Roller Trio - New Devices (EDITION RECORDS June 22, 2018)

New Devices is the 3rd album from Leeds based trio and Mercury Prize nominees Roller Trio. A unique trio, their sound is modern and gritty, pushing sonic boundaries to their limits. Switching the feel of a tune in a heartbeat from edgy improv to anthemic power riffs to reverb-swamped note storms, Roller Trio are powerful and progressive. For this album, the line-up includes Chris Sharkey, a guitarist at the cutting-edge of contemporary guitar improv, alongside James Mainwaring, saxophone & electronics and Luke Reddin-Williams, drums. Their mix of high octane technicality and deceptively catchy tunes has transcended their Jazz heritage, bringing them acclaim from fans and critics alike. Their eponymous debut album was nominated for the 2012 Mercury Prize and the band were also nominated for MOBO's Best Jazz Act that same year.

The new album’s theme is as relevant as it could be in today’s social climate. New Devices reflects people’s confused relationship with technology and the public participation in self-surveillance. As James explains: ‘We couldn’t have made this album without technology, the devices used in music making and the online communication, yet we’re concerned about the future and the impact social media will have on the next generation - Do we really have a grip on our relationship with technology?’. 

The music is dark, gritty and urban - menacing bass lines underpinned by squalling improvising from guitar and sax attaining ultimately uplifting fulfilment. Built from sound fragments of Leeds nightlife formed and reformed through the musical intelligence and instrumental brilliance of the three musicians it’s an exhilarating, rollicking ride - an exercise in freeform free fall, a three for all free-for-all, moderated by the musical logic and compositional rigour of the pieces.

Tim Garland - Weather Walker (EDITION RECORDS June 8, 2018)

Weather Walker, the monumental, atmospheric and unfailingly melodic new orchestral album from one of Europe’s most prolific composers and instrumentalists, Tim Garland, takes its inspiration from The Lake District in the North West of England. Tim is a musician with equal talent and scope both as a performer and composer and Weather Walker showcases his sheer brilliance and ambition, confirming his reputation as one of contemporary music's most forward-thinking figures. Recorded at the iconic Abbey Road Studio 1 with a 43 piece string section, this epic production contains some of his best large ensemble writing. Uniting his regular collaborators, pianist Rebello and bassist Gabolev, with a 35 piece string orchestra, Weather Walker is also a first-time collaboration with the exciting and progressive German pianist Pablo Held, a musician with an equally strong sense of harmony and freedom of expression. 

For Weather Walker, the inspiration came from the Lake District, as Tim explains: ‘It was at the Lakes that I first had the sensation that it is us, human beings, that nature permits to live here, and not us permitting and cultivating nature where we choose to allow it! I’ve felt this in lots of places around the globe since then, but because this is my home country and early memories linger, The Lakes, which has a melancholy beauty even throughout the cold grey months, remains magical. Given the inspiring visual setting of this music, it is naturally cinematic’.

Julian Argüelles - Tonadas (EDITION RECORDS July 20, 2018)

European Jazz at its finest blending Spanish roots, Nordic space and sound with one of the brightest and most talented British bands around. 

Tonadas (simply meaning Tunes) is the lyrical and vibrant new quartet album from saxophonist Julian Argüelles. Drawing on his Spanish roots Argüelles has produced a gem - a beautifully warm, harmonically rich and melodic album, abundant with an elegant tone and absorbing colour.

Tonadas has everything you’d want and expect from a contemporary Jazz album, yet it surprises on another level. With shifting turns of phrase and effortlessly flowing band interplay, Argüelles’ growing status as a master composer, bandleader and creator are clear. This music is profoundly joyful and masterfully produced.

Ghost-Note - Swagism (ROPEADOPE RECORDS 2018)

We are eternally grateful for the creative energy that Robert Sput Searight puts into the world, and we are honored by his presence here at Ropeadope and with his label RSVP Records. yet it is his collaborative work with Percussionist Nate Werth that intrigues us beyond all. Ghost-Note is their project together, and it begins with two drummers finding a rhythm on stage and in life. Unique in history, Ghost-Note builds from this core with no specific destination, and expands outward - adding melody and accents as it adds serious players who bring new flavor to the band. It is a fascinating process, and it is moving forward with accelerating power.

What does that mean? It means that the next Ghost-Note record is a powerhouse of musical exploration that eclipses their debut, with a core band of  Anthony ‘AJ’ Brown, Sylvester Uzoma Onyejiaka II (Sly 5th Ave), Dywane “MonoNeon” Thomas Jr, Jonathan Mones, Michael Jelani Brooks, and Xavier Taplin - and a dizzying array of guests including Kamasi Washington, Karl Denson, Raja Kassis, Prudence the Auset Sneed, Brandon ‘Taz’ Neiderauer, Nigel Hall, Bob Lanzetti, Alvin Ford Jr, Jay Jennings, Nick Werth, Bobby Ray Sparks, Phil Lassiter, and Michael Palmer. "El miércoles 13 de Junio arranca la participación del cuarteto “ONE TWO FREE FALL” en el III Circuito “Andajazz”. Granada, Huelva, Sevilla, Algeciras, Cadiz y Almería acogen los conciertos de presentación del disco de debut que meses atrás han publicado a través del sello discográfico independiente Underpool, con sede en Barcelona y centrado en jazz y músicas improvisadas.

“Andajazz” es el Circuito de Asociaciones de Jazz de Andalucía creado y promovido por la Federación Andajazz. ONE TWO FREE FALL es la nueva propuesta en formación de cuarteto del trompetista granadino JULIÁN SANCHEZ, uno de los referentes jazzísticos más sólidos de la escena jazz del sur de Europa, en coliderazgo con la violinista malagueña LUZ PRADO, el contrabajista catalán JOAN MASANA y el baterista extremeño JAVIER DEL BARCO. Una banda en pleno desarrollo que aúna la frescura y madurez artística propias a un proyecto que encuentra en la improvisación y las estéticas free su principal vehículo de expresión. Ornette Coleman, Eric Doplhy, Sun Ra, Roland Kirk y tantos otros referentes del Free, el Avant Garde y la Improvisación Libre han servido como punto de partida a un cuarteto que firma música original y en continua evolución forjada sobre escenarios de Festivales de Jazz de Cádiz y Málaga y salas de Portugal y Extremadura. One Two Free Fall

One Two Free Fall es una nueva propuesta del trompetista Julián Sánchez en coliderazgo con la violinista Luz Prado, el contrabajista Joan Masana y el baterista Javier del Barco. Una formación que aúna la frescura y madurez artística propias a un proyecto que encuentra en la improvisación y la estética del free jazz su principal vehículo de expresión. Ornette Coleman, Eric Doplhy, Sun Ra, Roland Kirk y tantos otros referentes del avant-garde y la improvisación libre han servido como punto de partida a un cuarteto que firma música original y que se no se establece, sino que encuentra en la incertidumbre su propia naturaleza. 

El sonido conjunto de trompeta y violín ofrecen una amplia y atractiva sonoridad que traslada al oyente al ámbito de la música contemporánea. Junto a ello y en equilibrio estético, contrabajo y batería provocan que florezcan la danza y el baile en sus melodías. Una propuesta protagonizada por cuatro músicos con trayectoria, madurez y experiencia; una novedosa unión que busca un espacio común donde las respuestas se construyen en comunión con el público, con el momento, a través de ellos.

Dal 16 al 30 giugno - Voci dal Mondo a Corigliano d'Otranto, Lecce e Fasano (Xenia Performing Arts)

Dal 16 al 30 giugno Xenia performing arts propone a Corigliano d'Otranto, Fasano e Lecce, una rassegna culturale tra musica e incontri. Tra gli ospiti il progetto Malagasy Connection (Nabil Bey, Gianni Lenoci, Pasquale Gadaleta, Tsanta Randriamihajasoa e Josia Rakotondravohitra), il quartetto guidato da Cesare Dell'Anna e Talla, il polistrumentista pugliese Giovannangelo de Gennaro, la  cantante e compositrice tunisina, un’icona della Primavera Araba, Emel Mathlouthi, il videomaker Dario Brandi e  lo scrittore ed editore Papa "Amadou" Ngay Faye. Il progetto è finanziato dal "Programma straordinario annuale in materia di spettacolo" della Regione Puglia.

I progetti musicali Malagasy Connection (Nabil Bey, Gianni Lenoci, Pasquale Gadaleta, Tsanta Randriamihajasoa e Josia Rakotondravohitra) e Cesare Dell'Anna e Talla, il polistrumentista pugliese Giovannangelo de Gennaro, la  cantante e compositrice tunisina, un’icona della Primavera Araba, Emel Mathlouthi, il videomaker Dario Brandi e lo scrittore ed editore Papa "Amadou" Ngay Faye sono gli ospiti di Voci dal Mondo, rassegna a cura di Xenia performing arts - finanziata dal "Programma straordinario annuale in materia di spettacolo" della Regione Puglia - che dal 16 al 30 giugno proporrà quattro concerti a Corigliano d'Otranto (sabato 16 e domenica 17 giugno) e Fasano (venerdì 29 e sabato 30 giugno) e un incontro a Lecce (mercoledì 20 giugno). Un viaggio nel cuore della Puglia, crocevia al centro del Mediterraneo dove è possibile sfidare l’idea che le differenze tra Occidente e Oriente comportino necessariamente ostilità, luogo dove favorire scambi ed intrecci tra i popoli che si affacciano sul "mare di mezzo" e tra quelli che in qualche modo lo attraversano. 

La rassegna prenderà il via nel Castello Volante di Corigliano d'Otranto, in provincia di Lecce, con due progetti che fondono le sonorità jazz con quelle arabe, afro e balcan. Sabato 16 giugno (ore 21 - ingresso 5 euro con degustazione) si parte con Malagasy Connection, il nuovo progetto del cantautore Nabil Bey, leader e cantante dei Radiodervish, e del pianista e compositore Gianni Lenoci, affiancati dal contrabbassista Pasquale Gadaleta, che incontreranno nuovamente Tsanta Randriamihajasoa (tromba, valiha) e Josia Rakotondravohitra (batteria e percussioni), due dei più importanti musicisti del Madagascar. Dopo il debutto dello scorso aprile al Nosy Be Jazz Festival (Madagascar), Malagasy Connection continua a intrecciare e esplorare storie, culture, universi e repertori in un mix esplosivo e poetico, in cui le radici del jazz incontrano la grande tradizione melodica araba attraverso le inquietudini e i rituali ancestrali delle sonorità africane. Domenica 17 giugno saranno di scena Cesare Dell'Anna e Talla con un live che parte dal Salento e dal Senegal per incontrare la world music, le melodie balcaniche e quelle del progressive jazz.

Il trombettista salentino e il cantante senegalese saranno accompagnati da Mauro Tre (piano, farfisa, synth) e Gino Semeraro (chitarra elettrica). Un progetto che nasce dalla cultura dell’accoglienza e dell'incontro, dall’interrelazione con i migranti che hanno avuto la fortuna di trovare sulle spiagge del Salento la risposta ai loro sogni, la valorizzazione delle loro capacità artistiche e culturali e la possibilità di esprimersi liberamente nella terra che li ospita. Il quartetto condurrà il pubblico dagli spazi infiniti del deserto fino alle pianure del Salento, dalle atmosfere metropolitane alle magie musicali che abbracciano le terre che si affacciano sul Mediterraneo creando nuove commistioni e sonorità.

Mercoledì 20 giugno (ore 20 - ingresso libero) il Fondo Verri di Lecce ospiterà la presentazione e proiezione del documentario "Il venditore di libri" del videomaker salentino Dario Brandi. Senegal, Francia, Milano e infine Lecce: attraverso questo lungo viaggio, Papa Ngay Faye da tutti conosciuto come Amadou, riscopre gli insegnamenti del padre. Arrivato nel Salento trova l’amore e una nuova famiglia e da semplice venditore di libri si trasforma in scrittore ed editore. 

La rassegna si concluderà nella residenza moresca del Minareto di Fasano, in provincia di Brindisi. Venerdì 29 giugno (ore 21 - ingresso 5 euro) spazio alla presentazione di Via - Immagini sonore di un Viandante, primo lavoro solista del musicista pugliese Giovannangelo De Gennaro (voce, viella, cornamusa, ciaramella, flauto traversiere e organistrum) distribuito dalla Radici Music Records di Firenze. "Un disco nudo che racconta quello che sono, corpo e anima in un vestito che muta nel tempo", scrive De Gennaro, "l'essenza di una vita presente che vuole dissetarsi per non seccare e morire per sempre. Un viaggio musicale pieno d'incontri, conoscenza, silenzi e dialogo". Musica medievale, etnica, sperimentale e contemporanea sono gli elementi di questo album, le cui composizioni melodiche sono sovraincise con copie di strumenti medievali, polifonie e voci in dialogo tra assonanze e dissonanze, monodie suonate ripetutamente dagli stessi strumenti. Sonorità che rievocano ricordi e immagini dei "cammini" dell'autore, che ha scelto il muoversi a piedi come stile di vita, pratica che ha adottato negli ultimi diciotto anni e che lo pone in contatto con la natura, con se stesso e con la sua musica. 

Sabato 30 giugno (ore 21 - ingresso 12 euro) ultimo appuntamento di Voci dal mondo con il concerto di Emel Mathlouthi, cantante e compositrice tunisina che torna in Italia con il suo secondo album "Ensen", uscito nel 2017 per Partisan Records. Nata e cresciuta a Tunisi, ben presto le sue canzoni vengono censurate in tutto il paese per effetto della dittatura culturale e politica. Così, nel 2007, Emel parte alla volta di Parigi dove esplode il suo talento compositivo. Nel 2008 canta Kelmti Horra (La mia parola è libera) durante la Rivolta dei Gelsomini, diventando un’icona della Primavera Araba, di cui Klemti horra diventa ben presto l’inno. Oggi Emel vive a New York, dove continua a far valere la sua voce in nome della verità. "Ensen" è un disco che attraversa i confini della musica, un universo sonoro che spazia dai ritmi e dagli strumenti tradizionali del Nord Africa alle sonorità elettroniche fino alle avanguardie d’impronta nordeuropea. Un album sui generis in cui l'artista rivisita e fa sua la ricca tradizione pop del Maghreb, cantando la maggior dei suoi brani rigorosamente in arabo e utilizzando la voce come strumento per entrare in connessione con il pubblico di tutto il mondo.

Mike Clark & Delbert Bump - Retro Report (ROPEADOPE RECORDS 2018)

His father was a railroad man and Mike picked up a great understanding of different musical styles around the country while riding the rails. From Herbie Hancock's Headhunters to a long list of the greats, Mike Clark shows how it's done both on the drums and as a Jazzman. Hip, positive, and adventurous at 70, Mike met up with his longtime friend Delbert Bump and together they tracked an album of Hammond based grooves - Retro Report, bringing in young Elias Lucero to rip it up on guitar with some horn touches from Vince Denham and Rob Dixon. This is your Father's Jazz, your Sister's Jazz, your long lost Uncle Benny's Jazz, and your Grandson's Jazz. That is to say it crosses the span of time with a master's flick of the wrist.
