Ce trio mythique de la scène française des années 80, composé d’Olivier Hutman, Marc Bertaux et Tony Rabeson, a enregistré deux disques en 1983 et 1987. Ils figurent parmi les références obligées du jazz et de la fusion française et leur a permis d’obtenir en 1984 le prix Boris Vian de l’Académie du Jazz.

Après des parcours respectifs bien remplis tant en sideman qu’en leader (Eddy Louiss, Lee Konitz, Didier Lockwood,… pour Marc Bertaux ; TootsThielemans, Jo Lovano, Martial Solal… pour Tony Rabeson ; Stéphane Grappelli, Barney Wilen, Dee Dee Bridgewater… pour Olivier Hutman) le trio se retrouve enfin et prend comme nom BeatGames.

Il redécouvre avec délectation le plaisir de jouer avec le beat, qu’il maîtrise à la perfection. Le lyrisme à l’absolu contrôle de la basse de Marc Bertaux et l’inventivité de la batterie à nulle autre pareille de Tony Rabeson déroulent des chausse-trappes et des bottes secrètes sous les claviers jubilatoires d’Olivier Hutman.

Les retrouvailles de ces trois stylistes sont une vraie fête qu’ils ne demandent qu’à partager….

You can almost hear their restlessness: listen the two saxophonists enter the arena, Peter King on alto, Jean Toussaint on tenor. Playfully, they try to reach each other’s registry—the alto scraping for its lower notes while the tenor goes through the higher octaves. And in two of the tunes they have the young Sylvain Beuf join in for the games. At the piano? Alain Jean-Marie, immediately recognizable by his unrivaled touch and swing, by the elegance without flourishes that he has always represented. The many colors of Tony Rabeson on drums: revel in his solo on Minor Mood. And in some tunes George Brown replaces him with his bold, unpredictable swing, unrivaled in the history of Parisian jazz! And behind this beautiful scene Gildas Souarnec, composer and bassist. Not all the tunes are his —for example Shorter, composed by Peter King, who quotes Nefertiti with admiration and a hint of mischief—but you can hear the leader’s hand in most of them: his enthusiastic proposals, the interplay between the voices of the saxophones, the melodic charm of Valse pour Margot…

And through all of it, a beautiful bass, natural, fair and full bodied, unfiltered by amplification, delivering the sound of the fingers and the string—a real taste of the authentic without added colorings and preservatives, as fresh today as the day it was made!

Fourth production of the ALEA label, second volume of Pierre de Bethmann’s ESSAIS, two years and nearly sixty concerts after the first volume was released in 2015.

With Sylvain Romano on the double bass and Tony Rabeson on the drums, the trio pursues its journey, gleaning ideas from every new shared experience, continuing its exploration of a variety of musical traditions, subjecting each member’s choices to different arrangements, and above all to the spirit of the moment.

The same spirit which led the three musicians back to the Recall Studio in June 2017 to record their new album, in a setup drawing each time closer to live conditions, in an exceptional setting capable of suspending time and capturing the raw energy of musicians only too eager to play.

All of this results in a selection of ten pieces dating from 1707 to 1985 – written by different composers from the two sides of the Atlantic Ocean – which some will regard as standards.

A new album also conceived as a big thank you to those who programmed, hosted, and supported the trio on its different journeys over the last two years, and to those who will inspire the journeys to come.
