Succi Saiu Papetti - Three Branches (2016)

Label: El Gallo Rojo Records

Paolo Fresu & Omar Sosa - Eros (2016)

Label:

Read more...

Wayne Slater - Birds Of Play (2016)

Label: Self Released

After working in Perth for almost ten years as a sideman, bassist Wayne Slater is proud to present his first jazz ensemble project as bandleader.

Hailing from Geelong, Wayne moved to WA to study music and graduated from WAAPA in 2006. He has since worked as a freelance bassist in many different bands around Perth; playing everything from Rock and Country to Trad Jazz and Soul. Dan Whieldon Trio - Positive Changes (2015)

Label:

Pianist Dan Whieldon hails from Manchester and has been active in the North West of England's jazz scene for the last decade. Positive Changes is his debut release as leader, made not with fellow Mancunians but with players from Belgium—where he studied and where the album was made—and Holland. Bill Evans is an acknowledged inspiration and Whieldon displays a confident and strongly melodic writing style—a mix that creates a readily accessible first outing.

Whieldon's lyrical piano opens "E. P." and establishes a calming, melodic, mood that sets the tone for much that comes after. So the entry of Philippe Aerts' emphatic double bass comes as a bit of a shock (in a good way). Drummer Hans Van Oosterhout follows a heartbeat later and the bass/drum pairing adds its drive and power to the leader's more delicate phrasing. Guest trumpeter Jean-Paul Estiévenart adds tonal variety with a bright, extrovert style on tunes such as "7." "Waltz For Ronnie" might take inspiration for its title from Evans' "Waltz For Debby"—it certainly shares much of that tune's warmth and romance.

Most of these compositions are Whieldon's originals but there's a cluster of well-known covers ("On Green Dolphin Street," "Nardis," "Speak Low") all of which get fresh interpretations from the band—"On Green Dolphin Street" benefits from a rather louche rhythm, "Speak Low" is taken at a fast tempo and gets its muscle from Whieldon and Aerts' bass line. More unexpectedly, there's Whieldon's meditative arrangement of Hubert Parry's "Repton" (better-known, probably, as the music for the hymn "Dear Lord And Father Of Mankind").

Jay Hoggard - Harlem Hieroglyphs (2016)

Label: JHVM Recordings

For vibraphonist Jay Hoggard, the content of composition is always fluid.
"It's a constant process of taking strands from this and that and putting them together for whatever you need them for," Hoggard says. "The name of something doesn't always mean that that's what it is."
Across decades of teaching and directing the Wesleyan Jazz Orchestra, Hoggard, 61, has remained a reliably innovative composer and recording artist, documenting his interests at every stage of his career: the music of vibraphone master Lionel Hampton (for whom Hoggard subbed in the 1990s), African-American spirituals and popular songs, excursions into various African diasporic rhythmic conceptions, even holiday music.
Few of Hoggard's earlier projects, however, approach the sweep of "Harlem Hieroglyphs," an expansive double album released March on his own JHVM Recordings label.
The recording pulls together strands from a previous suite, "Sonic Hieroglyphs from Wood, Metal and Skin," which premiered at Wesleyan in 2012, along with new original compositions, standards (by Duke Ellington, Sonny Rollins and others), new gospel and R&B-leaning flights and lengthy post-bop workouts, some of which approach the 10-minute mark.
"It was four years of composition and thinking about it," Hoggard says. "You can go from track to track and evoke a particular scene or image or painting. That's mostly how I think of it: Painting with a tonal palette."
This month, Hoggard celebrates "Harlem Hieroglyphs" with two presentations at Wesleyan: "Storied Places" (April 15-16; CFA Theater), a multimedia work with choreography by Nicole Stanton, narrative text by Lois Brown and visuals by L'Merchie Frazier; and a concert by his Harlem Hieroglyphs Ensemble (April 30; Crowell Concert Hall), featuring saxophonist René McLean, pianist/organist James Weidman, bassist Belden Bullock and drummer Pheeroan akLaff. Jesper Løvdal, Mathias Landaeus & Bob Gullotti (feat. Palle Danielsson) - Very Well Vol. 1 (2016)

Very Well Vol. 1 is the first release in a series from Jesper Løvdal, exploring the quartet format.

Very Well Vol. 1 brings together the best from two worlds and is a unique meeting of bass player Palle Danielsson (S) and drummer Bob Gullotti (US). The release sets new standards for the meeting between American jazz and the Scandinavian folk inspired music and melodic improvisation.

Saxophone player Jesper Løvdal and pianist Mathias Landæus have composed the music exept the beautiful and rarely recorded tune, I Get Along Without You Very Well, best known from the 1954 Chet Baker recording. Compositions and improvisations are woven together to a whole where borders are dissolved and the moorings that holds the art, is caped. The open sky awaits the listener on Very Well Vol. 1 whose titles all circles around the subject freedom.

Palle Danielsson is the personification of Scandinavian jazz and has created a personal bass sound that has been the basis of a number of world-known bands, amongst them the Keith Jarret European Quartet. Since the beginning of his career in the 1960s he has played with among others Bill Evans and Elvin Jones, and has been a unifying musical force in Scandinavia.

Bob Gullotti have through 40 years in the band The Fringe together with George Garzone and John Lockwood, cultivated a group sound, energy and philosophy that is one of the most admired on the scene today. He is a highly respected professor at Berklee College of Music, where he continues the proud drum tradition founded by his own teacher, Alan Dawson.

Mathias Landæus og Jesper Løvdal met each other 20 years ago in New York and this CD is the first documentation of their music together. The expression is extremely varied and present in the moment. Playing for the ensemble is first priority and there is no holding back. This is 100 percent honest music.

Butch Lacy / Jesper Løvdal / Kresten Osgood / Mark Dresser - Being Playing (2016)

Being Playing is a musical landscape that organically unfolds as a meditative story. The form is abstract and closer to the way of a modern classical composer than of straight ahead jazz.

This recording is a personal milestone for each of the musicians and opens up a new musical chapter in their musical odyssey.

The musicians come from different musical backgrounds, but do nevertheless have a clear mutual idea of how music has it’s own strong inner life, without the appearance of the musicians ego.

Mark Dresser is a legend in American improvised music and groundbreaking on the double bass, which he has given an entirely new voice. After many years of living in New York playing with Anthony Braxton, Tim Berne, Ray Andersson and John Zorn, he is now a professor at San Diego University where he met Butch Lacy 35 years ago.

Butch played at the time with Sarah Vaughan’s trio but shortly after he moved to Denmark where he has been living since. He has transformed the Danish jazz environment in many ways with his playing, as well as his charismatic teaching at conservatories all over the country. Butch Lacy has composed for both symphony orchestra and big band, and his Very Big Band. A combination of both was an important musical experiment in Denmark.

Jesper Løvdal is too young to have been taught by Butch Lacy in Copenhagen, but he was highly fascinated by his spiritual playing from a young age and has been playing duo with him for 10 years. When Mark Dresser, Butch Lacy and Jesper Løvdal met for a concert in Copenhagen where magic occurred from the first sound, it was a necessity to go into the studio and bring the young drummer that originally brought Butch and Jesper together, Kresten Osgood. Osgood has his roots in jazz but plays with an universal artistic expression which lives very much in the present moment, and melts together with the rest of the band.

Jesper Løvdal: alto flute, tenor saxophone, contrabass clarinet
Mark Dresser: bass
Kresten Osgood: drums

Silvain Beuf - Plenitude (2015)

Label:
Source: Citizen Jazz
