Socrates Garcia Latin Jazz Orchestra - Back Home (2016)

Label: Mama Records

Back Home, the debut recording by composer / arranger / musicologist Socrates Garcia's Latin Jazz Orchestra, combines the best of two worlds: ardent Latin jazz that never forswears its roots, and emphatic American-designed big-band swing that provides a solid framework for Garcia's picturesque Latin / American excursions. Garcia, who was born in the Dominican Republic, is director of Music Technology at the University of Northern Colorado, and Back Home, it seems, represents more a state of mind than any physical locale, even though there are brief stops at "Calle el Conde" and "From Across the Street" in Garcia's native land, the last a part of the three-movement "Dominican Suite for Jazz Orchestra."

Garcia's compositions (he wrote and arranged every number on the album) are lively and effervescent, easily bridging whatever gap, real or imagined, that may exist between American jazz and the music of his homeland. While Latin rhythms predominate, the more well-known samba, bossa and tango are supplanted by Dominican cadences such as the bachata and merengue. As for Garcia's sidemen, most of whom call Colorado home, their mastery of his blueprint is such that they might easily be misread as emigres from Garcia's birthplace. An exception is the all-Dominican rhythm section, comprised of pianist Manuel Tejada, bassist Pengbian Sang and drummer Helen De La Rosa (with an assist from percussionists Felix "Abuelo" Garcia, Rafael Almengod, Josue Reynoso and Otoniel Nicolas). Guitarist Steve Kovalchek is added on "Celebration of the Butterflies," and Garcia plays guitar on "Back Home."

The album's centerpiece and inspiration is the colorful "Dominican Suite," which opens with a sharply drawn "Tribute to Tavito" (identified by Garcia as saxophonist Tavito Vasquez, known as "the Charlie Parker of the Caribbean"). As SuperSax did for Parker, Garcia has embedded one of Vasquez's solos as part of the composition. The second movement, "Bachata for Two," akin to a Latin waltz, was written for Garcia's wife, Wanda, while the third, "From Across the Street," recalls folk music—called Palos or Atabales—performed by a woman who lived across the street from Garcia's home in the Dominican Republic and is the only track on the album with vocals (by a suitably well-spoken quartet). The opening number, "Vantage Point," is a bracing merengue whose charming melody and addictive rhythms give way to canny solos by Tejada and baritone saxophonist Ryan Middagh. The vivacious "Calle el Conde a Las 8:00," whose bright solos are by soprano Wil Swindler and trumpeter Jordan Skomal, precedes the earnest "Celebration of the Butterflies," Garcia's homage to the three Mirabel sisters who were assassinated by dictator Rafael Trujillo's government for their opposition to his regime. Tenor Kenyon Brenner is showcased on "Butterflies," as he is on "Back Home." Another splendid soloist, trumpeter Brad Goode, is front and center on "Bachata for Two" and shares the spotlight with Tejada on "Homage to Tavito."

Not only is Back Home a near-perfect blend of Dominican and American music, it stands tall on its own as a superlative example of big-band jazz at its best. Well done, Socrates.

Michael Spiro/Wayne Wallace La Orquesta Sinfonietta - Canto América (2016)

Label: Patois Records

The historical evolution of the Caribbean Basin and specifically the Greater Antilles, has been over five hundred years in the making. The triangular connections between Europe, Africa, and the New World with its ensuing social and economic constraints, established the conditions for an innovative culture in the region. The enculturation process led to the creolization of the music and the creation of hybrid religions as Santeria in Cuba, and Voudou in what was then Hispaniola (Saint-Domingue), adding an intriguing dimension to musical development. In an ambitious and panoramic endeavor, percussionist Michael Spiro, and trombonist Wayne Wallace, with supplemented roles as arrangers and producers, formed La Orquesta Sinfonietta, and present Canto América an engaging narrative of the Afro-Caribbean experience on a grand scale.

With this project encompassing such a broad scope, Spiro and Wallace decided to prepare themselves with a full string orchestra, wide-ranging horn section, and an array of vocalists, to augment their dependable Latin Jazz Quintet. Having an ample supply of over fifty assorted instruments and voices at their disposal, they were able to pick and choose from individual soloists to string quartets and big band scenarios, all enhanced by Spiro's propelling percussion so dominant in this production.

The preamble "Canto America (Amanecer/Dawn)" offers an opus to Osain, the Yoruba god of the forest, as female voices blend with strings for a soft approach, as when the Spanish caravels first arrived into the tranquil islands, which would soon be disrupted. There is a definite Afro-Cuban concentration evident throughout, and "La Propaganda De Hoy," is a nod to Los Van Van, the innovative Cuban ensemble which reenergized the dance craze on the island with its funk and timba variations. The strings are positioned in the forefront to engage with the percussion and brass, as the repetitious vocal chorus encourages the dancers.  Read more...

Marcello Pellitteri - Acceptance (2016)

Label: Marpel Music
Source: Cdbaby

A collection of songs with elements of jazz, rock, funk, soul and classical music. Featuring some of the best musicians in NYC as well as the amazing Italian string orchestra, Orchestra Giovanile Mediterranea.
“A heartfelt, touching CD full of thought provoking themes and with high level musicianship throughout. It is a creative, prolific, soulful offering. … Acceptance is truly a gift!” (Terri Lyne Carrington)

"Very soulful, groovy, introspective and hopeful at the same time" (Antonio Sanchez)

Award winning drummer Marcello Pellitteri has produced this album dedicated to the memory of his daughter, Veronica Pellitteri (1991-2014). Marcello says about his daughter: "She has taught me that acceptance of unfortunate life experiences is the way to overcome their consequences. Acceptance has transformed my deepest sorrow into this music."
Marcello wrote all the music in this CD except for an instrumental cover of Stay, a song by Mikky Ekko and Justin Parker made famous by Rhianna.

This recording, co-produced by the fantastic Alain Mallet (Sting-Paul Simon), features an incredible line up of players from NYC (guitarists David Gilmore and Yotam Silberstein, bassist François Moutin, vocalist Philip Hamilton and organist Gary Versace), as well as the amazing ORCHESTRA GIOVANILE MEDITERRANEA from Palermo, conducted by the sublime Antonio Maniaci. Veronica is also featured on the last track of this CD accompanied by the orchestra, bassist Matthew Parrish and guitarist Kevin Barry. This song she sings, titled Silent Song, was originally recorded by Veronica as the main theme of a score Marcello wrote for a theater play called "Silent Song of Genjer Flower" by Faiza Mardzoeki. After Veronica's departure from this world Marcello isolated her vocal tracks and rewrote an arrangement for string orchestra and an unplugged band.

Profits from CD sales will go to the Veronica Pellitteri Memorial Fund. This fund will FOREVER give a scholarship to a talented graduating student from the Fiorello LaGuardia Performing Arts high school in NYC, where Veronica graduated from in 2009. Veronica was a pianist and a singer.

Joan Jeanrenaud - Visual Music (2016)

Deconet Records

Cellist Joan Jeanrenaud spent more than twenty years as a member of the experimental and always innovative Kronos Quartet. She left the group in 1999, and has since created an adventurous and captivating body work, including four previous CD releases, including the Grammy-nominated Strange Toys ( Talking House Records, 2008) and 2010's Pop-Pop (Deconet Records), in collaboration with percussionist/multi-instrumentalist PC Munoz.

As with all her recordings, Visible Music is a work of art that was created without consideration to labels. It is very much a studio creation, with the cellist often recording, via multi-tracking separate cello lines, with the bow or the occasional percussive pizzicato, then weaving them together, then adding a variety of percussion modes: PC Munoz' African thumb piano parts and drums on "Harmonic Harlem" and "Harlem Strut," respectively, or his cajon, or William Winant's wood blocks or vibraphone.

These seventeen compositions—all Jeanrenaud's—are evocative, like finely crafted pieces of flash fiction, stories that are by turns stark and mournful (the opener, "Solo Prelude"), pensive and atmospheric ("Harmonic Harlem"), ponderous and haunting ("Isola," with its deep, rich sonorities), or an urgent, even desperate, view-from-a-car-speeding-through-a-desolate-lanscape "Dead Reckoning," that sounds like a part of a soundtrack to an Alfred Hitchcock movie.

Joan Jeanrenaud has taken, since her exit from the Kronos Quartet, a consistently experimental path in making music. Visible Music is a cohesive aural statement—she could have called it a suite: cellos and percussion delving into a gorgeous unknown. It's an experiment that succeeds via the artist's willingness to take chances combined with her focused and unwavering vision and her original voice.

The Rita Collective - Forty-One Seconds (2016)

The Rita Collective is a chamber group from Rochester, NY that plays original and world music with a jazz slant.  Performances by the Rita Collective include original compositions written for the group’s unusual instrumentation - bass clarinet, marimba, acoustic bass, and percussion - melodies from the Middle-East or Africa, re-invented jazz tunes from one of the masters like Miles, and re-imagined pop tunes from Rage Against the Machine or the Beatles.  The unifying thread for this group is the improvisatory approach to the music, and the deft playfulness of the musicians that create it.

The group has a sound and feeling rarely found in the jazz world. The bass clarinet is at times hauntingly lyrical and at other times deeply sinister, a fascinating compliment to the beautiful woody tones of the marimba. Acoustic bass supports the melodies with a strength and warmth that rounds out the group, and an altered drum kit reaches beyond the traditional color pallet of drum set to infuse the music with a diverse world beat. Together, these wooden instruments resonate with a warmth and clarity that connects the listener to the music.

The idea to form an acoustic world jazz group sparked when bandleader, Dean Keller, heard The Astounding Eyes of Rita by Tunisian oud master, Anouar Brahem in 2010.  “His disc has such an honesty, warmth, and grace that I had to listen to it over and over.  I knew then that I needed to find the players to make music like that!”, says Dean.  The search for the right players took 3 years, but finally in the fall of 2013, The Rita Collective found the right line up of Dean Keller (Dave Rivello Ensemble, Rick Holland Little Big Band) on bass clarinet, Kristen Shiner McGuire (RPO, Nazareth College) on marimba and vibes, and Kyle Vock (My Plastic Sun, The Mighty High and Dry) on bass.  In 2015, the group welcomed percussionist Joe Parker  to the group.

As individuals, these players have played it all, but as a Collective, they come together in a musical conversation that feels like tea with world leaders at the U.N.  Drawing melody and language from Tunisia, Uganda, England, Cuba, United States, Ethiopia, and more, the improvisations of the Rita Collective are more than simply Jazz solos, they are melodic interplay, finding the common ground in the diverse music that inspires us.  Come out to hear the big acoustic world jazz sound of the Rita Collective as they bring their musical journey to a live music venue near you soon.

The Rita Collective is proud to release their first CD, Forty-One Seconds on April 17, 2016.
Forty-One Seconds is the first release from the Rita Collective, a chamber group from Rochester, NY that plays original and world music with a jazz slant.  The music featured on this intimate recording is a collection of new and original works, plus select arrangements written for the group’s unusual instrumentation (bass clarinet, marimba, acoustic bass, and percussion).  This recording captures the improvisatory interplay and dynamic sensitivity of the group, exploring film noir, tone poems, middle-eastern melodies, and even a little funk.

Thank you to all those who contributed their talent to the project:

The Musicians:  Kristen Shiner McGuire, Kyle Vock, Matt Bevan-Perkins, and Mark Collins

The Photographer:  Scott Hamilton
The Mastering Engineer:  Dave Dusman
The Executive Producer:  Ted Keller

Program Notes by Dean Keller:

Pentagonal Prism is an exploration two very different styles that have influenced my playing over the years: middle-eastern and funk.  The melody is harmonically derived from the blues and rhythmically middle-eastern.  I set it over two different roots  and bass ostinatos to create  a middle-eastern first half and a funky second half.

No Return is an original written for The Rita Collective by David McGuire.  It is an uptempo swing piece that conjures film noir in a playful way and gives Kyle some room to stretch a bit.

Slow Snow is an original of mine built on three phrases: a meditation, an ostinato, and an angular melody. Each voice in the group gets to play all three parts as the ideas are layered together in the development of the piece. On a side note, this is the first piece of music that I wrote for the group...really the first piece I've ever written.

The Astounding Eyes of Rita is the title track from the ECM recording by Anouar Brahem.  I included it on our first CD, not only because it is a great melody, but also as a way to say thank you to Mr. Brahem for inspiring the formation of the Rita Collective with his music.

Sky Sketches is a contrafact I wrote on Miles Davis’s Flamenco Sketches to feature the versatile flugelhorn playing of our friend Mark Collins.

Healing is an original tune I wrote after missing a gig and days of practice due to a split lip. It felt so great to play again after healing that the first six notes that came out that day became the beginning of this melody.

Dark Heart is a moody piece written by our good friend David McGuire, who describes the piece like this, “Dark Heart is a labyrinth where listeners can wander, be misled and encounter the unanticipated; contemplating the nature of irreconcilable or uncanny or impenetrable situations (that we may find ourselves suddenly implicated by or caught in) can be a somber affair—dark heart—but there is nothing necessarily fatalistic in this—labyrinths can be escaped—or evaded—or transcended”.  Kyle always says it reminds him of the inner workings of a clock, with many little parts all ticking away, sometimes separately and other times together.

Dance with Waves was the first tune I discovered on Anouar Brahem’s disc.  I stumbled across it on Youtube searching for “jazz bass clarinet.”  Anouar’s group features the incredible bass clarinet playing of Klaus Gesing, whom I was fortunate enough to get a lesson with when he was in Rochester for the XRIJF in 2014 with Norma Winstone.

Killing in the Name might not seem to be the best fit to cover for a chamber music group, but with a few little twists, and some room for Matt to stretch out, it is an exciting addition to this recording.

Gotta Gig(ue) and Epilogue are movements from a suite that Kristen wrote many years before the formation of the Rita Collective, but seemed such a natural fit for us to open up a little bit and have some fun.

Happy listening!

For those of you who made it this far, I'll reward you with the story behind the title.  About the time we were making this recording, my daughter was two years old, and at bed time she liked to drink warm milk.  Forty-One Seconds was the perfect amount of time to heat her milk in the microwave, and it also seemed the perfect title for the CD.  ~DK
