Miles Okazaki - Trickster (PI RECORDINGS 2017)

Trickster is guitarist Miles Okazaki’s first album in five years and his much anticipated debut on Pi Recordings, having been featured on six other releases in the label’s catalog in groups led by Steve Coleman, Jonathan Finlayson, and Dan Weiss, along with associations with other Pi artists such as Matt Mitchell, Jen Shyu, and Amir ElSaffar. Perhaps best-known as a member of Steve Coleman and Five Elements, with whom he has played for the last eight years, Okazaki has also built a solid reputation for himself as one of the most adventurous composers and guitarists on the current scene. The New York Times says of Okazaki, “Even by the standard of his hyper-literate post-bop peer group, Mr. Okazaki is an unusually calculating musical thinker,” and as a guitarist, “exceedingly skilled with a head for rhythmic convolution.”

Originally from Port Townsend, Washington, Okazaki began playing classical guitar at age six, and was playing regular gigs on electric guitar by age fourteen. He moved to New York after graduating from Harvard University (he also holds degrees from Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School) to pursue a career in music. His teacher on guitar at the time was Rodney Jones, who got Okazaki’s career in motion by recommending him for early gigs with Stanley Turrentine, Lenny Pickett, Regina Carter, and studio session work. He has received many awards as a guitarist including placing second in the 2005 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. Okazaki spent four years on the road with vocalist Jane Monheit and became known as an expert vocal accompanist, but he also started to develop an experimental streak in his own music. His first album as a leader, Mirror (2006), received a “Critics Pick” in the New York Times, who called it “a work of sustained collectivity as well as deep intricacy.” His second album, Generations (2009), was described by pianist Vijay Iyer in Artforum as “the sonic equivalent of Escher or Borges, but with real emotional heft.” His next album, Figurations, was selected as one of the New York Times top ten albums of 2012, described by Ben Ratliff as “slowly evolving puzzles of brilliant jazz logic.”

Okazaki subsequently entered a period of focused guitar study, which resulted in the book Fundamentals of Guitar, published by Mel Bay in 2015. When he began to compose again, he went at it from a fresh perspective, placing greater emphasis on guitar playing and improvisation. Steve Coleman describes Okazaki’s development during this period: Miles has always been a very intense cat. Ive always been impressed with his perseverance and how deep he gets into his research. When he first came to me years ago, all he wanted to talk about was conceptual stuff, but now that hes internalized it, it just comes out organically. You can really hear that in his playing now. For his new music, Okazaki decided to use Anthony Tidd on bass and Sean Rickman on drums, the long-running rhythmic engine and his bandmates in Steve Coleman and Five Elements, with whom he has performed with hundreds of times. Its a fascinating opportunity to hear their unique chemistry — the quicksilver ability to process and internalize complex information, transform musical material

Through improvisation, and do it all while staying “in the pocket” — in a wholly different context. Both Tidd and Rickman have deep roots in funk, R&B, and hip hop, and it is fascinating to hear Okazaki’s music through the filter of these musical sensibilities. Okazaki’s next call went to pianist Craig Taborn, perhaps the most widely-admired pianist on the cutting-edge of jazz, who brings a supremely inventive musical sense to everything he plays. Together they have created a breakthrough statement by Okazaki, a unified book of compositions that grooves from beginning to end.

Fukumi - Moon in Paris (2017)

Moon in Paris, recorded in New York – as Japanese singer Fukumi works with some of that city's top jazz talents – including Eric Alexander on tenor sax, Behn Gillece on vibes, David Hazeltine on piano, John Webber on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums!

The instrumental core of the album is wonderful – very much in the Alexander/Hazletine camp – and Fukumi's a hell of a singer, too – one who can put forth the lyrics at one point, then scat wordlessly with a very melodic approach – a style that sounds especially nice next to the piano and vibes! Production is wonderful – lean, clean, and just the right mode to capture the interplay between the singer and the band – and all arrangements are by Hazeltine, who also plays a bit of Fender Rhodes. Titles include Fukumi's original "Moon In Paris" – plus nice takes on "The Windmills Of Your Mind", "What Are You Doing For The Rest Of Your Life", "Devil May Care", "Once Upon A Summertime", "Sunny", "I Will Wait For You", "Yesterday When I Was Young", and "This Girl's In Love With You".

Martin Speake & Faith Brackenbury - Zephyr (2017)

Coming from different musical backgrounds the Martin Speake and Faith Brackenbury duo bring a mix of folk, jazz, classical, indian, rock and much more to create a soundworld of at times beauty and others more raw and driving energy.

An unusual instrumental pairing of Speake's alto sax and violin/viola, played by Faith Brackenbury, this album is bursting with freely improvised lines weaving in and out of melody, harmony, discord and with influences of many varied genres of music.

The strings often rhythmically supporting the alto's lyrical lines with double stopping or, as on the title track Zephyr, both instruments playing intimately, haltingly, softly drawing the listener in.

The album is framed by two structured pieces, the first O Pastor Animarum by Hildegaard von Bingen, 11th century composer, naturalist, writer and mystic that the duo then make their own. Then to finish Faith plays viola and sings on an improvised version of the traditional folk song Down By the Salley Gardens.

These particular tracks make this duo far more than a free improv recording. Zephyr is an album that will give the listener a flowing experience of these two musicians' spontaneous creativity and a taste of complexity and simplicity in one.

Martin Speake: Duos for Trio - The Music of Béla Bartók (2017)

Alto saxophonist Martin Speake, cellist Matthew Forbes and percussionist Phelan Burgoyne are releasing their first album entitled 'Duos for Trio', which uses eleven compositions by Hungarian composer Bela Bartok (1881-1945) as templates for new improvised compositions.

The original pieces were written between 1930 and 1931 and are among the 44 duets for two violins - short sketch-like pieces (none of which last longer than a couple of minutes each) - that often use folk themes from around Eastern Europe, which the composer himself collected.

The trio have chosen eleven of these, and have used them as the root material for new improvisations, while retaining the essence of Bartok's creative imagination.

The Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra (with Jon Batiste & Wynton Marsalis) - The Music of John Lewis (BLUE ENGINE RECORDS 2017)

Few captured the sleek, swinging sophistication of jazz better than pianist, composer, and bandleader John Lewis, who had a long, deep, personal relationship with Jazz at Lincoln Center. “He used to always call our program a miracle,” says Wynton Marsalis. “He used to always say, ‘Keep that miracle going.’”

In 2013, when the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis set out to honor the legacy of the Modern Jazz Quartet’s maestro, they teamed up with New Orleans’ own Jon Batiste. The bandleader of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and a prodigious pianist in his own right, Batiste joined the JLCO to tackle some of Lewis’s most iconic tunes during a sold-out concert in Rose Theater, the House of Swing.

From the blistering bebop of “Two Bass Hit” to the down-home blues of “2 Degrees East, 3 Degrees West”—from small group configurations to the big band might of the full JLCO—The Music of John Lewis captures the elegance and soulfulness of Lewis’s daring compositions. The record also includes a four-movement suite pulled from the Modern Jazz Quartet’s classic recording, The Comedy.

“The depth of his belief makes his music timeless,” Batiste says of Lewis. “For artists, what remains impactful and meaningful in one’s art depends on the accuracy and intensity of your insights. Mr. Lewis's music is still with us, and it is an honor to place my artistry in the tradition of serving it. So put on this record, listen with your eyes closed, and engage your imagination.”

Brothers in Groove - B.I.G. (ANGAPP 2017)

The album B.I.G. is the sum of the life experiences of four musicians with a common denominator: the Black Music.

It is nine tracks mainly instrumental in which the four lay bare their own worlds, blending them into a better one… sublimated and sublimating the listener.

So starting from the black fingers of Howard supported by the pulse of Boccuzzi, enhanced by sound carpets Balice and super bit Celi, switching from influences of Robert Glasper to Snarky Puppy, from Bootsy Collins to Christian Scott and the powerful Roy Hargrove RH Factor, all overseen by King Davis.

In the song “Hope in a boat” dedicated to all migrants crossing the sea in a boat putting all the hopes and dreams of a better life, we find the pathos and ancestral memory of Fela Kuti legacies.
Not missing two songs sung: Never Alone pure Funk with the voice of Liliana Marzo and Scream Harder a song pop soul sung by drummer Walter Celi with the choirs of Paola Caterina.

Precious collaboration on disc of Paolo Pace on sax and flute, Vito Scavo Trombone and effects and Martha Montelongo Garcia from Mexico City with his violin on Funk Shui.

Have a nice trip and StayBig!
