Bill Charlap Trio - Uptown, Downtown (IMPULSE! RECORDS 2017)

Pianist Bill Charlap in a hell of a trio – working here with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington – both players who make the record bristle with fresh energy right from the start! Charlap's command of tone and timing are as wonderful here as on other records – already a great enough start in itself – but Kenny's well-paced work on drums, and those warmly-crafted lines on bass from Peter make the whole album a real treat – almost back to the kinds of surprising moments that both Washingtons brought to trio dates back in the 90s. If you're a Charlap fan, don't worry – Bill's style is very firmly in the lead here – but if you're looking for something extra, too, you'll definitely find it here – on titles that include "Satellite", "There's A Small Hotel", "I'm All Smiles", "Uptown Downtown", "Curtains", and "Bon Ami". © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Brian Newman, singer, trumpeter and Verve recording artist, is gearing up for the release of his new album with the launch of a four-city “after hours” club tour that kicks off in Chicago on August 25th, as well as new track "Sunday in New York."

The tour dates coincide with Lady Gaga’s Joanne World Tour dates so Mother Monster fans can catch Brian’s performance directly after her show ends in those markets. Lady Gaga has often made surprise appearances at Newman’s club dates in the past.

Bill Charlap & The European Jazz Piano Trio - Artfully Vol. 2 (BLAU RECORDS 2017)

Bill Charlap’s touch on the keyboard is light, almost stealthy, even when playing full chords, but always firm, clear and beautifully articulated. With the spirited support of Mark Hodgson bass and Stephen Keogh drums, it shows a trio which is, arguably, one of the best at casting spells. It has an ease and elegance that are rarely found in jazz.

This new album is the second instalment of a collection of recordings made at London’s Pizza Espress in 2011. As Scott Hamilton writes in the liner notes of the first volume “this is the type of trio which one dreams in finding out, great soloists with a huge sense of swing”

There is a magic peculiar to piano trios; an atmosphere so wrapped that even up tempo pieces feels like ballads. Bill Evans could create that hush, or Keith Jarrett and a very few others and this includes, as well, Bill Charlap.

Bill Charlap Trio - Notes from New York (2016)

Label: ¡Impulse!
Source: Zikeo
