration with illustrator Art Spiegelman and the band The Silent Six.  But beginning in 2018, while still involved in those other projects, Johnston began focussing on the Coolerators as his main vehicle for live performance.

Diggin’ Bones adds a new chapter to Johnston’s extensive discography, which began in 1983 with The Micros’ Take The Z Train. His most recent previous releases include numerous CDs on Cuneiform Recordsby The Microscopic Septet(with co-composer Joel Forrester) and Fast ‘N’ Bulbous (a Captain Beefheart tribute band that he co-leads with Gary Lucas). All of these releases have been widely and exceptionally reviewed (all receiving 4 stars in Downbeat) and received many Best of the Year critical listings.

Many of Johnston’s releases feature exemplary art work by notable illustrators, including Art Spiegelman and Barry Blitt, among others, and Diggin’ Bones is no exception, featuring art and cover design by Keith LoBue. Both groovy and cerebral, the Coolerators play animated and funky dance music for a cartoon universe.

The label Asynchronous is releasing Phillip Johnston and the Coolerators’ Diggin’ Bones simultaneously with another Phillip Johnston album, The Adventures of Prince Achmed, a soundtrack that Johnston composed for the world’s first feature-length animated film, a 1926 silhouette animation by female film pioneer Lotte Reiniger. In addition to Johnston, two of the five musicians on the Prince Achmed soundtrack album are members of The Coolerators: Nic Cecire and Alister Spence. Johnston has composed, recorded, and performed live numerous soundtracks for silent film. He has also published writings and presented conference papers on the subject. In addition, Johnstonis author of ‘Jazzin’ The Silents: Jazz and Improvised Music in Contemporary Scores for Silent Film’ for the upcoming/2019 book, When Jazz meets Cinema, edited by Emilio Audissino and Emile Wennekes (Brepols: Turnhout, Belgium).

Phillip Johnston - The Adventures of Prince Achmed (October 26, 2018)

“Johnston’s soundtrack adds an extra dimension to the 2D-nature of the animation, with energetic jazz layered over the pre-recorded percussion track that builds up and flows through the film. While Johnston and Reineger’s compositions are each complex in their own ways, they come together simply and beautifully, stripping animation back to its abstract qualities of light, shadow, image and sound.”
– Anna Madeleine, The Guardian, 2015 (MONA FOMA)

Composer, Saxophonist, Bandleader, and Film Music Scholar
Conjures a Magical Soundtrack for
THE WORLD’S FIRST FEATURE-LENGTH ANIMATED FILM
– THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED –
to Bring to Life the Silhouette Animation by Groundbreaking Female Filmmaker
LOTTE REINIGER
Awakening the Wonders of One Thousand and One Nights

This enchanting album contains the music that Phillip Johnston composed as a soundtrack for The Adventures of Prince Achmed, a 1926 silent silhouette animation that is a landmark in cinema history – the world’s first feature-length animated film.  Created by female film pioneer Charlotte “Lotte” Reiniger, the animated film is based upon One Thousand and One Nights, a collection of Middle Eastern folk tales often referred to as The Arabian Nights. To breathe Reiniger’s silhouettes to life, Johnston composed a continuous score of 65 minutes of music to be performed live with the film by a quartet of soprano sax, trombone, and two keyboards, against a pre-recorded track of samples, loops and live drums. For this recording of The Adventures of Prince Achmed, the music is performed by Johnston (soprano saxophone) with Australian musicians James Greening (trombone), Alister Spence (organ, keyboards), Casey Golden (organ, keyboards), and Nic Cecire (drums), and broken by the composer into twelve individual tracks.

Phillip Johnston has been composing and performing original scores for silent films for 25 years in both his native USA and current home in Australia. His previous silent film scores include The Unknown (Browning, 1927), The Merry Frolics of Méliès (Méliès, 1902-1909), Page of Madness (Kinugasa, 1926), Faust (Murnau, 1926), the first three of which were released on CD by Avant, Koch Jazz and Asynchronous, respectively. Johnston’s interest in silent film projects includes Wordless!, his multi-media collaboration with Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic artist Art Spiegelman, which features silent films and animation, spoken word/ Spiegelman’s historical essays, and live music by Johnston and his ensemble The Silent Six. Wordless! debuted at the Sydney Opera House on October 5, 2013 and has since been touring worldwide, including a nine-date tour of the USA and performances at the 2016 London Jazz Festival, Buenos Aires’ Comicópolis, and the Philharmonie de Paris. The film and music The Adventures of Prince Achmed have been performed across Australia, including the Sydney VIVID Festival, MONA FOMA and the Woodford Folk Festival, and Johnston is looking forward to touring the project overseas.

In addition to writing music for silent films and animation, Johnston has written articles on silent films for books and scholarly journals, in addition to presenting numerous conference papers.  He is author of the chapter “Jazzin’ The Silents: Jazz and Improvised Music in Contemporary Scores for Silent Film” for the upcoming book, When Jazz meets Cinema, edited by Emilio Audissino and Emile Wennekes (Turnhout, Belgium: Brepols, 2019).

The label Asynchronous is releasing Johnston’s The Adventures of Prince Achmed simultaneously with another Johnston project: Diggin’ Bones, a jazz album by Phillip Johnston & The Coolerators. The Coolerators are Johnston’s main Australia-based live band, and include  Johnston (soprano/alto saxophone), Nick Cecire (drums), Alister Spence (organ) – all three of whom perform on The Adventures of Prince Achmed – in addition to Lloyd Swanton (bass), also of The Necks.

Soul/Jazz Diva ALISON CROCKETT Celebrates Her Love of Brazil with Brand New Music :: EP Release of "OBRIGADA" at Iconic *BLUES ALLEY* in DC :: Monday, November 5 @ 8pm

"Alison Crockett's smoldering earthy and soul-drenched vocals have a way of unleashing deep emotion. A song in her hands is capable of reaching new dimensions as she seamlessly peels back layers of meaning though her intuitive and honest artistry..."
MONIFA BROWN, WBGO Jazz 88.3

" O Cantador...is an evocative, yet transparent piece that details her honest and original approach to modern expression and interpretation. Her music elicits a humanistic quality and innocence, full of emotional expression and spirit. Alison Truly owns a heightened sense of musicality that is impossible not to be affected by."
GREG OSBY, Jazz Saxophonist

“Alison Crockett is a vocalist I’ve known for many years, always admiring her musicianship, wisdom, and deep connection to story. Her version of “O Cantador” is raw, contemplative, and intensely sincere, bringing a real sense of truth to the Bergman’s English lyric. Haunting and beautiful.”
JANE MONHEIT

EARLESS MUSICAL TRAVELLER, SOUL/JAZZ VOCALIST AND DJ’S FAVORITE DARING DIVA, ALISON CROCKETT RELEASES “OBRIGADA”

RECORDED IN SAO PAULO, BRAZIL WITH FELIPE SILVIERA, THIAGO ALVES AND PAULINHO VICENTE

EP RELEASE CELEBRATIONS AT D.C.’s BLUES ALLEY ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2018 AT 8PM

FEATURING THE BRAZILIAN/DC LEGENDARY LUCINI BROTHERS, ALEJANDRO & LEONARDO ON DRUMS AND BASS PLUS VINCE EVANS ON PIANO

ALISON CROCKETT CD RELEASE CELEBRATION FOR “OBRIGADA”

1073 Wisconsin Ave. NW
Washington, DC 20007

Soul and Jazz vocalist, known as a “fearless” musical traveler, Alison Crockett, once a progressive nu-jazz singer (formerly of Sylk 130 & Us3) and darling to DJs worldwide, has morphed into another direction with her signature full force giving us her latest offering, OBRIGADA, celebrating her love of the Bossa Nova brilliance of Brazil. Celebrating the EP’s release at Washington, DC’s Blues Alley, 1073 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20007, on Monday, November 5 at 8pm, Alison will be joined by the legendary Brazilian/DC Lucini Brothers, Alejandro and Leonardo on drums and bass alongside pianist Vince Evans.

Crockett’s smoldering, earthy and classic soul-drenched vocals unleash deep emotion into this beautiful album. Hailed by Soultracks as “a talented singer, she was perhaps most notable as an artist who didn’t record just to record. She always seemed to record when it was time for her to say something.” The time for her next statement is now.

“When I got divorced, I went on a journey of self-exploration,” tells Crockett. Working with the artist Beth Amin, Crockett visited Sao Paulo, Brazil and performed at the famed, JazzB club.

“I started listening and learning Brazilian music and formed a bond immediately with Felipe Silveria, Paulinho Vicente and Thiago Alves. She returned home but couldn’t get the music out of her head. “I came back to Brazil again, this time to record and tour. As we rehearsed, we created a musical bond that lasted for 3 years.” Falling in love with Brazil culture and Sao Paulo especially, the people, the art and the food. “The people were so warm and giving. As a former Brooklynite, I found a kindred city that reminded me of NYC, but with tropical plants and beautiful and energetic graffiti art everywhere around the city.  The food was reminiscent of Black American food that I grew up with: beans and greens!”

The music on this EP reflects her new found love and her signature musical tastes steeped in Jazz and Soul music. These influences are heard most especially in the compositions, “Every Song” and the Chick Corea classic, “You’re Everything.” The first single Crockett released, “O Cantador” reflects what she prides herself in calling her “complete enveloping into the Brazilian Bossa Nova culture as the musicians taught me.”

Alison Crockett began playing the piano at 5 years old. Piano was her first love. “It just called to me. I still feel like a pianist who sings.” In high school, she won numerous talent competitions and it became apparent that her voice -- velvety, sensual, and dripping soul, jazz, gospel, and the blues -- was a rare gift. Honing her vocal skills at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA and then a master’s degree at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music in New York City. As she says, “I set out to be a craftsman; someone who could mold and shape music like sculpture.”

Taking the baton from divas of the present and past such as Rachelle Farrelle, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Donna Summer and Sarah Vaughn, she has created a distinctively personal and singular musical vision of her own, appearing on many seminal recordings including King Britt, Blue Six, Us3, among others.  After college, Alison settled in Philadelphia where she met Digable Planet’s DJ King Britt, who gave her nickname "Diva Blue”. Together they recorded the classic, "Season's Change" for the groundbreaking Sylk 130 album, "When the Funk Hits the Fan”. Following a successful world tour, Alison was approached by Geoff Wilkenson, founder of pioneering UK based acid-jazz group Us3, who called her “a young Shirley Bassey” and made Alison Us3's first lead singer.  Moving to London to write and sing on their album, "An Ordinary Day in an Unusual Place,” their first single, "Get Out", instantly shot to the top 10 on the charts within weeks of its Japanese release in 2001.

Alison then began working on her debut solo album, "On Becoming A Woman", which was released to wide acclaim in Japan in June 2003 and in the US and Europe in April 2004. Her ballad "Like Rain" climbed to number 3 on Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Winner's 2003 chart on his legendary BBC Radio 1 program. In 2006, Alison released a collection of remixes based on tracks from “On Becoming A Woman” entitled "The Return Of Diva Blue: On Becoming A Woman Redux". The collection featured mixes by a who’s who of top flight DJ producers: DJ Spinna, Yam Who, Phil Asher, Mark De Clive-Lowe and more, the album became a goldmine for lovers of deep house music, with Spinna’s take on the song “Crossroads” becoming a signature classic for Alison.

In the spring of 2007, Alison released her “love letter to my fans,” a stripped down, acoustic based “Bare”. Much of the album consisted of Alison at the piano, singing songs from a backlog of her compositions from a particularly prolific period of writing. After taking an extended break from her career to focus on motherhood, in 2012 Alison returned to the recording studio to work on her third solo album, “Mommy, What’s A Depression?” A mixture of jazz, soul and electronica, the album seeks to capture the weight of tumultuous times.

Alison’s latest project focuses on her new found love of Brazilian music. After exploring the country, she decided to mix her musical loves to create the project, “Obrigada”, which was recorded in the city of Sao Paulo with Brazilian jazz musicians Felipe Silviera, Thiago Alves and Palinho Vicente. Alison has created a beautiful sound and continues to highlight her fearlessness as a musical traveler, boldly projecting her exceptional voice into the sonic future.

Vitor Pereira Quintet - Somewhere in the Middle (December 5, 2018) + UK Autumn Tour

Vitor Pereira Quintet
“Somewhere in the Middle” album release
and UK tour

“Somewhere in the middle” is the title of the third album of original music by this London based contemporary jazz band.

It embodies an idea which naturally spilt from this music where the audience meet the musicians in a symbiotic middle plane of mutual stimulation.

With a variety of influences from “Vijay Iyer” to “Queens of the stone age”, this compositions are carefully thought to fulfil a mixed bag of particular tastes of a refined but diverse audience whilst at the same time they offer excellent platforms for the musicians to shape and bend the music as they please and feel on the moment.

Being it a thrill for head-banging guitar riffs or the complexity of contrapuntal interweaving melodic lines, this music will induce a comprehensive and contrasting journey.

We live in a polarised world today, both musically and socially and although the fringes can be very trending, this album tends to sit on the idea that there’s plenty of space to be innovative and unique when you navigate in the middle.

The choice of musicians was equally important. All of them are extremely open and versatile musicians which understand the music very well and naturally take a lot of liberties both on the written and improvised material.

This is essential for the music to have the elastic and organic sound it has as well as to produce the cohesive nature of this album’s idea.

Vitor Pereira

Vitor Pereira was born in Porto/Portugal where he studied mainly classical music and classical guitar.
His interest in Jazz took him to participate in seminars and private lessons with the likes of Pat Metheny, Jonathan Kreisberg, Gilad Hekselman or Aaron Goldberg to name a few and ultimately led him to London in 2004 to study at the “Middlesex University”.

Living in London since then he is an active name in the UK and Europe playing with names like: James Allsopp, Asaf Sirkis, Josh Arcoleo, Binker Goldings, Marc Demuth, etc…

Leading his quintet, Vitor has published two albums and had several radio plays, interviews and numerous performances across Europe like the “Portajazz festival” in Porto.

BRUUT! - V (DOX RECORDS November 30, 2018)

To the surrealism of Quentin Tarantino films, second-hand records and old Westerns… To the vibe of lava lamps and Photoshopped boogaloo… To a 1960s that is as unfocused as the 1960s you see on YouTube…Bruut! swings hard. Bruut! balances the colourful with the unpolished, and the danceable with the listenable. In short: Bruut! is all about super jazz.

Jacob Duncan Quintet (feat. JD Allen) - It's Alright To Dream (2018)

Jacob Duncan's It's Alright To Dream is a tour de force, a moment of pure earthy connection. Duncan has created an environment that celebrates some of his personal heroes, as well as the complexity of individualism and place. Duncan and his musical companions put it all on the table, moving through the celebrations with humor, intensity, swinging authenticity, and unencumbered soul.

There are no shortages of risk and conversation in this collection of compositions and improvisations based squarely in the tradition and spirit of jazz, blues, and storytelling. The individualism on display is memorable, abstract, and organic.

Introducing Collective Order, Volume Three (November 23, 2018)

Volume Three marks another important step in the
evolution of Toronto’s Collective Order. Having
released two volumes of music, they have solidified
a vision for the future of the project: “Looking
ahead, Collective Order plans to continue to become
more inclusive and to better reflect the musical and
cultural diversity of Toronto.”

With Volume Three, the band has created a
collection of compositions inspired by individual
band members’ cultural backgrounds and personal
experiences. Toronto is a collection of incredibly
diverse and culturally rich communities, and in this
collaborative project, the band aims to eliminate
imaginary boundaries and establish new musical
traditions.

In keeping with the collaborative nature of
Collective Order, the opening title is a composition
written to accompany a traditional land
acknowledgement by Indigenous artist Melanie
Montour.
