This is the fourth album of original music from The Richard Shulman Group and I’m honored to be working with such skilled and intuitive musicians. Turned into Lemonade is melodic, harmonically inventive jazz influenced by Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Keith Jarrett, Jan Garbarek, John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Paul Winter, Oregon, Bill Evans, and Jay Beckenstein.

This collection of compositions/performances is a blend of melody, fire, water, groove, mutual exploration and beauty which I hope will uplift you the listener as much as creating it has uplifted me.” — Richard Shulman

“Richard Shulman is a gifted pianist/composer with a distinctive goal: creating music that’s joyful to the ear and uplifting to the spirit. Bothsophisticated and accessible, his work has the harmonic sense of Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans and is designed to inspire and soothe, even when it swings.” — All Music Guide Biography by Dr. Judith Schlesinger.

Hugh Wyatt of the New York Daily News calls Shulman “most enticing.. a new find... in the Keith Jarrett tradition who cleverly and interestingly weaves a number of different cultures into his music.”

“The playing throughout is consistently superb. The music is worth repeated listening and offers different dividends each time. Richard Shulman is a major composer and performer who deserves and will attain wider recognition.” — Frank Salamone, in reviewing Shulman’s recording “A Simple Gift.”

Makaya McCraven - Universal Beings (INTERNATIONAL ANTHEM RECORDING October 26, 2018)

Paris-born, New England-raised, long-time Chicago-residing Makaya McCraven has been at the forefront of genre-redefining movements in jazz since 2015, when he introduced the world to his unique brand of ‘organic beat music’ on the breakout album In The Moment. Culled, cut, post-produced & re-composed by Makaya using recordings of free improvisation he collected over dozens of live sessions in Chicago, through incubation & experimentation In The Moment established a procedural blueprint that he has since been sharpening & developing.

Honing this process on narrower sets of source material, Makaya followed up In The Moment with 2 mixtape releases – 2017’s Highly Rare, a lo-fi free-jazz-meets-hip-hop suite he made from a live 4-track recording, and June 2018’s Where We Come From (CHICAGOxLONDON Mixtape), which he produced using live recordings from London jazz hub Total Refreshment Centre (captured at a showcase called CHICAGOxLONDON).

Now, after 4+ years of refining his approach, Makaya McCraven puts forth an ambitious new work – Universal Beings – a culmination of concepts conceived by In The Moment, and his most elegant & articulated work yet.

Spurred by a desire to connect with old friends & new collaborators in places where similar spirits & diasporic jazz innovations are thriving, Makaya worked with International Anthem across late 2017 & early 2018 to setup intimate live sessions in New York & Chicago, and pop-up “studio” sessions in London & Los Angeles. Though the contexts and logistics were D.I.Y. (as they almost always are with IARC), the friends & friends-of-friends that Makaya was able to enlist are top tier players across the board. Some might call them super groups of “new” jazz musicians from their respective cities, with Makaya as a common denominator. But more importantly, collectively they make an inspiring display of the organic global inter-connectedness of the Black American music tradition in 2018.

Physically spanning national & international borders to create an album that musically spans deep spiritual jazz meditations, pulsing post-bop grooves & straight-ahead boom-bap, Makaya McCraven defies the simplifications of revisionism & regionalism while celebrating the sounds, settings & stories that define the provenance of his work. Universal Beings projects an all-encompassing message of unity, peace & power by embracing transcendence in all its expressions.

StringShot (Roy Rogers / Badi Assad & Carlos Reyes) - Blues & Latin (2018)

Virtuosic Artists Collide in Elegant Conversation of Latin + Blues on StringShot

Trio’s debut album and U.S. tour set to capture the hearts of roots, rock, world, and jazz fans

There’s a bedrock of sound that unites the music of the Americas, despite the remarkable variety of musical expression on the surface. And then there’s the unique, near-magical energy that comes alive when devoted musicians let their skill and artistry converse.

StringShot, the new trio collaboration between legendary blues slide guitarist & producer Roy Rogers, Brazilian guitar virtuoso and songwriter Badi Assad, and South American stringed harp master and violinist Carlos Reyes, harnesses both, bringing blues and Latin music into close dialog while demonstrating how well friendship translates into flawless performances and songwriting. Their beautifully produced debut album, StringShot, leaves ample room for the musical kindred spirits to strut their stuff and move with effortless tenderness.

“I’m always trying to push the envelope, ” laughs Rogers. “It’s conducive to great music. The Latin and blues conversation has always appealed to me, and I love the rhythms and the challenge of a different genre. This is the first time I’ve gotten to explore it outside of a strictly blues context, and it’s been wonderful.”

“Though our styles are totally different, we use them as a way to communicate our hearts out,” explains Assad. “In the lyrics process, we could feel that we take in life in similar way, with day-by-day discoveries, with a lot of simplicity coming from the soul, and a love for music with a lot of freedom. Roy has a very big heart and he embraced me as a sister, with that same kind of care and support. You can hear it in the music, our very special friendship.”

American audiences will get to hear the collaboration live for the first time, as StringShot embarks on its debut tour on the West Coast this autumn.

Fay Claassen & WDR Big Band - Dutch Songbook (CHALLENGE RECORDS 2018)

"This album is a live recording of a very precious musical moment for me. What you hear is exactly as it happened at that special concert. Everything felt right, the great WDR Big Band conducted by Torsten Maass with its fantastic soloists, the gorgeous arrangements, the special guest soloists I could bring from the Netherlands: Peter Tiehuis, Cor Bakker and Theo de Jong, not to mention the enthusiastic audience of the club. A Dutch ‘Friendly Takeover’ in Cologne! "

In November 2015 Fay was asked by the management of the WDR Big Band to put together a programme with music from the Netherlands. Fay got carte blanche to choose all the music and have it arranged for her and the WDR Big Band. Although she had never sung in Dutch before, she loved the idea!

Fay was very happy that she could ask some of her favorite arrangers from the Netherlands, such as Rob Horsting, Ilja Reijngoud, Joan Reinders and Henk Meutgeert, to arrange the songs, but also Torsten Maass and legendary arranger Michael Abene made their fantastic contributions.

This project is recorded live at the ”Jazz-Schmiede“, Düsseldorf on November 28th 2015.
