Minino Garay - Speaking Tango (February 25, 2022 Sunnyside Records)

The practice of pairing music with poetry has a long history. Setting verse to music has become a way to amplify the emotional impact of the writers’ words. Argentinean percussionist and composer Minino Garay created a recording, Speaking Tango, that uses poetry to find the essence of the Argentinean tango in contemporary music, something that has been attempted in the genre at least since poet Horacio Ferrer collaborated with Astor Piazzolla.

Garay’s musical path has been a broad one. The jazz world has been his home for decades, but the percussionist also spent years perfecting his craft with Argentinean legends, like Mercedes Sosa and Jairo. Having lived 30 years in France, Garay expanded his musical interests into Brazilian and African music, recording with Hermeto Pascoal, Toumani Diabaté, Cheik Tidiane Seck, and Richard Bona along the way. These diverse musical interests inform the music that Garay creates.

Garay’s mother, Nury Taborda, a Córdoba based writer and teacher emphasized the importance of literature and poetry to him. Garay has continually returned to the written word for inspiration and continues to collaborate with Taborda in his music. He has also developed relationships with Argentinean poets Mutty Torezani and Adriana Cattanio. In 2000, Garay met Brooklyn born poet Dana Bryant, who introduced him to the work of The Last Poets, a highly influential African American poet collective that preached Black nationalism beginning in the late 1960s. Garay’s interest in dynamic poetry set to music continued to grow and manifest in his own creations.

The concept of Speaking Tango is to take the texts of old tango songs and adapt them to other types of music. For the past twenty years, Garay has worked alongside a number of composers and poets to create an amalgamation of music, tango lyrics, and original poetry, especially with Lalo Zanelli, whose collaboration was essential to the project. The outcome can be heard on Garay’s new album.

For the recording, Garay split the performances between two ensembles: one Argentinean and one French. Pianist Hernán Jacinto lends his expert touch to the record. Garay and Jacinto were joined in Buenos Aires by drummer Pipi Piazzolla and bassist Flavio Romero. The Parisian group included drummer Andre Ceccarelli, bassist Christophe Wallemme, and guitarist Manu Codjia. A handful of impressive guests amplify the music’s message throughout.

The wide-ranging texts cover a variety of topics, including politics, eroticism, and the realities of the world. The most prominent themes are the importance of being loved and the passage of time and its effects on the mind and body.

The recording begins with a setting of Adriana Cattanio’s poem “Ámame Online” to music by Wallemme and Garay, the text speaking of the transition of life from the physical world to the digital over a guitar heavy pulse. Zanelli and Garay reinterpret composer Cátulo Castillo’s classic tango “Desencuentro” into a 21st century lament on “Estas Desorientado.” Taborda’s exclamatory “Que Carajo” is stripped down to emphasize the text before building into an insistent refrain while Jean Marie Ecay’s guitar adds a blue tinge. The affecting vocals of Melingo provide a dramatic addition in expressing Taborda and Garay’s “Señora Doña Igualdad” over a strict tango rhythm provided by Zanelli’s pen and Leo Genovese’s piano.

Argentinean poet Baldomero Fernandez Moreno’s “En Lo Mas Profundo De Ella” finds a home over a jazzy 4/4 groove, Jacinto’s moving piano solo adding to the piece’s ennui. Poet Alex Pandev helps recite her and Taborda’s “Boca Con Boca,” which finds a home in the hazy Gerardo Jerez Le Cam and Garay composed ballad. Vocal and body percussionist David Linx provides a musical accompaniment to Taborda’s “Solo Con Un Beso.” Genovese and Garay create a haunting environment for Gustavo Adolfo Becquer’s “No Son Los Muertos,” heightened by Magic Malik’s lonely flute and voice.

The title track presents Taborda and Garay’s words over a martial beat and atmospheric guitar before launching into a dancing tempo of Lionel Suarez’s music that contains tango hints throughout. Garay and Eduardo Torezani’s “Los Chicos De Mi Barrio” is accompanied by Nicolas Genest’s music, Jacinto’s piano and Magic Malik’s flute providing an evocative backdrop for the text and a strong tango pull. The recording concludes with Taborda and Garay’s “Que Lo Parió!” with music by Zanelli, the melodic push of the words and Manu Codjia’s guitar building the tension without ever going too far.

Adding music to poetry adds an additional dimension the words’ emotional expression. Minino Garay takes his fascination with poetry and tango into another realm on his singular recording, Speaking Tango, as he pushes both mediums into uncharted territories.

Marta Sanchez - SAAM (Spanish American Art Museum) February 25, 2022 Whirlwind Recordings

Marta Sanchez’s creative voice is strikingly original – circling rhythms, elaborate forms and criss-crossing counterpoint distinguishes her sonic signature on the crowded New York contemporary music scene. Following three critically acclaimed quintet releases, the Madrid-born pianist-composer presents SAAM (Spanish American Art Museum) on Whirlwind Recordings, an album driven by emotional candour and boundary-pushing compositions.

A talented cast realises her knotty, technical writing – frontline partners Alex Lore and Roman Filiu meet Sanchez, Rashaan Carter andAllan Mednard on backline duties.

SAAM riffs on the Smithsonian American Art Museum, on an album that’s an exhibition of Sanchez’s life in musical form: “It’s made up of all the elements of society from both countries [Spain and America] that impact my life and make me who I am.” Matters internal and external are realised in musical expositions of complex feelings. The pieces took shape in lockdown, as Sanchez exchanged fortnightly composition tasks with a pen- pal. “Those compositions express all the phases I was going through at that time. I was reflecting super deeply on what’s important, and how we might give some sense to life.”

Most of the album draws on those precisely realised emotions. The colouristic, texturally driven opener ‘The Unconquerable Areas’ describes parts of herself “that are still vulnerable. These weak parts of myself; even though I’ve been dealing with them for a long time, they’re still there.” Similarly reflective is ‘Dear Worthiness’, a “sad ballad that reflects on my self worth” – it features beautifully lithe melodies, but melancholy is never far away. ‘SAAM’ cuts through that smoothness, in a jagged, Schoenberg- inspired outburst full of intense feelings and dense clusters, built around an essential pain.
A different form of pain features in ‘The Eternal Stillness’ – mournful sighs and cries emanate from the saxophones, as layered textures shift underneath. Then something very different comes along – ‘Marivi’, featuring Ambrose Akinmusire and Camila Meza, offers a warm tribute to Sanchez’s mother, who died during lockdown. “I tell her things I could never tell her,” says Sanchez of the lyrics. “I loved my mum but it was really hard to tell her the deep things.”

‘If You Could Create It’ strikes a lighter tone, with cascading torrents of tenor sax sound, before ‘The Hard Balance’ offers reflection, both musically and personally – the track is finely balanced on an intricate polyrhythm, that reflects the difficulties of maintaining a work-life balance. ‘December 11th’ is the day Sanchez’s mother died, a personal tribute featuring an extended, heartfelt piano solo.

The album concludes with ‘When Dreaming is Only’, the most complex tune on the album; insistent piano rhythms and duelling saxophones give way to a band texture that’s bustling, brimming with energy. “Sometimes I just take the vibe, compose the atmosphere, and sometimes I focus on something super specific.” Sanchez’s ability to tap into emotional expression through detailed instrumental music is without parallel – this collage of moods and feelings is testament to that.

John Morales Presents Teddy Pendergrass - The Voice - Remixed With Philly Love (February 25, 2022 BBE)

BBE Music presents a brand new album celebrating one of Philadelphia soul music’s most iconic figures, Teddy Pendergrass, remixed by pioneering producer and engineer, John Morales.

This exploration of 1970s Philly soul at its apex focuses on one of the era’s defining voices, Theodore DeReese Pendergrass. Born in Philadelphia in 1950, Pendergrass sang church music at age two, and was ordained a minister at ten years old. Having learned drums and played in local bands during his teens, at 20 he was hired as a drummer for the Blue Notes by group leader Harold Melvin. After being spotted singing along onstage, he was soon appointed lead singer, and the rest is history…

The masterful, revealing remix work of John Morales affords these classic songs improved clarity, allowing each individual player more space to be heard and modernising the recordings without ever losing sight of the original spirit. The virtuoso quality of the songwriting, production, arrangements and performances shine forth anew, and so do some of the music’s subtler qualities and nuanced, sometimes conflicted, subtexts that might have been overlooked in the most conventional view of Pendergrass in his prime.

Curated authoritatively, remixed with love and passion, John Morales’ collection revisits our relationship with Teddy’s and Gamble & Huff’s music as compellingly and immersively as when it was new. Teddy’s timeless force resides equally in his talent for portraying truthfully the joys and hurts, beliefs and doubts, blessings and challenges of our lives, and in the bravery of confronting them all with an honesty that is still utterly extraordinary.

If Music Presents You Need This: Klinkhamer Records (February 25, 2022 BBE)

IF Music owner Jean-Claude turns his attention to Dutch record shop Klinkhamer Records for the latest in his “An Introduction To…” series on BBE Music, inviting owner Michel Veenstra to compile a special selection of music to represent the store.

Located in the city of Groningen, Klinkhamer Records began in the year 2000 as an offshoot of the already-established ‘Klinkhamer Antiek en Curiosa’ shop. Having made a success of the record trade, Michel Veenstra and his brother Stephan purchased the business from founder Martin Klinkhamer in 2005. “We kept the name” says Michel “since we both loved it, and it was already well-known in our town.”

Starting out as a record dealer in the late 90s, Veenstra soon found himself a regular at the World-famous Utrecht Record Fair, and has been trading records and antiques full-time ever since. Enjoying privileged access to rare and forgotten jazz music from the Netherlands and beyond, creating his own compilation was an idea Michel had been toying with for several years, but it wasn’t until meeting Jean-Claude that plans became concrete. A list of rare, never-before reissued records was submitted to BBE and the painstaking work of licensing the music began.

Featuring mostly cuts from the late 70s and early to mid 80s, ‘An Introduction To… Klinkhamer Records’ explores some true ‘holy grail’ records, mainly from across Holland, but also roaming as far as Chicago and Italy in search of sublime jazz, blues and even gospel sounds.

“When it comes to records” says Jean-Claude, “this guy knows his onions on a whole other level; his commitment to the cause is unwavering at a time when it is getting increasingly harder to run an indie shop. So, if you find yourself in Holland for whatever reason and are a vinyl freak, do yourself the biggest favour and pay a visit to Klinkhamer Records.”

Joona Toivanen Trio - Both Only (February 25, 2022 We Jazz Records)

Joona Toivanen Trio makes their We Jazz Records debut with their new album "Both Only", out 25 Feb 2022. A landmark work for the long standing group, the album showcases a new sound for the band, trekking deep into new ideas for an acoustic jazz piano trio. Since their formation as teenagers in mid-1990's, the trio of pianist Joona Toivanen, bassist Tapani Toivanen and drummer Olavi Louhivuori (of Superposition, Ilmiliekki Quartet and Linda Fredriksson "Juniper") has developed their remarkably coherent band sound step by step, touring the world over. Nowadays, the trio is geographically split between Gothenburg, Sweden (Joona), Copenhagen, Denmark (Tapani), and Helsinki, Finland (Olavi), but the unit has never sounded so together as one, and as adventurous as on "Both Only".

"Both Only" by Joona Toivanen Trio is a cocoon, a welcoming shelter of sound that opens up naturally for the listener to inhabit. The album is moody and introspective, even dark at times, but by the time you get to the closing track, "This and This", you'll likely notice something hopeful brewing up. This is not music dealing with nostalgia or a world lost. Instead, it's a body of work with delicate dynamics, taking a minute just to listen and to look inwards to learn something, to move forward.

The first single "Enlightened" is perhaps the most traditional piece on the album, yet it flows like a vessel beyond genre, conveying a mood, a feeling and an idea. Listen to how the piano, bass and drums discuss, how the groove moves with the instruments having their clear roles but also supporting each other and documenting a musical aging process exactly as that of a quality bottle of red wine. As a song like "Direction" proves, the melody is there all the way, yet there is nothing obvious about how it's carried by the trio. Things remain surprising, fresh and moving at all times. "Except For" keeps its intensity, while nearly erupting into a full on 4-to-the-floor banger. Nearly! The key here is how the energy sustains itself, building the intensity within the music.

"Both Only" is a powerful statement from a band ready to renew itself time and again, and one willing to do it slowly, outside of the hype. This process makes the impact enduring, nuanced and lovely.

WJLP37 Joona Toivanen Trio "Both Only" is available on CD, digi and vinyl as a black vinyl edition and as a LP+7" bundle also including WJ0716 "Except For (7" Edit)" / "Keyboard Study No. 2".

I Just Came From The Moon - Ånd Ud (February 25, 2022 April Records)

Ånd Ud is the second album from Danish jazzers I Just Came from the Moon. Following years of touring both nationally and internationally, the album is a natural follow up to the debut album ‘Hoax’, but also a more general reflection on growing up and settling down.

As Frederik, bass-player and bandleader puts it: “For us, all the songs on Ånd Ud navigate a world of both deep melancholy and natural beauty. There’s a lot of saying goodbye to your carefree youth in the music, mixed with a profound serenity when realizing that what lies ahead might be even better.”

The music was recorded in a tiny vacation home on the small island of Fur in Jutland. Just the band and one technician for a couple of extended weekends. Later, IJCFTM produced and mixed most of the music themselves. “We tried a few producers - and were super fortunate to have Stephen Koszler do the mix of ‘White’ (the first single) - but in the end, it felt the most natural to finalize the rest of the music ourselves. The songs are really personal, and we were absolutely sure how we needed them to sound.” says Tobias, who plays drums and ended up mixing most of the music.

The album will be released on the legendary and newly resurrected Danish jazz-label ‘April Records’ on February 25th, 2022, with three singles leading up to the release: Brothers (5th of November 2021), Dark Latin (10th of December 2021) and White (14th of January 2022).

TriTone Asylum - THE HIDEAWAY SESSIONS (February 25, 2022 on Blue Canoe Records)

ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC JAZZ COLLECTIVE TRITONE ASYLUM
RELEASES SECOND ALBUM
THE HIDEAWAY SESSIONS
Coming February 25, 2022

Los Angeles-based jazz collective TRITONE ASYLUM’s newest album, THE HIDEAWAY SESSIONS, is set for release on February 25, 2022. Of the group’s debut album, A Life of Signs (2015), LA Jazz Scene said, "TriTone Asylum has its own musical personality… blending together electric and acoustic jazz to create pleasing and frequently stirring music." THE HIDEAWAY SESSIONS comprises an eclectic mix of original jazz compositions penned by the group’s founders, EVI player PHIL TOPPING and bassist PETER SEPSIS.

Topping, a Northern California native, was playing trumpet in the 1990s and was active in the West Coast swing revival movement of the late 90s, performing with a group called Blue Plate Special that recorded several albums and toured nationally. He moved to Southern California in 1998 where he continued to perform locally, but because of an injury to a muscle in his lip, he was forced to put aside the trumpet. He became a music educator and today is the Jazz Director at Hamilton High School, a school that boasts many renowned alumni, including jazz luminaries John Daversa and Kamasi Washington. Although he was unable to play the trumpet for several years, Topping did not stop playing music. Instead, he switched to the EVI. Then, in 2009, he was introduced to Sepsis.

Sepsis has been playing music for as long as he can remember. As a youth, he played many instruments, including piano, trombone, and guitar, but finally realized that he was most driven by rhythm and gravitated to the bass. Sepsis honed his musical chops in the San Francisco Bay area, playing Latin and Afro-Cuban rhythms, R&B, straight-ahead and progressive jazz in various groups. He moved to Los Angeles, met Topping, and soon formed a band, joined by guitarist ANDY WADDELL.

Topping and Sepsis connected through their similar taste in music, and were both influenced by Herbie Hancock, the Brecker Brothers, Eddie Harris, and especially Pat Metheny. Topping was particularly influenced by Metheny’s use of the guitar synth and became very interested in exploring the sonic possibilities of using the EVI as a lead instrument in a jazz setting.

As the music and vision of the group evolved over the years, the band’s personnel went through several changes. Drummer DAVE JOHNSTONE became a member of TriTone Asylum early on. Sepsis says, “It’s vitally important for the bass player to lock in with the drummer, and I’ve always felt a strong connection to Dave. Right from the first downbeat, I know where he’s going. Having the same bass player and drummer has allowed us to have a consistent groove despite other changes to the band’s personnel.” Another important personnel change was the addition of saxophonist IAN VO, after original sax player ALLEN MASCARI moved away. Topping originally met Vo while they were both studying music at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts).

Sometimes a band member can’t make a gig, so they contact their first call players, like pianist HENRI WILKINSON, and reed player GARY HERBIG, who, like Mascari, both appear on two tracks of THE HIDEAWAY SESSIONS. A more recent addition to the collective is the well-respected pianist MITCH FORMAN, who has become a permanent member of the group. Topping says, “The current group members are dedicated to making music together. This isn’t just a gig for us. We’re really like a family.”

Additional players who appear on THE HIDEAWAY SESSIONS are BABA SISSOKO, a percussionist from Mali who also provides vocals on one track, and percussionist BILLY HULTING.
The overarching concept for the album was to create music that is both accessible for the average listener and appealing to musicians. According to Topping, “I like music that tells a story. We don’t want to write music that’s so complicated that you need to study harmony to understand it. The music has to have heart.” Sepsis agrees, “I try to make music that reflects the sounds of the street. That’s why we move between an Afro groove, then funk, then Latin. The sounds of the street are made by people in the diverse community that is Los Angeles. If I’m not moving people, I’m not doing my job.”

The band calls its music “electro-acoustic,” blending the sounds of the EVI and electric bass with the acoustic sounds of the piano, saxophone, flute, trumpet, drums, and percussion. The opening composition, “Grasshopper,” written by Sepsis, is up-tempo with a Latin/Calypso feel. Hulting’s percussion adds to its Latin flavor. Topping’s compositional method is to first sing or hum a melody to get the kernel of a tune before playing it on the piano or EVI. “Schizophrenic” derives its title from its two different melodies, opening with a simple melody and then moving to a more angular, spacey bridge.

“The 54 Blues,” also by Topping, is not a typical blues, as it’s in 5/4 in the key of A flat, both unusual choices for a blues. The tune features Forman on organ. “The Road to Hue,” by Sepsis, is a haunting piece about a trip he took to Vietnam, where he has visited a number of times because his wife is a Professor of Physical Therapy and takes students on trips to study and exchange best practices in various countries around the world. On one of those trips, he took an excursion to the city of Hue. Along the road, he could still see the detritus of war, like bunkers, bomb craters, and evidence of agent orange.

Sepsis has also visited “Malawi.” The melody echoes a birdsong Sepsis heard on the shores of Lake Malawi. The song opens with vocals by Sissoko, who originally is from Mali and currently lives in Europe. Sissoko also plays percussion on this track. Topping composed the sweet “Ballad for Nongna” for his longtime companion of Thai descent. Topping’s composition “Simple” starts out with a simple melody played on the EVI and bass but quickly evolves into a multi-layered tune with a fusion feel. Most people can remember what it felt like when school was let out for summer vacation. Topping recreates that happy feeling on “First Days of Summer,” which he felt once again after his first grueling year as a full-time teacher.

TRITONE ASYLUM is a jazz collective with a sound all its own. Covering a range of styles, Topping’s and Sepsis’ compositions are complex and the group’s musicianship is stellar. The music has a lot of heart, making it accessible for the average listener.

THE HIDEAWAY SESSIONS is set for release on February 25, 2022 and will be available everywhere.

Luke Stewart - Works For Upright Bass and Amplifier Vol. 2 (February 25, 2022 Astral Spirits)

In Indian musical theory it is said that there are two kinds of sound, one a vibration of ether, the other a vibration of air. The vibration of ether, which cannot be perceived in the physical sense, is considered the principle of all manifestation, the basis of all substance. It corresponds to what neo-Pythagoreans called “music of the spheres”. It forms permanent numerical patterns which are the basis of the world’s existence. The kind of vibration is not caused by a physical shock as are audible sounds. It is therefore called anāhata, “unstruck”. The other kind of sound is an impermanent vibration of air, an image of the ether vibration. It is audible and always produced by a shock. It is therefore called āhata or “struck”. (Alain Daniélou, 1980)

I’d never thought about Luke Stewart in such terms until recently, but I think that scholar Alain Daniélou’s words are a great place to start. When asking our bassist-at-large about how he wanted to approach talking about this new record, he gave a little background, but ultimately wanted the music to speak for itself… and speak it does.

Works for Upright Bass and Amplifier Volume Two takes the foundation laid down by Volume One and builds a large flame out of it. A sort of regeneration. This beauty is not for the weak listener, afraid of radical change. Nor is it for a casual passerby. Over an hour, this new opus is not only a form of expression regarding where Luke has been but his willingness to examine the nature around him, specifically the relationship between electricity and wood.

Or, as I like to think of it, a few lovely compositions about a cleansing forest fire.

After Volume One, Luke advanced his techniques and recording processes through his work with several artists. Traveling and watching an array of disciplines being harnessed before his eyes led him to redeveloping his approach to training his bull fiddle to play nicely in the sandbox with a few power sources. Luke says of forming his concept that “it is the main influence for the process by which the sound is generated on this setup, but using the bass as well as the crucial element of movement. Literally moving the bass back and forth, creating an effect of movement, is necessary to make the process musical.”

Another technical observation regarding Volume Two falls someplace between the opening quote and a conversation on our mutual love for classic-era Hip-Hop production. The chopping function on the Akai MPC allows the user to take any sound and separate the impact from its sustain… or aftermath. Having tinkered on the machine for many years, I always found it fascinating to hold onto the ghosts of notes, as opposed to repeating the point of attack where they are first heard. Luke gives many examples of this through the record. Not only does his creation of the sound resonate, but the actual soul of the notes often lingers in the air like an audience listening to themselves.

A simple pluck of one, or several, strings reverberates between, at times, two amplifiers placed in varying positions around our bassist. These placements allow Luke to not only focus on his contact with the wood, but also the wood's relation to the electricity. Hand strikes a match, causing flame. Then flame touches the tree. Spreading and cleansing the area. It is ultimately a process of universal creation right before the ears. There aren’t too many spaces left where a brother can go into a place quietly and create his own universe.

Apostolos Leventopoulos - Songs For Acoustic Guitar (February 25, 2022)

With exceptional clarity of tone and a crisp, mellifluous touch, Leventopoulos reveals a refined sense of songcraft and a certain bluesy undercurrent in his phrasing, even in this intimate context. He cites the influence of Kevin Eubanks in his use of a more biting, percussive attack to vary the traditional fingerstyle approach. And thanks to those Neumann mics, we can hear Leventopoulos breathe as he shapes his melodic passages, heightening the music’s human feel.

There’s a pastoral sensibility throughout Songs for Acoustic Guitar, from the bright and flowing waltz “Wandering Thoughts” to the minor-key musings of “The River” and “Forest Breeze” and the balladic tranquility of “Sunny Afternoon.” The goal was to find “a flow that’s not self-conscious, that’s more like a real performance,” says Leventopoulos, and to that end the tracks were recorded in one or two takes with minimal if any edits. This allowed him to fully inhabit the earthy groove of “Remembrance” and navigate some of the most striking harmony of the set on the closing “Silence Within.”

The Trackers featuring Gary Husband & Alf Terje Hana - Vaudeville 8:45 (March 15, 2022)

What appears next on a resumé as weighty as Gary Husband's is always a matter of musical interest. Even with long and satisfying associations with legends like John McLaughlin and Allan Holdsworth, the talented drummer/keyboardist continually seeks different worthy and intriguing paths to explore – whatever his vehicle of expression. So when his latest project is co-led by a comparatively under-the-radar musician – in this case, Norwegian guitarist Alf Terje Hana – additional curiosity ensues. To that end, the story of their collaboration begins with both a long admiration and a “shot in the dark” from Hana:

“Discovering Gary (through Allan Holdsworth’s I.O.U. album in 1982) was the start of a lifelong, fan-like observation for me. I was always catching up on what he was up to, and what turns he presented musically.” In recent years, Hana became so enticed by video clips from Husband popping up on the internet, it spurred him to reach out. ”I so very much wanted some of his ‘outer space’ and ‘not-within-my-reach’ stuff to blend into my music that I just sent a request. That’s how it started.”

Husband recalls their first musical encounter, “My introduction to Alf and his music was via an invitation to perform some keyboards on a track called “The Elders Too” for his 2016 album, Invisible Colours. Right from the start, I found myself under the spell of his powerfully evocative music. Then, penetrating that music expressively, I felt an effortless conversational empathy with Alf’s guitar utterances within the vibe of the composition. It all just seemed to click completely with Alf and his whole approach. I very much wanted to continue exploring the intriguing musical blend we make together.”

The musical bond was formed but awaited a catalyst – one that would later arise from a very sudden and personal vacuum in Husband’s life:

“When Allan Holdsworth passed, I lost a very close and special long-term musical relationship immensely central to my ongoing development and creativity as a drummer. To ease the pain of that loss and the sheer void it brought about, I knew I had to start something new - build myself a new way to continue.”

That “new way” gradually took shape for Husband: ”I knew I wanted a three-piece; I knew I wanted guitar. I had even come up with a name while waiting for a flight in Hamburg Airport. I knew that this band - The Trackers - was going to happen.”

Husband also knew that the guitar chair was going to require a special choice. It would have to be someone unique enough to stand apart from the imposing shadows cast by his prior guitar colleagues.
“I became really into the idea of casting Alf to occupy the guitarist role. He sounded nothing like Allan or John McLaughlin, which was important to me. Plus his way and trajectory are very different from mine. He’s unlike any musician I’ve ever worked with actually. In a way, we are quite unlikely musical bedfellows but I knew that the new avenues presented by such a great artist – one that occupies worlds quite different from mine – would stretch me and demand new approaches from me.”

Hana was thrilled and a little taken aback: “To be asked to join The Trackers was unreal for me and came out of the blue. It made me proud, happy, and also close to a nervous breakdown! I almost felt that I didn’t have shoes that size! Nevertheless, I immediately started composing music for this outfit.”

Hana’s initial trepidation seems somewhat amusing as it’s apparent fairly immediately on Vaudeville 8:45 that he’s a compelling co-conspirator and provocateur to Husband. And while he may exhibit trace connections to guitarists as disparate as Beck, Torn, Aarset and Rypdal, they’re culled by Hana into a musical avatar that’s as singular as it is exciting, as Husband confirms:

“In his voice, there’s overdriven rock blended with the unfamiliar and the abstract. He has a unique cry that is very particular to him. Alf’s also got a certain theatre, a certain ‘Jean Cocteau’ inherent in what he creates and I adore these aspects! He has his own sense of dramatically interesting textures and timing - and what he chooses to leave out too. There’s nothing superfluous. For me, it’s like the spirit of Miles Davis is alive and well right here in 2022. Alf’s a real artist.”

With the duo’s program incorporating funk, rock, avant-garde and abstract classical elements, allusions to jazz and fusion, and strong aspects of mood and atmosphere, Husband called upon an extraordinary roster of bassists to complete the project, casting them accordingly. “It required some introspection but the pieces themselves strongly dictated who I might ask for each tune. I’m fortunate to have had first-hand experience with all of these gentlemen throughout my life, and to call them all friends.”

“Jimmy Johnson took a couple of Alf’s pieces to the stratosphere, in a way only he can. Étienne MBappé blessed “Two Foxes” with his colossal groove, as I knew he would. Jimmy Haslip provided his inimitable brand of interplay and propulsion on “The Middle Distance”, Guy Pratt brought the perfect attitude and drive to “Living Time” (the riff of jazz composer George Russell), and Kevin Scott gave lovely movement and feeling throughout two of my productions on the album. Mark King of course (on “Wide Awake Running”) was perfection and provided everything that machine-like groove called out for. Plus I was really keen to use Alf’s excellent bassist (from his own band Athana) Øyvind Grong for two selections, on which he plays beautifully & elegantly. The attention to detail and spirit they all brought was just perfect.”

While these key bass contributions substantially elevate the proceedings, they also further highlight what an exceedingly rare vein of collaborational gold Husband and Hana have struck. Together they have created a uniquely broad and stylized sonic canvas on Vaudeville 8:45 – one that elicits bold strokes and fresh colors from all involved. For Hana, it’s a deserved entrée to a larger audience. For Husband, it's an unquestionably exciting addition to an already impressive musical CV. More importantly, The Trackers represents exactly what he had been searching for – a new way indeed. One can hope that it’s just the beginning.

Thomas Milovac Sextet - Sun Ray (February 2022 Cosmo Sonic Collective)

Composer Ben Shorstein wrote about “Sun Ray”:

“Thomas Milovac is an alchemist. I’m fascinated by his masterful combination of elements - textures, instrumentation, composition, structure, free improvisation, structured improvisation, dissonance, harmony, dynamics, space. He uses these aural elements as a visual artist uses the physical to create a unified and harmonious whole; each piece is greater than the sum of its parts. Milovac’s music lives within this sublime contrast of aspects. With this album, I feel pulled in different directions, my expectations continuously thwarted (in a good way). This wouldn’t be possible without the top-class musicians on the album. The absence of piano adds much, as the freed up space allows for greater sonic exploration. The title track, Sun Ray, is a great swingin’ tune, and I particularly enjoy the tasty trumpet solo, punctuated by the bass and drums. Still Moments is emotional wizardry, with beautiful ensemble textures especially from the horns and bowed bass. Quasar is a transcendent, hypnotic exploration of texture and extended techniques of the bass, accompanied by bells. Black Mask is a lovely piece with unique structure, reminiscent of a Duke Ellington ballad, with a Milovacian twist. As an album, this is thoughtfully designed, balanced, and artfully executed creative music.”

"Sun Ray" is bassist and composer Thomas Milovac's debut studio album. Flying through the musical cosmos, the Thomas Milovac Sextet visits the many worlds of the composer's mind. Varying styles, textural landscapes, driving swing, and improvisational communions bring the listener in on this sonic odyssey. We implore you to strap in for the ride.
