Warped Dreamer - Lomahongva (February 2022 Off - record label)

A “dream line-up” is possibly the best way to describe Warped Dreamer. Few quartets succeed in bowling over their audiences in such diverse ways as this quartet led by drummer Teun Verbruggen. This versatile Belgian percussionist puts together four top-notch musicians from the Belgian and Norwegian scenes, who bring out the best in each other on stage. Teun likes to be startled by collaborations with wayward musicians, musicians who inspire him because they rediscover and reinvent themselves each time again. He had already hooked up with trumpeter Arve Henriksen and with Jozef Dumoulin (Rhodes) previously. Guitarist Stian Westerhus is the right fit and perfectly complements the quartet. Include a big display of effects pedals and you get a music genre that defies any attempt at classification.

Free improvisation, jazz residue and electronic interventions/manipulations are woven together in an organically flowing crossover that both hints at a Northern vastness and utilises a complex inner map that guides the audience past labyrinthine horizons, intricate textures and spontaneous interactions. As such, they incorporate both crackling, whirling walls of sound and claustrophobic whispers. 

Warped Dreamer is definitely looking forward in a way that makes the question whether it’s in or out completely irrelevant. It’s everywhere at once. The band gets its name from an Othin Spake composition, another of Teun Verbruggen’s experimental bands, and also shares the same fickle, mysterious city vibe. If you like improv, you are in for a treat!

Dans le paysage du jeune jazz français actuel, Pj5 n’offre pas la moins pertinente des propositions musicales. Ce groupe au sens plein du terme doit son identité avant tout à un son, qui combine ses couleurs pop-rock à sa culture de l’improvisation, capable d’allier une densité dérivée du death metal avec des formes de musiques de chambre contemplative, aux confins du minimalisme et de la folk, tout en développant sa sensibilité jazz ultra contemporaine. Lauréat du dispositif « Jazz Migration », constitué depuis plusieurs années par des musiciens de la même génération particulièrement soudés, Pj5 signe un troisième disque au déroulé cinétique, dont les accents épiques alternent avec la simplicité de ritournelles, les orages électriques avec de délicats tramages sonores. Pensé en écho aux mystères et aux périls de l’existence, « I Told The Little Bird » résonne d’un état du monde qui oscille magnifiquement entre lumière et chaos, désespérance et espoirs, distorsion et résolution. Avec la participation de la chanteuse Isabel Sorling et de Jozef Dumoulin au Fender Rhodes, un album en forme d’odyssée sonore. 

In the current landscape of young French jazz, Pj5 offers one of the most pertinent musical propositions. This is a group in the full meaning of the term, whose identity comes above all from a sound: a certain capacity to densify the derivative sound of death metal, with the shapes of contemplative contemporary chamber music, the borders of minimalism and folk, fuelled with their personal contemporary jazz sensibility and improvisations. A laureate of the ‘Jazz Migration’ program for upcoming talents, composed of five French musicians from the same generation, Pj5 releases a third album displaying a band striving for purity and nuance, energy and intensity in order to accomplish a music capable of moving from epic accents to the simplicity of jingles, from electric storms to delicate sound patterns. "Orca Noise Unit is based on an anagram of —oneironautics—, which refers to the ability to travel within a dream on a conscious basis. Those who have already kept a dream journal know what it feels like to go back and read over older parts. Some dream accounts have a lot of details, others evoke not much more than just a vibe. Some can be read like a full story, whereas others have no beginning, or no end, or neither. Sometimes we were genuinely lucid at the moment of the dream - or at least had a clear perception of things - whereas at other moments we were totally immersed in the projected reality.

But together the stories always make sense in a very particular way that is difficult to describe. When I was putting this record together I understood at some point that this was the perfect image for what I was trying to do. The feeling I got when listening to the whole of the final versions of the songs was very similar to the one I get when I’m dealing with my own dream world and my dream journal.

This was a new sensation for me. I let it be the guide for the final adjustments of the music and I’m very happy and excited to have been able to turn that atmosphere into a musical form.”
