Eyal Talmudi Quintet - Even If (2018)

One of Israel’s busiest reed players and band leaders in the world/jazz/indie scene, Eyal Talmudi has been touring with Balkan Beat Box, Kutiman Orchestra and Oy Division for the past decade and working with other projects including Malox and Time Groove. Influenced by music including folk, punk and jazz, Talmudi brings his creativity and groove to everything he plays.

The album recorded in one amazing and creative session at Kichastudios Israel by "MOMO" Uri Barak. Let the music take you to a trip between psychedelic and spiritual jazz to African groove.

The debut single from the Eyal Talmudi Quintet's debut album 'Even If' is an Afrobeat tune that is both influenced by and dedicated to Fela Kuti, not only one of the most dedicated fighters in the civil rights movement but also a musician who brought the Afrobeat genre to the forefront of world music. 'Fela on My Mind' was written by Eyal Talmudi and Sefi Zisling in the studio along with the rest of the band.

Peter Bruun's All Too Human - Vernacular Avant-garde (AYLER RECORDS March 10, 2018)

‘Less is more’ is a well-known saying. It’s an oxymoron because of its paradoxical nature. Paradoxes take us beyond ingrained patterns of perception, reasoning and action. That’s what is in the expression as coined by the old Greek.

This newly formed unit’s music is simple without being simple. It sounds vaguely familiar and strange at the same time. It resembles a lot known and nothing known. It has a fairy tale quality and as we know, in fairy tales lots of wondrous things can happen.

Drummer Peter Bruun from Copenhagen has been aware through his musical career of the creative potential and power lurking in paradoxical manoeuvres. In this new unit he has gathered three like-minded musical fellows under the 'All Too Human' flag.

Through the years he undertook a lot of terra incognita expeditions with pianist Simon Toldam, guitarist Marc Ducret and trumpeter Kasper Tranberg. It connected and connects them on deeper levels in their musical interaction.

Patrick Haesler - The Poetry in a Moment (2018)

This latest album of mine is a collection of works written and recorded over the course of 2017 and early 2018. It shows, quite prominently, my love for both jazz fusion and hip-hop, combining them in various ways to create what I consider to be a benchmark for myself going forward.

I would like to give a big thank you to my two guests on this album; my dear friends Sophia and Lily on vocals and flute respectively, both are talented musicians who I am grateful to have had lend their talents to this project. Without them, I would not have been able to realise the compositions of which they were a part. I would also like to thank a third friend, Kai Clark (@ayhdorkc on Instagram), for his beautiful album cover.

Excluding the contributions of my guests, everything you hear on the album was created solely by me; composition, production, all the parts, the works. I don't usually like to brag, but once in a while, it's earned. So much of what I have accomplished on this album wouldn't have been possible even 6 months ago. As much as it is a piece of artistic expression, this album is a testament to my growth as a musician, producer and composer. Here's to whatever comes next.

The Bamboos Unleash New Track 'Lit Up'

ANNOUNCE EIGHTH STUDIO ALBUM ‘NIGHT TIME PEOPLE’

COMING JUNE 8TH VIA PACIFIC THEATRE / BMG

“One mans vision of Soul music's evolving potential” ROLLING STONE

Melbourne nine-piece funk-soul powerhouse The Bamboos return with ‘Lit Up’, the new single taken from their forthcoming album ‘Night Time People’.

Having previously collaborated with the likes of Aloe Blacc and Alice Russell, their latest offering brings to mind the likes of Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones, combining the raw drive of their earliest LPs with their more recent subtly progressive experimentations in the studio. It’s a fresh approach that finds the band wholly reenergised.

‘Lit Up’ is built upon an insanely catchy piano riff and the best use of cowbell since ‘Honky Tonk Women’. In contrast to that, Bamboos vocalist Kylie Auldist sings of trying to hide away from her pain: “When the sun goes down, feel my heart fill up with regret” Accompanied by a stylish high contrast black and white video, the end result is a song with a unique balance of irresistible groove and raw emotion.

The Bamboos are one of the highest profile soul / funk acts in Australia, and have been recognised worldwide as masters of reinventing the genre with modern song writing within classic arrangements & production for over 15 years.

Millions of listeners globally are already familiar with the winning combination of The Bamboo’s guitarist / leader Lance Ferguson and Auldist, thanks to “This Girl” by Kung Vs. Cookin’ On 3 Burners. One of 2016’s biggest hits was a remix of a 2009 track co-written by Ferguson (including that infectious guitar riff) and went on to hit #2 in the UK, #1 in France and Germany, and made the top 30 in 35 countries. It's edging close to half a billion Spotify plays, 300 million Youtube hits, and is the 12th most Shazamed song of all time. All of which proved beyond a doubt that the world was craving pop music with genuine soul.

“Lit Up” was mixed by the legendary Bob Clearmountain, whose studio credits include ‘Born In The U.S.A' and Bowie’s ‘Let's Dance’ to The Cure and The Rolling Stones.

The Bamboos eighth studio album ‘Night Time People’ will be released on June 8th, and is shaping to be the record that capitalises on the runaway success of "This Girl" and brings their infectious and modern take on a timeless sound to a whole new world of listeners.

Nel 1991 ha collaborato all'opera rock The Fall of the House of Usher di Peter Hammill (musica) e Judge Smith (libretto).

Marques Carroll & Trumpet Summit - In Stride We Keep Steppin' (Live at Andy's Jazz Club) 2018

The Trumpet Summit is led by Trumpeter Marques Carroll who helped birth the ensemble four years ago with trumpeters Marquis Hill and Shaun Johnson. Since then, the ensemble has gone through many changes as it has settled into its groove and voice to the music. The current lineup that includes Victor Garcia, Quentin Coaxum, Ryan Nyther (alternate), Amr Fahmy (piano), Andrew Vogt (bass) and Isaiah Spencer (drums) have dedicated the group to paying tribute to the great trumpeters of the Jazz idiom also known as BAM (Black American Music). The group has adapted original works from trumpeters Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Nicholas Payton, Lee Morgan, Clark Terry, Freddie Hubbard and others into their songbook through each member arranging for the ensemble while also presenting original works from each member as well. You can hear this ensemble on their latest work and debut album, In Stride We Keep Steppin’. The ensemble is in their fourth year residency at Andy's Jazz Club and will spend the majority of the year presenting original works from each artist in the group while dedicating one night a month to a particular trumpet player and other artists.

Bill Frisell - Music IS (OKEH RECORDS / SONY MUSIC March 16, 2018)

Almost every day, Bill Frisell gets up in the morning, has some coffee, and writes music. At this point, there are piles and piles and piles of single pages of staff paper filled with his graceful script. “I don’t know where the melodies come from,” says Frisell. “I try not to judge anything and just let them be.”

Frisell’s mantra, or motto so to speak, is, “Music is Good” – a statement said to him by his dear friend and great banjo player Danny Barnes. “That is something that I can say is always true. It’s so perfect. Everything I need to know is that phrase, ‘Music is Good.’ I almost called the album that, but then I thought that might be too literal. It’s good to leave it open.”

Music IS – to be released March 16 on OKeh/Sony Music Masterworks – marks the first solo album from the master of his craft since the release of Ghost Town, released on Nonesuch 18 years ago.

“Playing solo is always a challenge,” Frisell says. “For me, music has all along been so much about playing with other people. Having a conversation. Call and response. Playing all by myself is a trip. I really have to change the way I think. In preparation for this recording I played for a week at The Stone in New York. Each night I attempted new music that I’d never played before. I was purposely trying to keep myself a little off balance. Uncomfortable. Unsure. I didn’t want to fall back on things that I knew were safe. My hope was to continue this process right on into the studio. I didn’t want to have things be all planned out beforehand.”

Watch Frisell jam out on his new, alternate version of “Rambler” below. Click here to receive “Rambler” as an instant download when you preorder the album.

Charlie Peacock - When Light Flashes Help Is on the Way (2018)

Multifaceted Californian keyboardist Charlie Peacock, a Nashville resident, has built a personal vision of jazz deeply entangled with a myriad of styles such as funk, rock, folk, gospel, and pop, styles he continues to embrace whether as a composer, singer, instrumentalist, or record producer.

For his most recent album, When Light Flashes Help Is On the Way, he surrounded himself with a set of competent musicians who have demonstrated creative means to step up the eclectic compositions. Among them are his regular collaborator and member of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Jeff Coffin on saxophones and woodwinds, the impeccable Icelandic guitarist Hilmar Jensson, rock-centered guitarist Jerry McPherson, the melodious trumpeter Matthew White, the exciting electric bassist Felix Pastorius, and the undeviating drummer Ben Perowsky. Depending on the mood envisioned for a song, other members join the primary crew.

The opening track, “Wendell Berry in the Fields at Night”, flashes with a gaudy African kizomba rhythm and features authoritative saxophone solos flanked by accordion glibness. It's a very danceable piece.

“Blue Part II” is a free-funk exertion with Afro beats and other world music connotations. Melodically driven by trumpet, the tune acquires a special taste when Coffin, playing a heavenly flute, steps to the forefront to improvise over Perowsky’s steady drumming. The sparse fills have a very positive effect and the song ends with a trumpet-flute completion for the melody.

Dedicated to Herbie Hancock and his faithful producer David Rubinson, “Automatt” is another punch-drunk jazz-funk lifted by restless bass grooves executed with tapping technique and dipped in wha-wha effect. The electric guitar chops are dead-on, the fiddle injects a dramatic classical feel, and the pace is subjected to multiple variations before the band reaches the flamboyant finale.

If Daniel Lanois’ “Still Water” offers traditional pop textures with pronouncedly folk statements coming from the violin and the accordion, “Samuel and the Icelandic Indigo”, co-written by Peacock and Jensson, leaps into a sort of alternative jazz-rock while displaying beautiful acoustic guitar forays whose textural complexity recalls some older work by Marc Ribot.

Emotionally strong and sank in the fulfilling plucks delineated by the guest contrabassist Matt Wigton, “The Intimate Lonely” is an imaginative, trumpet-led ballad that also showcases the bandleader’s pianistic competence. Still, the peak of the emotions occurs on Bob Dylan’s hit “Masters of War”, here packed with devotional saxophone lines, uttering violin shrieks, and bluesy guitar ululations.

The record finishes with “Gift Economy”, a psychedelic blend of Tom Tom Club's humorous post-disco, Kraftwerk’s synthpop artificiality, and a more serious current of folk-rock. It acquires jazz contortions during the feline guitar solo regardless.

Charlie Peacock makes use of his cross-genre easiness with intelligence. Bountiful, he assures there is plenty of room for his peers to stretch out, orchestrating and leading as a legit master.

Option 3 - Peaberry (2018)

Recorded in 2013, this is Option 3's second release. Option 3 breathes new life into the familiar setting of the traditional jazz organ trio. Based in Los Angeles, organist Joe Bagg and guitarist Jamie Rosenn have united with Brooklyn drummer Mark Ferber to form a trio that specializes in original based, interactive, modern jazz. The three musicians developed their intuitive rapport over the past 10 years, performing and recording with the quintet, Us and Them, the Alan Ferber Septet and eventually became Option 3. Bagg has performed with such diverse artists as Bobby Hutcherson, Anthony Wilson and Madeleine Peyroux and has been in the Downbeat Critics Polls for 4 years running. Rosenn co-leads the bass-less trio JoE-LeSs shOe, which recently released its self titled debut and also teaches at the Musician's Institute and Saddleback College. Ferber has played with such notables as Lee Konitz, Fred Hersch, Billy Childs and Ralph Alessi. Option 3 released their first CD, "Points Subtracted" in 2008.

Bobby Previte - Rhapsody (RareNoise Records 2018)

In 2015, Previte received the Greenfield Prize in music at the Hermitage Artist Retreat to create a new work. Terminals Part II: In Transit (or RHAPSODY) is the result. RHAPSODY is the second in a three-part series exploring the experience of travel. Terminals Part I: DEPARTURES, is a set of five concertos written for the visionary percussion group SO Percussion and five improvisers. This piece premiered at Merkin Hall in New York City in 2011 and the recording was released on Cantaloupe Music in 2014. In RHAPSODY, the improvisers from DEPARTURES, each of whom had been selected based on their ability to separately carry fifteen-minute concertos, were thrown together into one ensemble.

Beginning from the point of view of a passenger sitting comfortably in an airplane, RHAPSODY twists and turns, until the traveler finally arrives at a strange shore - on a raft.

What is the experience of being in transit? Separated from your home but not yet at your destination, you are neither here nor there, confined with strangers in an intimate environment for a predetermined amount of time. Uncomfortable, yet somehow free. To travel is to be bound with these strangers by faith—faith in the vessel which carries you, faith in the people who operate it, and ultimately, faith in the strangers waiting at your destination.

"In what may prove to be a landmark event, New Music New College presented the world premiere of Bobby Previte’s “Rhapsody (Terminals Part II: In Transit)” at the Mildred Sainer Pavilion on the New College of Florida campus before a near-capacity and highly enthusiastic audience on Friday evening. The concert was the result of Previte winning the 2015 Greenfield Prize.

Composer Previte and his ensemble delivered a remarkably energetic and compelling performance. Their skill and unflagging energy proved to be essential to the performance of this challenging composition, focusing on a sometimes obscure scenario: a recreation of the experience of being “in transit” in life. Many of us have experienced the pervasive combination of both the excitement of discovery and the lack of traditional roots as we move forward in our lives and careers, but have seldom heard this sensation expressed publicly and so expertly as in this intense performance."

Victor Assis Brasil - Esperanto / Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim (FAR OUT RECORDINGS 2018)

Gifted his first saxophone by his aunt at the age of fourteen, only four years later the inherently gifted and determined young musician Victor Assis Brasil recorded his debut album, with a second to follow only a year later. The prodigious young carioca was subsequently granted a place to study at Berklee College of Music, where he played alongside the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Chick Corea and Ron Carter. It was also during this period he recorded Esperanto and Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim with Roberto Quartin, upon returning to Brazil in the summer of 1970.

Recorded in the same sessions as the Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim album, Esperanto consists of some of Assis Brasil's most mesmerising original compositions, as well as a heavy-swinging latin-jazz cover of Jimmy Heath’s ‘Ginger Bread Boy’. 'Quarenta Graus A Sombra’ typifies Assis Brasil's wild, frenetic jazz sound, while ‘Marilia’ and ‘Ao Amigo Quartin’ provide more melancholic moments. Esperanto’s influences span both American continents, finding a meeting point for Latin jazz and North American post-bop, with Roberto Quartin’s perfectionist approach to sound elevating the already incandescent music to divine new heights. The band consists of some mercurial greats of Brazilian music: Dom Salvador (bass), Edison Machado (drums), Helio Delmiro (guitar) and Edson Lobo (Bass)

On Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim, Victor Assis Brasil morphed Jobim’s soothing originals into raw, deep jazz cuts: a product of its time as the smooth 'n' easy groove of the bossa beat no longer reflected the politics of a nation under the cosh of military dictatorship.

Victor Assis Brasil passed away aged just thirty-five, due to a rare circulatory disease, but by this point his status was already cemented as one of the most talented musicians in Brazil’s history.
