escribir: haikus (October 15, 2021 Isla Desierta)

David Ornette Cherry - Organic Nation Listening Club (The Continual) October 15, 2021 Spiritmuse Records

When I play I think of how the phrases move as a dance, or something in nature like a bird or a shooting star.” – Don Cherry

The new album by ‘Cosmic Nomad’ David Ornette Cherry in his father’s tradition, the legendary jazz innovator Don Cherry. This a mosaic of healing soundscapes blending spiritual jazz, leftfield electronica, Eastern & native, indigenous sounds into musical parallels that transport the listener through doorways of ancient pathways to futurist crossroads.

David Ornette Cherry talks about vision and approach and Don Cherry’s remarkable influence as an artist : “When I started my musical journey, my father, Don Cherry, took me under his wings. “To be an Artist/ Musician is a commitment, you must learn the music… own the music you create... and give it back. You must have a vision.”

This a mosaic of healing soundscapes blending spiritual jazz, leftfield electronica, Eastern & native, indigenous sounds into musical parallels that transport the listener through doorways of ancient pathways to futurist crossroads.

This is a phenomenal, unique album, bringing together multi-genre funky, earthy Indigenous sounds, organic soundscapes and cosmic melodies that transport to a higher level where the Ancestors weave their magic and join the cosmic dance!

“In my world, the piano, the keyboard, sounds of nature and numerous instruments of traditional peoples and those who reside in urban society, touch and effect each other with a calming and symbiotic fervour. I compose with the idea that all exist in a world of harmonies which mirror life evolving away from the chaotic (to the positive). There's not just a co-existence but a melding of forms to produce a single musical expression.” - David Ornette Cherry

"Invisible forces of David Ornette Cherry’s musicality are framed by his latest offering. Delicately balanced and perfectly paired with a palette of delicious grandiloquence--sounds summon the discerning ear to bathe in the light of ancestral voices. Notes reverently layered, his fingers unfold a pastiche of dancers in fluid movements of shadow and light that sonder across the polished foundation of his musical ark. In the Continual, Cherry unveils his creative genius that resonates, merging assonance, dissonance in musical parallels that work to woo--to transport the listener through doorways of a legendary Alhambra to a futurist crossroads where the Highlander’s war pipes bid us join in the revelry--we heed the funky call." - DJ Watson

"David Cherry was born into a cosmic-centered family I say this having known both Don and Carletta Cherry his parents as well as his sister, violinist Jan Cherry. In ‘Organic Nation Listening Club (the Continual)’, David continues his work which is represented in organic grooves/Organic Nation bending and reshaping genres to suit his artistic and musical vision. The voices, the sitar and percussions embody the essence of the simplicity of complexity without the banality that some minimalism slips into. For those who have ears, David and the Organic Nation are a force to reckon with." - Tom Porter

GULFH of Berlin - GULFH of Berlin (October 15, 2021 ESP - Disk')

Gschlössl, Ullmann, Leipnitz, and Fink improvise as composers would do. From scratch they create a holistic sound sculpture – each time unique and unpredictable – always with a formal approach. Haves was invited to create with them using analogue electronics. In the moment and without overdubbing he becomes the fifth element in GULFH of Berlin.

“Few improvising artists can boast the stream of creative ideas that seem to bubble from Gebhard Ullmann. Ullmann focuses on the fundamentals of improvised jazz: melody, sound, syncopation and technical excellence, but what makes his writing and playing so successful is his seemingly neverending innovative nature: without grasping for neoteric straws, Ullmann's performances are grounded in the past but plunge forward deliberately toward modernity. Ullmann leaves the strong mark of a disciplined sculptor of sound, who speaks his own compelling language.” — Steve Loewy, Cadence

Dos Santos - City of Mirrors (October 15, 2021 International Anthem)

This album is an assemblage…
…glimpses of tradition
…reflections on our collective present
…luminous echoes between love and solitude.
hope and absurdity.
euphoria and mourning.

This album grapples with and transgresses these binaries because we have/and continue to cross borders. Yet, for us, the border is no metaphor—too much real staring back at us.

We embody the border.
We (our families) have crossed it.
We (our stories) are coated with its residues.
And so… we cross the border of self through our art—out of necessity.

This album was imagined while touring the country as families were corralled in cages.
We then fled the wildfire of a nascent pandemic poised to (especially) ravage our communities as we recorded in Los Angeles.
And our sonic journey concluded in Chicago while the country rebelled against the murderous consequences of policing in the U.S.

Through this cascade of tipping points and tragedy, we summoned melody and verse to sound out verdant technicolor dreams of freedom and desire, mirroring the vortex of our time.

And borders were at the center of these struggles.
Borders—of nation, of belonging—are the struggle.

And so, this album is a set of dispatches from that wondrous journey…
…our journey across and into a sunburst surreal.
…our astral meditations on loss and triumph.
…our sonic trek across a landscape of trauma and effervescence.

…The border divides and defines places—yes. But it is equally a place unto itself—a borderland.
It is the forbidden place where we dwell.
The enchanting space where we are at home.
The bustling city where we reflect.
Look into our mirror. See us in you.

Nick Sanders - Phantoms of Memory (October 15, 2021 Sunnyside Records)

Recollections can become hazy over time. The brain finds ways to retell stories, evolving them as they are reshown in the mind’s eye. Pianist and composer Nick Sanders looks back at his own past frequently to inform his musical progress. Though known primarily as a jazz pianist, Sanders began his musical study and career as a classical performer.

When he looks back, Sanders fondly remembers times when classical music was his primary musical focus, though these memories are now seen through a prism of his progress through jazz and improvisatory music. On his new recording, Phantoms of Memory, Sanders prepared a collection of original compositions to be performed on solo piano. The mainly notated compositions hark back to his classical past while propelling his compositional craft further.

Originally from New Orleans, Sanders has been a part of the New York jazz scene for nearly a decade. He has released three records featuring his trio, and a duo recording with saxophonist Logan Strosahl, on Sunnyside Records. These recordings highlight the young pianist’s creative approach to both composing and improvising.

It wasn’t until he was thirteen years old that Sanders was introduced to American jazz music. Up until that time, he had been a student-performer of classical music, practicing some four to five hours a day, and any improvisation that he did was in an effort to sound like classical pieces he was studying. Perhaps though, it was the daily and ever-present influence of his immigrant mother’s native Cuban music that eventually persuaded Sanders to focus on the study and pursuit of jazz. His high school, the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, welcomed his dual participation in both the classical and jazz programs.

Sanders long considered recording an album of solo piano works. His plans matured around the time of the release of Playtime 2050 (2019), his most recent trio recording. The pianist considered the ways in which he could approach such a project: Playing jazz standards, mostly improvised material, a mixture of both, or something completely new and different…. Sanders knew that he wanted to show his range and versatility and make a highly listenable and accessible recording.
Classical music influences were always near to mind, as Sanders had recently been listening to, and performing works by, Claude Debussy, Frédéric Chopin, Sergei Prokofiev, Robert Schumann, Scott Joplin and J.S. Bach. To challenge himself, the pianist began to write classically inspired pieces, not in the style of any of these great composers but in respect for the repertoire they had provided him.

The pieces that he wrote both in Brooklyn and his recent home, San Diego, were all done in the sequestered conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic. The compositions are of varied moods and approaches, many requiring quite a bit of practice to be able to perform.

The program begins with the quiet, hymn-like “Stained Glass Memory,” which takes its cues from Sanders’ Catholic upbringing and the mysterious but comforting feeling that embraced him during his early years as a congregant. “Wish for Rapture” continues with an austere but melancholy feel, while the technically demanding perpetual motion of “The Spinning Door,” in homage to Phillip Glass, frames the evolving melody over a quick tempo. Sanders revisits one of his favorite original recordings for “Simple Redux,” played here in a changed key and added gravitas. Primarily inspired by Chopin, Sanders wrote “Dancing in an Empty Room,” a tonal, modern waltz.

The dramatic and brooding “Typhon’s Memory” is named for the lethal serpent of Greek mythology, whose power is reflected in its grandiose opening but whose loneliness is mirrored by its stark development. The brief but dynamic “It’s Just Anger” is a fast and intense etude that leads to the intricately woven “Waltz for Future Spectres,” a deceptive waltz that uses hemiola to shift the tempo and Prokofiev’s device of introducing and then weaving two themes together. The recording concludes with the reverent “Hallowed Grounds,” an anthem that has a subtle Americana tinge in its folkloric roots.

On his new album Phantoms of Memory, Nick Sanders has stepped away from the safety of ensemble playing to showcase an original compositional style that blends his influences of classical and jazz music.

ROVA Saxophone Quartet - The Circumference of Reason (October 15, 2021 ESP - Disk')

Despite the obvious obstacles, this singular San Francisco Bay Area band is staying on mission, moving forward. Over its four-plus decades, the quartet has defined itself by applying an array of improvisational strategies to an ever-expanding body of new music.

The Circumference of Reason includes six tracks composed or, in the case of the piece "NC17," designed between 2011 and 2016. Then – in typical ROVA fashion – the pieces were worked over and performed by the quartet in rehearsals and concerts until perceived to be ready for recording. They include an arrangement of a Glenn Spearman piece as well as a piece by Steve Adams dedicated to Glenn; the playing on both inspired by that expressive saxophonist’s spirited personality and playing.

As well, this recording features two distinctly different versions of NC17, another in the series of ROVA’s structured-improvisations, all of which have been designed using an ever-expanding set of visual and aural cues that the quartet has invented, or borrowed and adapted. On its face, "NC17" is simply a specific set of conceptual options to cue in, in any order, and to then explore, populating the spontaneously chosen series of cued events with immersive music/sounds/energies etc.

The group creates a palpable sonic architecture for each new performance of the piece. Even as we write this, we can say that the takes of "NC17" you will hear on this CD are unique; no one take of "NC17" can be exactly the same as any other take of "NC17."

“ROVA performances can reach the soaring lyrical intensity of bel canto, the rough-and-tumble tumult of a garage rock band, or the insistently patterned matrix of a minimalist chamber work.” So wrote Andrew Gilbert in 2018. The piece from which the CD’s title comes, "The Circumference of Reason," is a good example of a minimalist piece when penned by a ROVA composer, in this case Steve Adams.

Agustin Pereyra Lucena Quartet - La Rana (October 15, 2021 Far Out Recordings)

Far Out Recordings proudly presents Argentinian guitarist Agustín Pereyra Lucena’s 1980 album La Rana. Recorded in Oslo, La Rana features Agustín’s stunning takes on compositions by Ivan Lins, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Agustín’s friend and musical hero Baden Powell. In addition to these, and a number of Agustín’s own compositions including the fifteen-minute masterpiece “Encuentro De Sombras”, the album’s title track is an idiosyncratic version of Joao Donato’s “A Rã” (Eng: The Frog/ Esp: La Rana) from his 1973 album Quem É Quem.

Forming the rest of the quartet are two fellow Argentinians who were also Agustin’s bandmates from the group Candeias: bassist and multi-instrumentalist Guillermo Reuter and flautist Ruben Izarrualde; with Norweigan drummer Finn Sletten on drums and percussion.

Throughout La Rana we hear not only Agustín’s fabled guitar playing, which ascended him to share stages with the likes of Vinicius de Moraes, Dorival Cayymi, Toquinho, Maria Bethania, Chico Buarque and Quarteto Em Cy, but also his talent as a vocalist. He also provided the heartening illustration for the cover art, which perfectly fits the cordial, inviting tone of the music. Inspired in equal measure by South American rhythms and Norweigan glaciers, mountains and waterfalls, La Rana is filled with the warmth, humility and sincerity of a man seizing a joyful moment in life through music.

Piotr Scholz - Birds from Another Planet (October 15, 2021)

Birds from Another Planet is a seven-part composition for big-band. Each of them is based on one symmetrical scale defined by Olivier Messiaen and maintained in a different jazz style. The scales were used mainly in a big-band arrangement, but often the construction of individual improvised fragments forces soloists to use symmetrical scales, in jazz commonly not used as a separate color or timbre.

Tettero - Don't Explain (November 13, 2021)

“Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion”. Martha Graham

'These songs have been part of my life for a long time.

Some go back to my early childhood, while others came later as I started to explore my own taste in music. Somehow these songs also came to represent a significant memory of a person or an event in my life.

The Tettero Band goes way back. We played many nights in the legendary Jazz Cafe Alto at the start of this century: exhausting 5 hour long sets that gave us the opportunity to really play and develop our sound both as individuals and as a group.

On those nights we would mix our sets with prearranged music as well as with completely open jams. It could be a drum or bass groove getting the music going or Charlie or I would play a set of changes and we would all jump on it.

Slowly but surely the jam parts started to invade our rehearsed repertoire and we came to realize that by mixing up freedom and structure within an arrangement it was possible to get the best of both worlds. Furthermore we saw that the Saturday night crowd, which could be hard to please, responded to the new direction the music was taking with enthusiasm.

So when the crux of this recording started to take shape in my mind, freedom within structure became the adage. I got hold of the members of the Tettero band, asked Peter Bjørnild to produce and Frans de Rond to record.

Listening to the recording as I am writing these words, I realize that this album is probably the most personal album I have made so far. It is puzzling to me since all the songs are standards and not my own originals. But that’s music, it never ceases to astonish.

It has been a most fulfilling experience making this album together with a group of people I really trust on a professional level and furthermore really like a lot on a personal level. I am very proud of the result and am so very grateful to everyone involved in making this new Tettero album.'

Jeppe Gram - The Doldrums (October 2021 Storyville Records)

The Danish drummer Jeppe Gram has long been a prominent figure on the Danish jazz scene. The Doldrums features nine new compostions and is his fourth album as a composer & bandleader. For this project Gram has brought together three generations of musicians who are all key figures on the Copenhagen jazz scene.

Tenor Tomas Franck is orignally from Sweden but has been one of the greatest personalities on the Danish jazz scene for decades.

The middle generation is represented by cornet player Tobias Wiklund who moves freely between modern artistic expression and a more traditional sound, and Anders Fjeldsted who has played with acclaimed local and international jazz musicians and in 2017 was one of the recipients of the Bent Jædig-Award. Jacob Artved and Ollie Wallace represent the younger generation, but are already well established musicians and are celebrated as two of the greatest young talents on the contemporary Danish jazz scene.

The mix of musicians from Gram's life from past to present is an essentiel part of the album and he describes the music as instinctively relatable for the musicians, regardless of the age differences. Musically, The Doldrums is centered around variations on the blues: both the lamenting feeling and, in a more music-theoretical sense, the blues as a form or shape with great inspiration from Gram's own jazz heroes, such as Kenny Garret, Joshua Redman and Charlie Haden. “This album is my way of saying THANK YOU to all the music and all the people who meant a lot to me back thenand still continue to do so today - musicians who have helped me develop into who and where I am today.

UŽUPIS - DIRT (October 21, 2021 WolleSonic)

The first studio album from UŽUPIS began as a way to record some of my hand-built instruments which I call Wollesonics. I built these instruments specifically for an all percussion production of Macbeth directed by master magician Teller. To accompany the "Weird Sisters", I built a 10-foot “Diddley Bow” out of music wire, 2 x 4’s and styrofoam ice buckets. I built a zither with exposed threaded rods to give Lady Macbeth a ghostly soundscape while she washes her bloody hands. I built a “Slide Vibe“ that bends pitches by dipping metal bars into water to sonically portray Macbeth's dissent into madness. In addition to the Wollesonics, I brought my set of 15 large sheep bells I acquired from the Campanacci Floris bell making family of Tonara, Sardinia.

We came into the famed Figure 8 studios with no set songs. The forms and textures and songs grew out of the instruments. Crack engineer and sound swami Phil Weinrobe experimented with hydrophones, electronics and triggers that blended extremely well with the Wollesonics. With Will Shore’s intuitive, sensitive production and masterful vibe playing and Dalius Naujo’s unconventional poetic drumming, we ended up with more than enough music to make DIRT -the premiere full length album from UŽUPIS!

Dave Young - Mantra (October 2021 Modica Music)

The basic group was a sextet augmented by John Johnson (alto sax, flute) Les Ault (flute) and Ewen Farncolme (B3 organ).

The original compositions are largely from 5-10 years ago. Waltz for Blue is dedicated to Blue Mitchell who I played with on several occasions at Bourbon St jazz club in Toronto in the 80's.

Ode to the Southwest was originally recorded with Cedar Walton but this version I especially like with the B3 overdub.

I would like to thank all the musicians -Kevin,Perry,Reg,Brian,Terry,John,Les and Ewen - for their exceptional talents in bringing this music "alive" during a difficult time. And many thanks to my friend and producer Roberto Occhipinti for making us all sound great! Photos by Dan Nawrocki.

Kate Pass Kohesia Ensemble - Silver Lining (October 2021)

Most of the compositions on this album were written for a show called “Shahnameh: Songs of the Persian Book of Kings” which was performed at FRINGE WORLD in 2020, and won the Martin Sims Award. This award was intended to fund a tour, but with travel restrictions we decided to record an album instead – a silver lining!

“Silver Lining” was the first composition I wrote in Perth’s very short lockdown at the start of 2020. This song, and the album, is an expression of gratitude for living in Perth, and for all the opportunities and good fortune I’ve had over the past 18 months, despite a lot of anxiety, uncertainty and disruption. I’m so grateful to have a wonderful community of people to share music with, and to have music in my life.

Daniel Garcia Trio - Vía de la Plata (ACT Music)

Madrid-based pianist Daniel Garcia carries within him a deep sense of the history that has made him. This is not least because he was born and grew up in Salamanca, a city steeped in history, with several important archaeological sites. In the centuries ever since the middle ages, student priests have walked in their flowing robes along the Calle Compañia, a street in the centre of the city shadowed by tall baroque buildings. The city was also one of the main stopovers on the Vía de la Plata (‘the silver way’), a Roman route from North to South of the Iberian peninsula.

Clear, thoughtful and self-aware when he speaks, Garcia has both an understanding and a passion for what that ancient silver thread through his country means: the Vía de la Plata gave the peninsula its main artery. It also allowed Spain to come together for the first time, to define itself. Spain exists as a melting pot of different cultures, with influences Celtic and Nordic, from the Eastern Mediterranean and Africa, and from the Americas too. Vía de la Plata is a living symbol of how “all of this melts together in Spain,” as Garcia explains. And that – musically – is what he has achieved here.

The pianist’s awareness of these different cultures which have formed Spain is everywhere in this album: the guest artists on the album represent musical heritages from different points of the compass.

Trumpet star Ibrahim Maalouf, born in Beirut, performs on two tracks, the reflective opener, Manuel de Falla’s “Canción del fuego fatuo” (song of the will-o'-the-wisp), and on “Silk Road”, a tantalising glimpse further East. Charismatic clarinettist Anat Cohen, raised in Israel, now based in the Americas, makes her debut on ACT with this album. She produces wonderful emotion and a flickeringly delicate final cadenza on “Pai Lan”, a tune dedicated to Garcia’s wife, the title of the tune being the name by which she (Belén) was known as when she lived in China.

Another guest on the album is fellow Spaniard, guitarist Gerardo Núñez. He and Garcia are equally fascinated by the links between Flamenco and jazz. In this, their first co-operation here they show a natural empathy, notably in “Calima” named after the wind that carries sandstorms from the Sahara. Garcia’s fellow trio members – Reinier Elizarde (bass), Michael Olivera (drums) – are from Cuba. Garcia met them on the scene in Madrid. All three are in their mid-thirties, and are close friends both on and off stage.

Garcia is a passionate advocate for Salamanca's musical heritage. The title track “ Vía de la Plata”, with its intoxicating echoes of both Ravel and the Cameroonian coupé-décalé has Garcia and Anat Cohen trading fragments of melodies from the charrada, a centuries-old Salamancan peasant dance, with everything fitting together miraculously and seamlessly.

It is now a decade since Daniel Garcia won prizes as a student at Berklee College of Music in Boston, and received teaching and mentoring from Danilo Pérez. Garcia remembers the great Panamanian pianist encouraging him to go deeper into the music of his home country: “You should do the music you feel inside. This is not just what you do, this is YOU!” It is as if that advice has never gone away...

In “Vía de la Plata”, Daniel Garcia has not just dug deep into his heritage as man and musician, and understood truths about it. He has also found ways to express these through the emotions: deeply, convincingly and fully in this very fine album.

Nils Landgren Solo - Nature Boy (ACT Music)

The Man with the Red Horn. Nils Landgren’s nickname is apt. It brings to mind the fiery, coruscating energy with which the charismatic, soulful trombonist leads his Funk Unit. And yet there are many other facets to this hugely popular Swedish musician. In the course of a 40-year career, he has taken on many roles, producing albums, directing festivals, leading big bands, teaching in universities...And yet his musical personality also has a very different side, one that is much more delicate and softer. Ithas previously come to the fore in various contexts, notably at the end of the 1990s in his duo with Esbjörn Svensson and their groundbreaking interpretations of Swedish folk music on the albums "Swedish Folk Modern" and "Layers Of Light". He has also increasingly nurtured it as a singer of ballads, with a very appe...

Simply This Quintet - Stepping Up (October 2021)

"Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic we had not rehearsed or performed together since August 2020. Because of the unique nature of the group consisting of graduate students, we weren't able to focus on this project until the spring academic semester ended. We had a total of eleven days to figure out which eight songs would be on this album. In deciding on those eight songs, we rehearsed brand new music as well as considered music from our library of over 25 original compositions. We rehearsed about 3 hours a day, every day, for those eleven days along with playing two gigs in town to get comfortable performing with each other as we explored this music. Our drummer Frank Kurtz affectionately calls these eleven days together "Jazz Camp". The level of comfort within the ensemble grew by the hour, and we returned each day with new ideas to make this music ours. I believe "Stepping Up" exemplifies the quintet's dedication to the history of jazz as well as the future of jazz, as each member continues to develop their voice within the voice of the ensemble."

Raposa Velha - Raposa Velha (December 1, 2021 Mad About Records)

Raposa Velha was a notable Bahian jazz group, which was part of the wave of great musicians and bands from Bahia during the 1980s, such as Sexteto do Beco, Saul Barbosa and Andréa Daltro. Thus, Raposa Velha released only this album, independently in 1981. Outlined between jazz-fusion and avant-garde jazz, this LP has become a very obscure piece within the Brazilian jazz universe.
