Rempis / Abrams / Ra + Baker - Perihelion (2016) AEROPHONIC RECORDS

This sophomore release by the working trio of Dave Rempis, Joshua Abrams, and Avreeayl Ra shows a band doubling down on the slow, patient approach to improvising that characterized their first release, 2014’s Aphelion. The trio continues to pulsate, expanding ever outwards, yet returning to a central core each time to launch their next adventure. The live sets presented on this new two-disc set document that musical expansion and contraction within the trio, but also take things a step further as the band adds enigmatic keyboardist Jim Baker to the fold as a special guest for disc two. Baker’s a logical choice to meet up with these three; his own trio with Abrams and Ra, although a sporadic grouping, dates back to the early aught’s, and he’s worked with both in countless other contexts across many years. Similarly, a multitude of collaborations between he and Rempis date back to the late 1990’s. On Perihelion, these two overlapping circles spiral seamlessly into focus to demonstrate the gravitational strength of a central core built by decades of shared history.

Uh Oh! is the latest installment in the recorded history of “The Not So Big Band”preceded by “Urban Still Life” and the follow up “Not So Big Band” Those project were co- produced by my great friend,mentor and jazz bassist Chris White (1936- 2014) who also performed and arranged music for those projects as well. We would like to dedicate this project to his memory.

The “Not So Big Band” is the brainchild of talented multi-instrumentalist Lou Caputo.It is a big band that consists of twelve musicians as opposed to the sixteen-piece or larger variety. This band is a working band, playing together for over 10 years. The band has performed for over a decade at “The Garage” in Greenwich Village, as well as performances at the “John Birks Gillespie Auditorium” located in the “Baha’i Center” in NYC , also at “Trumpets” and a regular attraction at St Peter’s Mid Day Jazz series along with concerts at Hofstra and Montclair Universities. The band has two CD’s out (Urban Still Life & Not So Big Band) that have enjoyed considerable airplay and both have been very well received. by the jazz press A third CD (UH OH!) will be released in 2016.  All of our music is currently available from most digital vendors like iTunes CDbaby and through streaming services, such as Spotify. 

Lou Caputo, a native of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, has done almost every kind of job that a musician can be asked to do. He has performed in jazz clubs in London (Ronnie Scott’s) and all over the Northeast area as well. A multi-instrumentalist (saxophones, clarinets and flutes) he has performed in show bands with the likes of Lou Rawls, Harry Connick Jr, The Temptations, The Four Tops and Shirley Bassey. He has also performed with Howard Johnson’s five Bari Saxophone group (Beartones) as well as Warren Smith’s Composers Orchestra and The Ellington and Dorsey bands. He is a member of Jack Jeffers New York Classics and has performed with The Cotton Club Orchestra Recently Lou  performed on Harry Connick's album "Your Songs"

Also featured in “The Not So Big Band” are noted musicians like percussionist Eddie Montalvo (Grammy nominee, Latin Grammy winner, Fania All-Stars), saxophonist Virginia Mayhew (Saxophone Journal Saxophonist of the Year), trumpeter John Eckart (Performed with Toshiko Akiyoshi and Lee Konitz), legendary bassist and jazz author Bill Crow (performed with Gerry Mulligan and Phil Woods), Geoffery Burke (performs with Harry Connick Jr.) Warren Smith who has performed with everyone from John Cage and Gil Evans to Barbra Streisand and all stops in between Just to cite some of the band members.

Lou Caputo, a natine of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, has been a professional musician for over thirty years. He has done almost every kind of job that a musician can be asked to do. A multi-instrumentalist (saxophones, clarinets and flutes) he has performed in show bands with the likes of Lou Rawls, Frankie Valli, Shirley Basey, Jack Jones, Bobby Short, Frankie Avalon, and a host of others. As well as the many of the famous Motown acts like the Temptations and the Four Tops. Aside from this he has performed along side of Salsa legends like Candido, Bobby Sanabria and Lou Perez. Recently he has performed on Harry Connick's latest album "Your Songs".

However, playing jazz is really closest to Lou's heart. He has had the opportunity to perform with people like trumpeter Richard Williams, pianists Duke Jordan and Jaki Byard, drummers Walter Perkins and Mousey Alexander (in his short lived big band) vocalist Joe "Be-Bop" Carroll and Dakota Staton, bassist Chris White (including a Carnegie Hall appearance). He has spent time in the Glen Miller band under the direction of Clem DeRosa as well as the Harry James big band .He has had the good fortune to record with jazz legend Dr. Billy Taylor on guitarist Ray Rivera's album Night Wind.

Lou has had the pleasure of performing in the Richie Cole octet .An other high point is having had the chance to play Birdland with the Ellington band under the direction of Paul Ellington and Jack Jeffers. Through the years Lou has appeared in many of the areas leading jazz clubs as both a leader and side man. He also played for former President Bill Clinton on the occasion of Clinton's 50th birthday.

Along the way Lou had the opportunity of studying with some of the finest teachers that the New York area had to offer. Starting with his first saxophone teacher Eddie Meyers who was the lead altoist with the great Stan Kenton Orchestra during it's heyday in the mid-forties who appears on such classics as "Eager Beaver" and "Intermission Riff" quickly followed by a long stretch of study with Frank Foster who needs no introduction to jazz fans. Perhaps his most influential teacher was the late Harvey Estrin who exposed him to the wider world of classical music and refined his approach to the clarinet and the flute in particular. Another person who helped broaden Lou's scope was the legendary Baritone saxophonist and woodwind expert Danny Bank. In the process of earning a bachelors and masters degree in Music from CUNY through the Local 802 program he had additional instruction from Albert Regni, Simeon Loring and Laurie Freedman as well.

In 2003, Lou released his first CD Urban Sill Life to a positive response from the press and jazz radio disc-jockeys around the country. In fact "Urban Still Life" was numbered among the top 100 jazz cd's in regard to air play nation wide .Currently; Lou is leading an eleven piece group he likes to refer to as the "Not So Big Band" which appears regularly at The Garage. The group features great New York musicians like Howard Johnson, Bill Crow, Jon Eckert and Virginia Mayhew to mention a few. The group just recorded their first album called "Not So Big Band". Aside from that, he can be heard with his own Quartet, as well as a member of the big bands of Howard Williams, Jack Jeffers, Joe Bataliga and the Ellington Legacy Band. Lou also plays in Howard Johnson's " Bear Tones" which is his 5 baritone sax band.

This debut release by the working trio Gunwale matches veteran Chicago saxophonist Dave Rempis up with two of the brightest up-and-coming stars from the next generation of Chicago improvisers.  While Packard is known mostly for his extensive work as a composer and percussionist within the thriving contemporary classical scene in Chicago, Wildeman has achieved notoriety for his meteoric rise from novice instrumentalist to one of the busiest players around after relocating from the Netherlands in 2011 to immerse himself in this city’s broad-shouldered sound.  With these varied backgrounds the two contribute noticeably fresh perspectives to the ever-evolving local artistic dialogue.  As a trio, their voice is stark, and clear, combining a love for driving blasts of energy with a sensitivity to the smallest details, leading to music that can be a freight train one moment, and an insectoid microcosm the next.   These intuitive abilities make sense when one considers the trio’s rare commitment to several months of weekly rehearsals before their first performance in December of 2015, a tradition they still continue when all three members are in town. So while Polynya may document a band in its early stages, its laser-beam focus leaves no doubt that these three know precisely where they’re headed.

In the summer of 2013, guitarist Joe Morris decided to thoroughly acquaint himself with the vibrant Chicago creative music scene. Although he’d worked with plenty of Chicago musicians over the years, including regular collaborations with percussionist Hamid Drake and reedist Ken Vandermark, it had been many years since Morris had spent any significant time in the city. So he undertook a series of concerts, organized by Vandermark, which placed him in a number of different contexts alongside many of his Chicago-based counterparts, including this string-heavy date at Elastic Arts. 

From the start, this ad-hoc quartet took advantage of an unusual instrumentation to produce some austere and starkly beautiful music. Each member contributes quickly interweaving lines that occasionally burst to the fore, but tend more often to wrap themselves into one other, hiding in plain sight amongst the unified whole. Cloaking their individual timbres into a sinewy mass, the result is a tight and fascinating exploration of contrapuntal improvisation.

This live recording finds the collaborative trio of Rempis, Johnston, and Ochs hard at work in the middle of their first full-on North American tour in May of 2015. Documenting a concert from the landmark venue Hallwalls in Buffalo, NY, the trio follows up on their previous release, 2014’s Spectral, having taken their unique approach to spontaneous composition to the next level through the crucible that only touring can provide. On this new recording they tackle two pieces that are significantly more extended than the ones documented on their earlier release, while still employing the same core strategy that made that recording so compelling; an ability to look far down the road in order to anticipate the larger structures that can emerge from even the slightest gesture. The trio moves with patience, and capitalizes on space, waiting for the appropriate moments to strike, always at the service of the ensemble motion. 

As this process unfolds, they employ a seemingly endless wealth of musical approaches, in which lush harmonies dissolve into breathy overtones and tea kettle whispers, which then shift into snarls and smears of sound built up thick and chunky on the canvas. At other times, all three show the ability to swoop in like so many vultures, pile onto a phrase, and then drop off individually as if falling off their own respective cliff. Meanwhile the rough and tumble timbres of Ochs’ gruff but tender tenor sound mix with Johnston’s seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of the myriad mute techniques of the early-Ellington trumpet sections, to create a pallet of unbelievable breadth. This live document truly shows a band at a creative and developmental peak.

Frekvens Frekvens presents their debut album, Vandborg.

The music is honest and earnest, connecting nordic jazz, contemporary classical music, the Danish songbook, avant-garde jazz and the free approach to music, and with an urge to seek limits. The album got its name from the town on the west coast that have offered room and atmosphere for this album to be made. The music is shaped in and by Vandborg.

The peace and clarity of the Danish West Coast’s is woven into this debut album. The compositions speak their own language, and tell stories of love, fear, hope and friendship.

We are all human, and that is what this music is about.

BIOGRAPHY BRIEF

Originally hailing from Detroit, Michigan, Tony Lustig is a dynamic saxophonist who believes strongly in warmth and groove. Taking Flight is a manifestation of those beliefs. Tony began playing violin in grade school. Learning to play the saxophone was almost an accident. Being as there wasn’t a strings program in his school, Tony needed to find an alternate means of expression. His parents offered an alto saxophone left in a dusty corner, abandoned by his older sister. As soon as the horn met his lips he felt that was it – that is what he had been looking for. He spent his childhood years playing around Detroit where he had the opportunity to play with and learn from such Detroit greats as: Marcus Belgrave and Rodney Whitaker. These experiences would lead Tony to further his quest for musical knowledge at both Michigan State University and the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City.

Upon making New York City his home, Tony has performed with some of the biggest names in the country - appearing with: Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, The Christian McBride Big Band, Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, Gerald Wilson Orchestra, Birdland Big Band, George Gee Swing Orchestra, Patti Austin Big Band, Cab Calloway Orchestra, even Gloria Gaynor, amongst others. His playing has brought him all across the United States, France, England, Japan, Colombia, Brazil, Panama, and elsewhere. Tony is a fiery character who attacks his music fiercely and passionately. He writes with the intention of stirring the soul. His melodies are memorable and his sound is moving. He strives to inspire all who listen and bring a smile to everyone he meets.

CD DESCRIPTION 

I believe in creating music that people of all musical interests and backgrounds would enjoy listening to. For this album, it was my goal to write 8 incredibly different tunes that represent what jazz music means, while still making it enjoyable for someone who has never listened to jazz before. I wanted this album to feel good above all else. The players for the band were easy to decide on because they are all incredible musicians who believe in the same thing - creating music at the highest level possible while still keeping the mainstream ear interested. I believe bridging the gap between musical styles is very possible, and this album is the first step in my journey to make that happen. I believe in inclusion, warmth, and groove. This project is the manifestation of those beliefs.
