Calum Builder - Messe (You are where you need to be) September 24, 2021 ILK Music

This album came about as I reconciled with the deconstruction of my faith. This work is dedicated to those who are also in between worlds or have not known where they belong or what they believe. It can be quite disorientating. However, I have become increasingly aware that in this life to have true faith is not to be resolute, but to sit in the tension of it all and watch the mystery unfold. It’s an openhanded faith, honest and broken — and therein is where the beauty lies.

Toldam / Riedel / Berg / Wiklund / Christensen - Tak for dit brev (ILK Music 2021)

“I see experiences as letters that are sent to me. With this album, I’m replying.” – Simon Toldam

The songs on Tak for dit brev (Thank You For Your Letter), the new album from Danish pianist and composer Simon Toldam, are a series of musical letters inspired by personal transformative events and a tribute to the daily shared experience of being unavoidably affected by both the positive and disheartening things around us.

On Tak for dit brev, Toldam explores a melodically-motivated sonic landscape, marking a departure from his more recent chord-centric work. He wrote most of the songs on clarinet, which applied new parameters and added new character to the process. Writing on a single-voice instrument (limited to playing one note at a time) demands and offers a different compositional approach than a multi-voiced instrument like piano does.

This opened up new structural doors to Toldam, compelling him to create the melodic material first, thereafter creating the harmonic context and arrangement around it. His marvelous ability to absorb and create music from surprising and fascinating angles is on full display here as he presents songs which orbit around strong melodies and shine with unabashed influence from Scandinavian Folk and Jazz musical traditions.

For the recording session at Stockholm’s Atlantic Studio in June of 2019, Toldam invited legendary Swedish bassist and composer, Georg Riedel (born 1934). Among other things, Riedel is known for his celebrated collaborations with Swedish pianist Jan Johansson (appearing on the timeless masterpiece, JAZZ PÅ SVENSKA), as well as having scored several Astrid Lindgren films, including Pippi Longstocking, Emil of Maple Hills, and many more. The rest of the band includes some of the most original voices and instrumental story-tellers in Scandinavia – Nils Berg on bass clarinet, Tobias Wiklund on cornet, and Anders Christensen on bass.

Tak for dit brev is Toldam’s 15th album as leader and co-leader. He is a recipient of the prestigious 3-year Working Grant from the Danish Arts Council, and a winner of5 Danish Jazz Grammys (Danish Music Awards), most recently “Jazz Album of the Year” in 2019 for his trio recording, OMHU.

Jakob Davidsen feat. Sissel-Vera Pettersen & Randi Pontoppidan - Silence Trio 2 (ILK MUSIC 2018)

"Silence Trio Series" is the new work by Danish pianist and composer Jakob Davidsen. During the three years 2017-2019, he will release three different trio CDs, all with serenity, rigor, genre freedom and silence as the common theme.

These three publications can be perceived as both a collective work and the statement of an individual.

First edition of "Silence Trio", with the Norwegian saxophonist Torben Snekkestad and Danish / French guitarist Hasse Poulsen, was released in the summer of 2017 and received great reviews in most of the world. Among other things, the reputed American magazine "New York City Jazz Records" chose the CD for one of 2017's most remarkable releases worldwide. The next to follow is "Silence Trio 2" with the Norwegian singer Sissel Vera Pettersen and the Danish singer Randi Pontoppidan.

In 2019, "Silence Trio 3" ends with the participation of the Norwegian drummer Thomas Strønen and the Danish bassist Jesper Egelund.

"Silence Trio Series" is published by the uncompromising Danish label, "Ilk-Music".

The trio of "Silence Trio 2" first met during the Copenhagen Jazz Festival in 2015 where they played a very atmospheric concert, about which the critic of the Danish newspaper, “Politiken”, Christian Munch-Hansen, wrote:

"It was a very special audio universe that met one, with the beautifully colored voices of two experimental singers and rhythmic improvisations that spread in space as fragments of dreams, combined in a very nice way with Jakob Davidsen's highly present piano, also guided by the momentum and spontaneous invitations.

And Davidsen has the sense of contrasts of the experienced chamber musician and improviser - with his abrupt piano figures over the hovering sirens, or vice versa: beautifully circling sounds against the women's sound-playing, rattling percussion and deep vocal drones. "

About the musicians on “Silence Trio 2”:

In their duo, “Lift”, Sissel Vera Pettersen og Randi Pontoppidan have developed a very personal sound for the past 15 years, with their voices and electronics. They strike musical elements such as pygmy song, joik, vocalise, human beat box, jazz and Scandinavian hymns. Individually, they have performed in projects including Lionel Louke, Trondheim Jazz Orchestra and Paul Hillier's Theatre of Voices. The pianist and composer Jakob Davidsen is known for his pioneer work with music in the border between improvisation and composition. It has resulted in 3 Danish Music Awards, the Honorary Prize of The Danish Composers Association, DJBFA, more than 15 CD releases in his name and concerts in Europe and South America.

"When the whole world is shouting on the top of each other you can either choose to participate with even louder and more penetrating shouts. Or you can keep silent or speak in a low voice insisting that the silent and the subdued may reveal more depths and nuances than any superficial roar."

Jacob Anderskov - Mysteries (ILK MUSIC 2018)

Listening to KINETICS is a physical, sensual and energetic experience. Their music balances between pulse and no pulse, between groove and creativity, between beauty and abstraction. It’s about feeling, vibe, and structure. The crucial things in the music are – as always with Kinetics – beat, flow, expressiveness and momentum.

Kinetics has been playing intensively around northern Europe since its formation in 2014. The tour up to this recording started in London, featuring the legendary Evan Parker, and passed through several countries before ending at LOFT in Köln, where this album was recorded.

Side A of the LP is the end of the first set, side B is the opening of the second set. So you could argue that the 7 compositions on the album are done in one long take. (The band name) Kinetics, a branch of classical mechanics, is concerned with forces on bodies in motion. This no matter if these bodies be drones, drum sticks or planets – and relating to as well the movement through a terrain as that through outer space to another planet. (The album title), Mysteries, points beyond the physical domain, and into our interpretations of the forces behind the physical phenomena. It suggests an opening towards realms bigger or more incomprehensible than ours. To phenomena that will exist when we are no more here.

Ran Blake / Kresten Osgood - The Dorothy Wallace Suite (ILK MUSIC 2017)

This is the much awaited duo album of Danish drum innovator Kresten Osgood and American piano genius Ran Blake. more than 40 years of age divide them, but they meet in a contemporary expression. The Dorothy Wallace Suite is a suite composed especially for this project by Ran Blake and is a heartfelt tribute to the great Dorothy Wallace who was a patron of the arts in Boston and played a vital part in Ran Blake´s art. This is only the second time in the entire Ran Blake discography where he plays duo with drums. The suite is recorded in Brookline on a piano of Ran Blake´s choice.

Omdrejninger - S / T (ILK MUSIC 2017)

Omdrejninger is a unique project conceived by sound-installation artist Christian Skjødt and composer, and guitarist Mark Solborg aiming at investigating and challenging the listening experience for both musicians and audience. A site-specific work for ensemble, space and loudspeakers. Solborg and Skjødt call it a spatial instrument. It is played by these amazing artists:

In brief the music consists of composed and improvised pieces played by a handpicked ensemble and then processed through a system developed and designed specifically for the project. The system (the patch) can only treat what it receives from the ensemble and the microphones. Delay, enlarge, distort, sample, and geographical displace through the speakers in different patterns and tempi. The audience is placed around the ensemble, the loudspeakers around everybody. An original version of a contemporary and very special listening experience. Another type of communication of relatively abstract music and sound.

The first version of Omdrejninger was a commission by the Wundergrund festival, premiered  in KoncertKirken at Nørrebro. The participants was, besides Skjødt and Solborg, the legendary german trumpet-player Axel Dörner, cellist Jakob Kullberg, vocalist Michael Rexen  and drummer Bjørn Heebøll. It was an intense  and unique experience for both audience and musicians.

“..a sensation of a spatial instrument with the powers to lift and take off with all of us.” - Laura Berivan Nilsson, Omlyd

During Copenhagen Jazzfestival 2015 another edition was brought to life. This time with an explosive combination of Dörner, the Norwegian percussionist Ingar Zach, Solborg and Skjødt.

Both editions where recorded in sound and picture by The Lake Radio, John Fomsgaard, a.o. Then it was processed, mixed and mastered by Solborg and Skjødt in collaboration with true experts within the field. The result is a limited deluxe 2x180g vinyl album with two visual renditions by director and cutter Laurits Flensted-Jensen in video-format with surround audio (5.1.) on a USB stick and a photo-montage with pictures by Peter Ganushkin, Hanne Budtz-Jørgensen and Raphael Frisenvænge. The release is also available in a reduced version on CD and digitally.

Omdrejninger holds a dense and nuanced sound-universe in many layers. We recommend good listening equipment, or headphones , for a full and detailed experience.

Enjoy !

This album and the performances of Omdrejninger are supported by Gong Tomorrow, Koncertkirken Blågård, Statens Kunstfond, DJBFA / Komponister og Sangskrivere and Koda, Dansk Kapelmesterforening, Goethe-Institut Dänemark and JazzDanmark.

Damaztra - Flag of Time (ILK MUSIC 2017)

Danstrup, Mazur and Tranberg are all well-known personalities on the Danish and international music scene. They have long ago made themselves known in widely different contexts – from the very top of jazz musicians to the more humble, experimenting venues.

On their first release together they have created a wild flower of music with colours, scents, thorns and shapes of all kinds. Most of the music is improvised, grading the music with a unique scenic, vivid and dramatic tone. The 3 musicians unfold themselves in a breath taking, vibrating room, and both the collective as well as the individual efforts are noteworthy. The depth and clarity in the overall sound makes the music present, and the musicians have taken themselves on an astonishing journey where nothing is inevitable.

The critically acclaimed trio The Firebirds is releasing their second album ALADDIN’S DREAM! The album is a tribute to the Danish composer Carl Nielsen, and the trio hereby continues their work with arranging classical orchestra pieces into their own unique blend of impro, surf, blues and avantgarde.

"Can a Jazz trio really play classical orchestra-pieces? For the three gentlemaen in The Firebirds no challenge seems big enough." (Gaffa, Live-review 2016).

Peter Danstrup - Sacrified (2016) ILK MUSIC

The Project
From the beginning this project was an attempt to work with dogmas and stay focused on some important topics. One was to make a band with a reversed gender balance as a direct answer to the never-ending discussion about women and non-classical music. At least in Denmark this topic keeps popping up, so I thought I would write music for a band where women are the majority – aware that as long as I am the sole (male) composer, the experiment is not 100% valuable.

Another was to work with vocals and lyrics. This has been the biggest challenge for me in a long time. On top of that – I got inspired when visiting an Edvard Munch exhibition in Norway – the lyrics should be in English and be related to religion. At the museum, they quoted Munch for his personal ambition with his art, and it had a great influence on my construction of the dogmas. The quote is: There will be no more pictures of interiors, of people reading and women knitting. There will be pictures of real people who breathed, suffered, felt, loved… I will paint a series of such pictures. People should understand the significance, the power of it. They should remove their hats like they do in church. This gave me the inspiration to write in English and that religion in one way or the other should be in the centre of it all. This has of course nothing to do with Munch’s ambition, but I was keen on using obstacles and finding some topics that would not be easy.

I’ve never understood why Danish composers/songwriters address their (Danish) audience in a foreign language. By forcing myself to do the same thing I might find out about it. And yes: you can hide yourself behind a language.

I’ve never been a religious person, but I have met some very interesting priests in my life, all of them representing a just, human and surprisingly radical interpretation of faith: Love thy neighbour, turn the other cheek, help the poor, suppress your greed and egoism etc. Nowadays I hardly find it anymore, but I do hear so-called religious people use the same reasoning to harbour exactly the opposite: fear thy neighbour, don’t help those who need it, never turn the other cheek but fight back. If this music could stand up against this I would be happy.

Some of the lyrics are quotes more or less directly from the Bible, others are just related to religion.
In the Beginning, well… Genesis 1; The Angel Came to Mary Luke 1 26-38, The Birth of Jesus Foretold; Blessed are the Poor Luke 6, 20-26, Blessings and Woes; The Gates of Jericho Joshua 2 and 6, Rahab and the Spies and the Conquest of Jericho; The Tower of Babylon Genesis 11; Chasing After the Wind Ecclesiastes 1, 3, 7, Pleasures are Meaningless, A Time for Everything, Wisdom is meaningless. Other lyrics play with the thought of what would happen if Jesus actually returned to the Earth again. Angels are also covered both as messengers and lovers/friends. And the humorous I’m confessing deals with sin and forgiveness and the impossible task to live a perfect life.

The music
When I started on this project I found myself in a field where some of the giants of composition has been before and already has set standards that will be very hard to meet. Knowing that from early times artists had no other choice than to express themselves within the borders of religion (talk about dogmas…)

I somehow felt a great responsibility and also a heavy challenge to move into the realm. So, apart from working with lyrics, the epic element in the music should support the message and somehow be the dynamic force of the sound. In this context I have been in contact with genres that I’ve never worked with before and the vocals and lyrics has a tendency to emphasize it.

You can find elements of musical, marches, tango and even twist. Although the harmonic side of it all has a tendency towards a jazzier and - at times - dissonant expression I still feel that this music shows many new colours of my musical style.

The orchestra
After listening a lot to Henry Threadgill’s music I found that it would be interesting to work with a line-up with cello, tuba and flute. On top of that I would – for the first time – also use the piano in the band. So the first recordings were with a septet with bass and tuba along with the cello in the bottom and flute and vocals on top and with the piano connecting the different voices.

The second recording session was set a time, where the tuba player was in Japan, so I added a French horn as this beautiful instrument covers both the bottom and the midrange. And at the final recordings I could use them both thus having a nice brassy sound. However, it is not an instrumentation that just blends naturally and I have been working with many different colourings and combination of sounds to explore the possibilities. And the question of female musicians? We have never paid attention to it in the band.

It is a somehow irrelevant parameter to use in evaluating the music, but it doesn’t mean that the topic itself is peripheral. I do hope we will hear more female musicians in the future and I also hope that recordings like this will help to encourage young women to play an instrument.

The Cover
At the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow I saw this astonishing Dali painting and found that it expressed an interesting new angle of a classical theme: the crucifixion. There is no blood, no spikes, no crown of thorns, instead it has a dreamy and utopian thing to it that I find covers my intensions. The cover is a detail from the upper part of the picture.

Mark Solborg & Herb Robertson - Tuesday Prayers (Live) 2016 ILK MUSIC

present

After having performed three intense concerts with drummer Peter Bruun and bassist Mats Eilertsen in a little more than 24 hours at Kongsberg and Copenhagen Jazz Festival in July 2014, American trumpet icon Herb Robertson and Danish guitarist Mark Solborg paid a visit to Koncertkirken, an old church in downtown Copenhagen for a duo performance.

That Tuesday evening the music was more calm and contemplative than usual. The large room and beautiful acoustics breathed life into transparent motives, hymns, shouts and expressive textures. Essentially a musical dialogue between friends. Pensive prayers of peace is what you hear on this live-recorded duo album. Music for the quiet of late nights or early mornings.

Tuesday Prayers is available digitally and in a beautiful recycled-paper and non-glue pack- age containing CD and high resolution download. With the kind permission of the Nelleman family and Clausens Kunsthandel the package holds an original etching by Danish graphic artist par excellence Rasmus Nelleman (1923-2004): “Ledninger 1991” (“Wires 1991”). To Herb and Mark the artwork seems to resonate with the transparency and clear structures of the music within. Please visit www.clausenskunsthandel.dk for more information and a world of orginal Danish graphic artwork. The vinyl edition is in the pipeline.

The collaboration between Robertson and Solborg began in 2008 and includes the critically acclaimed albums: Herb Robertson/Mark Solborg NOD (ILK152CD) and Mark Solborg Trio feat. Herb Robertson and Evan Parker: The Trees (ILK199CD). Since then they have performed as a duo and with Mark Solborg Trio at multiple international festivals and venues in Central Europe, Scandinavia, Syriah, a.o.
