Peeter Uuskyla / Tellef Øgrim / Anders Berg / Harri Sjöström - OSLO OCTOBER 10, 2021 (January 2022)

The key and the story of this group-made music is as I see the function of my drumming.

This band was made up by bassist Anders Berg when he asked me to send him some of my drum solo recordings for him to play along with and record.

Then he passed that further on to guitarist Tellef Øgrim to add his sounds.

The trio album titled Ullr by Uuskyla Øgrim & Berg was born that way in the winter of 2016/2017.

Live concerts followed and on one of them soprano saxophonist Harri Sjöström joined the band.

The LP Kafé Hærverk 17.11.18 (Hærverk Industrier HÆ003) was released 2019 and on the last track the trio became a quartet with Sjöström.

Here are the latest live recordings from this band at Kafé Hærverk in OSLO, OCTOBER 10, 2021 // Peeter Uuskyla

Peeter Uuskyla / Tellef Øgrim / Anders Berg / Harri Sjöström - Tlaxkon / Soft City / Have a Drink, Have a Drive (December 2021 Simlas produksjoner)

This quartet's music is an oblique and deconstructed but red-hot mix of jazz, rock, and several other styles in between. It's taut and metallic, sprung, flexed and twisted, hitting hard on the recoil.

Lars Larsson / Peeter Uuskyla - Bark at Themselves (August 4, 2021 Simlas Produksjoner)

The remaining audience is a handful of listeners who think it's fun with live music in general. The atmosphere will be relaxed and pleasant, after the gig you can eat a muffin and talk to the musicians. Peeter Uuskyla told about coincidences that brought him and Peter Brötzmann to Mexico City and a ten-day gig with local musicians.

Or collaboration with Mikolaj Trzaska in Gdansk. And then he remembered the quote from Povel Ramel - "coffee with bop". Lars Larsson had been to Eksjö before, played on the city party's big stage with Caroline af Ugglas. The live market in general was quite gloomy. Playing was possible. Getting paid was harder!

The music on Monday was a long improvisation that always remained within the "imaginative" subdivision of free improvisation. Larsson tore up and sang with various melody fragments in a still cohesive and meaningful way. Uuskyla kept a few different rhythmic figures going in parallel with a great freedom of expression. Dynamic and responsive interaction!

A pleasant experience, both musically and socially! - Jan Strand / Orkesterjournalen

Uuskyla Øgrim & Berg - Svuku (August 4, 2021)

Free jazz power trio Uuskyla Øgrim & Berg’s music is an oblique and deconstructed but red-hot mix of jazz, rock, and several other styles in between. It’s taut and metallic, sprung, flexed and sinuous, hitting hard on the recoil. This trio shows how much the Scandinavian scene remains vibrant and with names that deserve to be more recognized worldwide.

Mike Lloyd / Peeter Uuskyla / Gunnar Backman / Anders Berg - Leavings (July 29, 2021)

I have a soft spot for Peeter Uuskyla and his loose, deceptively clumsy style of drumming. Here, he is accompanied by Mike Lloyd on trumpet, Gunnar Backman on fretted and fretless virtual guitar (possibly the storied Yggdrasil) and live loops, and his long-time companion-at-arms Anders Berg on bass.

I am familiar with some of Uuskyla and Berg’s previous work. I am less familiar, however, with Lloyd and Backman. Both have appeared on previous Simlas releases, sometimes together and sometimes, in the case of Backman, with other configurations of an apparently tight circle of musicians featured on Simlas (run by guitarist Tellef Øgrim and Berg) and Backman’s own label, Brakophonic Records.

In other words, most of these musicians seem to play together frequently. (Lloyd may be an outlier in that respect when it comes to Uuskyla, but the claim certainly applies to the rest of combinations.) Although the music itself can hardly be called “tight,” that familiarity shows in the Leavings. As the cover art shows, each musician can be thought of one within an interlocking system of gears. When one gears turns, the others must as well. If one were to stop abruptly, the others would have to follow suit. Were one to malfunction, the entire apparatus would be rendered kaput. I do not want to make too much of this image. Gears, of course, have no volition and no recourse outside of their track. When working properly, they do not take detours or try new things. The whole image, of course, is too mechanical to be perfect. But, as free music lovers would likely agree, the pursuit is not reproducibility or mere function, but an unexpectedly moving whole.

And that is what Leavings achieves. Uuskyla sweeps one direction with his blustery rolls. Berg lays an unsteady beat that collides with Uuskyla’s bass drum. Lloyd offers muffled fanfares and restrained runs that reference electric Miles, though it shies from the intensity and funk that Miles so perfectly harnessed. And Lloyd, alternates between disrupted radio-wave atmospherics, feedback-laden background fidgeting, and straight-up shredding. This sounds psychedelic without the polish and pop. It sounds like a less manic Acid Mother’s Temple, before their morning cup of coffee (or, maybe, in the laggard after-hours of the night), fumbling in search of some indeterminate magical combination of sound. It is fusion played by free jazz musicians. Or, free jazz played by prog rockers who found that too restrictive and jam bands too long-winded. Or, something of the sort. I am not sure which direction these sessions went in. I can say, however, that this album rocks, through and through. This may not be music that blows you away, but it is music that, if you heard it at a friend’s house (were that still a thing in these times), you would likely say, “Wild stuff. Tenor sax, clarinet, alto sax (track 6), cover art: Peter Brötzmann
Drums and album producer: Peeter Uuskyla
Engineer at Bohus Sound Recording: Dragan Tanaskovic

Recorded September 9, 2006 at Bohus Sound Recording, Sweden.
Originally released 2008 by Atavistic, USA as the 2CD-album Born Broke 2008 and the longest track "Dead and Useless" was released on 12" vinyl by Omlott, Sweden 2014.

+ The first tour ever with this Brötzmann/Uuskyla sax and drum duo was happening the week prior the studio recording date. An audience DAT-walkman recorder captured the concert at the Nefertiti jazzclub in Gothenburg on September 2, 2006. On track 5-9 you hear the first sketches of what was to become the musical statement titled Born Broke a week later.

PETER BRÖTZMANN asked me to write some notes about me walking the quite hard and dirty road of musicmaking. The liferoad of the one life you have. Been fighting all the time for playing untouchable sounds of simple music, my definition of beauty. Untouchable, therefore powerful. Simple, therefore universal, for everyone. Music that belongs to everybody. Take it or leave it, but you are not able to keep it only for yourself. That´s the strength. Sometimes the struggle is too hard and you just have enough of the terrible conditions around the playing. The lowbudget touring, the stupidity, the curators, the organizers, the ones with power to decide who plays where and what.

Geniusgrants killing natural musicmaking because of simple music being just to simple, not being complex and confusing enough. To illustrate bigheaded nonsense with living music makes you fall into a trap where pure joyful musicmaking is forbidden although sold as free jazz, freely improvised, spontaneous, creative music! This is the situation you have to deal with. Days of solidarity and bands kept together are long gone. Replaced by common egopower and loneliness among millions of lonely people in the big cities. You are also alone when making your musical statement. Alone together but still basically alone. Got to be strong to face that kind of reality. My eternal Sisyphusical circle is playing music for the strength to keep going.

Nobody tells me anymore what and whom to play with. Not even Peter Brötzmann. He anyway never has. I have always liked his way of making music with his beautiful, deep, total sounding horn. No rehearsals, instead you have to bring yourself together, prepare, get ready, concentrate, pay attention and when time comes take off. That´s the way this music is made. Dragan Tanaskovic recorded the small drumkit and the saxophone with his old tube microphones in his large studioroom.

Quite a comfortable recording situation. No amplification, not even monitorspeakers or headphones needed for this duo. The punch and the scream, the foundation of natural musicmaking! Living in this complicated, complex and confused society it is most important to make clear and honest statements. PEETER UUSKYLA

Do you remember the legendary CD Legba Crossing released on FMP? Of course, you do! Each Cecil Taylor's music fan does it! Two years later Ove Volquartz assembled almost the same line-up and brought Cecil Taylor to Gottingen to work with the legendary artist longer and more intense. Here you have the whole monumental concert they gave on September 15th! What is the difference? Fundamental as always in the case of such great visionaries like Cecil was! Here, additionally, Mr. Taylor performs not only as a director and conductor but also as a full-time pianist!!!!!!! So let's discover what happened in 1990 at Junges Theater in Gottingen!!!!!

Biggi Vinkeloe / Barre Phillips / Ken Filiano / Peeter Uuskyla - The Forgotten Song (April 2021)

"What I can recall is that the extra double bass did not distract from Biggi’s usual tasteful use of space. There was also a buoyancy that is also present in this quartet that took the music into different realms." - Russell Summers, who was at the concert.

When Bill Dixon said each person is their own orchestra, it took me a bit to get my head around what he meant.

The access to so many timbres and registers the contemporary improviser has can be used to make space in the music without the use of silence. An improviser can re-orchestrate themselves in the moment thereby leaving an open space where they were before. The traditional concept of the drum set always had this extreme register change in it, which is why drummers like Peeter Uuskyla can access this idea with no problem.

It also explains why the addition of Ken Filiano opens up the trio futher rather than adding density. Both bassists work on each side of an imaginary "bass part", Alan Silva once talked about the bass being able to cover the full range of the string family, it always seemed to be that in a small "jazz group" format, we bassists role was actually the string section and not just the low end. Of course, each of these traditional ideas has all the abstractions of the various movements within improvised music piled on and around them.

Anyone interested in this will know the history of Barre and Ken and their vital importance to the instrument, so I won't recount it all here. While I have played with Ken and taken lessons from both bassists, Biggi has been an important comrade in the music for me for years. If I had to pick one insight in her playing, it would be the ability to find pitch and melodic material in the most complex timbre combinations. She might be working with pitch, but it is not imposed or expected that her fellow improvisers do the same, it is similar to the way diverse pianists like Cecil Taylor, Georg Graewe, Fred Van Hove & John Tilbury are able to work in harmonic material from the keyboard into similarly texturally complex situations without having to get under the hood of the piano.

I think this gets back to an interesting concept in improvised music guitarist Sandy Ewen calls real vs. imagined sounds: The improviser tends to play "real" sounds based on exactly what they are as opposed to an imagined ideal. Pitch comes into play as well, a pitch played by one of the basses might be a harmony with a non-tempered pitch from drum set. You end up with a multidimensional tuning system that ultimately bridges the overtone series to western tempered tuning with many stops along the way! Damon Smith, St. Louis, MO

Biggi Vinkeloe / Georg Wolf / Peeter Uuskyla - Mr Nefertiti (April 2021)

Recorded April 12, 1991 at Canastero Studio, Cologne and originally released January 1992 by Canastero Records

INGMAR GLANZELIUS 1991

Uuskyla Øgrim & Berg - Oslo Hærverk (SIMLAS 2018)

The formation of the power impro trio Uuskyla Øgrim & Berg towards the end of 2016 was merely three weeks later followed by the release of their first album Ullr. A concert at the Gothenburg club BrÖtz in October the same year was recorded, initially not for release, but when Gunnar Backman at Brakophonic Studios managed to repair the rather rudimentary recording (done with a mic on a Zoom recorder placed in front of the drum set) the concert was released on the album called LAIV. Several months later the trio was invited to play at Kafé Hærverk in Oslo. The three Scandinavians had at this point proven their ability to create music from the near-to-nothingness of the instant here and now, using their combined musical luggage and a strong sense of freedom. So here comes five "tunes" or "stretches" from that inspired evening in front of an enthusiastic Oslo audience.

Brötzmann / Uuskyla - Dead And Useless (OMLOTT 2018)

Peter Brötzmann and Peeter Uuskyla have played together in different constellations for more than fifteen years. Peter Brötzmann has been playing his own fire music since 1966. He started out with European free jazz musicians such as Han Bennink, Derek Bailey, Peter Kowald, Sven-Åke Johansson, Albert Mangelsdorff, continued with American musicians such as Sonny Sharrock, Shannon Jackson, Andrew Cyrille, Hamid Drake and Japanese musicians such as Keiji Haino, Akira Sakata, Toshinori Kondo, Takeo Moriyama. Peter Brötzmann produced his two first LPs all by himself. After that he teamed up with Jost Gebers to start the FMP-label, Free Music Production, in 1969. Brötzmann has created numerous album-covers and posters in his personal unique style, so his artwork became the FMP visual profile.

Brötzmann / Uuskyla - Red Cloud On Silver (OMLOTT 2018)

Before we start talking about the music on this album, one thing which is hardly mention is the fact that Peter Brötzmann is also a great fine artist. Recently he had an exclusive exhibition of his art in China, I also saw one in Wuppertal once. Like his saxophone/clarinet sound, his visual artistic style is also unique and has a high recognition value. The covers of all the albums reviewed here are designed by Brötzmann himself. So, when you buy a Brötzmann album you get a piece of fine arts as a bonus.

As to the music: Brötzmann  has worked quite often with Swedish drummer Peeter Uuskyla (e.g. on Dead  and Useless) since 1997 and in general the reeds/drums line-up is something he feels very comfortable with. His duos with Han Bennink, Hamid Drake, Paal Nilssen-Love and Steve Noble belong to best releases in free jazz.  Uusklya cannot quite keep up with these drummers because they are able to challenge him. Uuskyla is more the supporting kind of a drummer on this album.

My favorite passage is on side B when Brötzmann plays a particularly tender version of the “Master of  a Small House” theme, one of three or four themes he likes to integrate especially in solo and duo performances, Brötzmann once told me. Uuskyla simply drops out here, then he adds a just a few sparse few sounds, which is just perfect. And then it is him who pulls Brötzmann back to rougher waters. In  general Red Cloud on Silver is a rather  rough, torn and bumpy album.

Peeter Uuskyla - Daydreaming Nerves (OMLOTT 2018)

Swedish drummer Peeter Uuskyla performs all alone on this double-LP. The opening track ”The Dream” features two takes of drumkit mixed with one take of his piano-playing. The triptych ”Nerves I-III” presents Peeter Uuskyla´s everyday rituals as a drumkit-concerto. His primal, natural, basic, archaic music is illustrated by Johannes Brander´s cover art.

Peeter Uuskyla has played many years with legendary saxophonist Bengt Frippe Nordströms group in Sweden. He has worked and toured internationally with US-pianist Cecil Taylor, bassists Barre Phillips and Peter Kowald, Polish altosax Mikolaj Trzaska, altosax/flute-player Biggi Vinkeloe. Since last year he collaborates in trio with Biggi Vinkeloe and French trombonist Francois Lemonnier, their album ¨Space Way Messenger¨ is released by Gérard Terronès French label Futura/Marge. Peeter Uuskyla has worked, recorded and toured with Peter Brötzmann, the father of European freejazz, for the past 15+ years. LP comes in heavy gatefold cover. Limited to 300 copies on LP and 200 copies on CD.

Uuskyla / Øgrim / Berg - LAIV (SIMLAS PRODUKSJONER)

Eleven months after the debut ULLR, Uuskyla Øgrim & Berg releases LAIV

When you have struck a rich ore, you should keep on digging. That goes for gold hunters as well as musicians.

It has been only 11 months since Anders Berg and Tellef Øgrim teamed up with veteran free-jazz drummer Peeter Uuskyla to put out the debut album ULLR.

The collection of six short, hard-hitting tracks got the attention from the impro press, resulting in statements as:

– Ullr is an engaging, captivating, and often unrivalled listen.
– This is very personal music, which captivates both the brain, heart and feet.
– Uuskyla’s trio is taut and metallic, sprung, flexed and sinuous, hitting hard on the recoil.

Several months after ULLR, Tellef was contacted by BrÖtz (brotznow.se) in Gothenburg. The dry message was that the caller had taken over the booking of the club and that he had a list from the previous booking person in front of him saying that the club owed Tellef a gig.

Tellef’s answer to the club’s question about who he would like to bring along was of course that he wanted to come with Peeter Uuskyla and Anders Berg.

All three had played several times at BrÖtz, but never together as a trio.

Winding fast forward to 11 October 2017 when the three musicians got together physically, first in a pasta place at Skånegatan, later listening to records in Uuskyla’s apartment for a couple of hours, and, at last, walking on-stage at BrÖtz around 10 in the evening, following a great debut concert from the band Musikerförbundet.

Two amplifiers were moved, drums were slightly adjusted, and the floodgates could be opened.

No rehearsal or sound check took place. No discussion about what to play.

What followed on stage reflected the urge of the three musicians to finally get together and play.

The 45 minutes tour-de-force can be enjoyed in its entirety at the record LAIV, released by Simlas produksjoner at simlas.bandcamp.com (and elsewhere digitally) on November 25.

Lars Larsson / Peeter Uuskyla / Niclas Rydh / David Bäck - pensive±influx (Simlas produksjoner 2017)

My old friend Anders Berg called me on the phone one day. We talked for an hour about dogs, friends, the weather, and work. During the conversation, he mentioned a recording of mine done at the Gothenburg Museum of Art back in 2010 that I had not listened to for many years.

It was the fine acoustics of the exhibition hall, the great piano and the inspiring surrounding art pieces (by among others Francis Bacon and Andy Warhol) that had created the idea of organizing a number of concerts at the museum.

I gathered a number of guest soloists around a trio called Riverrun that I, pianist/singer David Bäck, and Peeter Uuskyla operated. During the autumn of 2010 and the spring of 2011, we played eight concerts with great musicians as trombone player Niclas Rydh, bassist Nina de Heney, sax players Jonny Wartel and Biggi Vinkeloe, trumpeter Mike Lloyd, and pianist Matti Ollikainen.

Most of the concerts were recorded, and all of them contained unique stretches of completely improvised music.

Afterward, the concert that I listened most to was the one with Rydh, Uuskyla, Bäck.

Therefore it made me very happy that Simlas would release that specific recording. I myself had similar plans back in 2011, but they never came about. - Lars Larsson 2017

Peeter Uuskyla / Tellef Øgrim / Anders Berg - Ullr (SIMLAS Produksjoner 2017)

It took my a little while to realise the background images on the album were of a radio telescope, so I returned to listening with a slightly different outlook. It is plain from the outset Peeter Uuskyla is an accomplished drummer and provides a driving force from the outset with the track “Disembark then Board”. The second, and title, track “Ullr” features some prominent bass work from Anders Berg. The third track “Lusk” is a little more laid back after the onslaught of the first two tracks, very introspective, perhaps like the operator of the radio telescope waiting to hear something significant.

“Shine Your Soul” (the only track featuring fretless guitar) is very sparse with hand claps and drumsticks on rims along with brush sounds, it progresses well, leaving you wondering where we are travelling, eventually the drums drive the whole thing to conclusion.

“By the Southward Verging Sun” is perhaps the most conventional track on the album, followed by “Wulƥuz” packed full of noises making you wonder just how far out these guys can go. Nothing appears double tracked so I think the trio would have no problem playing this album to a live audience, looking forward to hearing them soon.

A very enjoyable album and once again Tellef Øgrim & Anders Berg have their feet firmly planted in Experimental Avant-Garde Music. The addition of Peeter Uuskyla on drums has lifted their sound to an extra level. If you enjoy Scandinavian free jazz at the experimental level, this album is a real treat for you! Review – Jahloon – (January 2017)
