Dave Anderson - Dave Anderson's Blue Innuendo (2016)

Label: Label 1

To get to it straight off, this is NOT a guitarist's album. So why am I posting it on this blog? Because it is a very together organ band headed by a very together tenor man, and as that it is a model for such things today, the guitarist's role being played to perfection, as is the role of the organist, the drummer, and...of course the tenor.
Dave Anderson is the tenor (and soprano) man in question. He leads the band through a set of hiply swinging originals on Blue Innuendo (Label 1 2003-2). This is music rooted in the toughness of hard bop, yet fully modern in its tang of the beyond. It is no accident that Dave dedicates one of the numbers to Joe Henderson, for there is some of that sophisticated, hard-driving facility going on here, plus Dave himself showing his own way through nicely.
Dave Anderson sounds great, with plenty to say on both horns and a way of saying it that channels sax soulfulness and a true sense of what matters, yesterday and today.
Pat Bianchi on organ is a model for the extensions of organ bop-soul into now. He makes me smile as he always seems to. Tom Guarna, the guitarist, has a perfect presence in the ensemble and solos with authority. He also in his own way channels bop-and-after giants yet sounds original and contemporary.
Matt Wilson on drums comes through as he ever does as the swinging giant so necessary for the success of this kind of thing.
It's a model for how the organ-band roots can be enacted but with the modern complexities brought to the fore at the same time. A blazer, a hip disk is this! Hear it.

Gwilym Simcock: Delta Saxophone Quartet - Crimson! (2016)

The new work Crimson unites Gwilym Simcock, one of the UK's most imaginative jazz composers with the Delta Saxophone Quartet, one of Europe's most distinguished new music ensembles.

Following Delta's most recent première Run Riot by Mark-Anthony Turnage, Crimson continues this 30 year legacy of excitement, innovation and excellence.

The quartet has worked closely with many leading composers having commissioned works from Gavin Bryars, Steve Martland, Joe Duddell, Hugh Hopper, Mike Westbrook, Mark-Anthony Turnage and Michael Finnissy to name a few. The quartet has always looked to extend the range/repertoire and possibilities of what a quartet of saxophones can present, combining a variety of musical genres and styles with a dynamic and informative presentation.

Musical accolades are no stranger for Gwilym Simcock too, being a winner of the Perrier Award, BBC Jazz Awards 2005 and British Jazz Awards 2005. Gwilym was also the first BBC Radio 3 New Generation jazz Artist. His performances with Bill Bruford's Earthworks gives Gwilym the inside-edge and knowledge, which adds a real gravitas to this exciting project.

The quartet is delighted that Gwilym has accepted their invitation, as part of its 30th anniversary season, to compose this new work Crimson, (supported by PRSF), which combines the skills and tastes of music which will certainly sit somewhat beyond the shores of classical, jazz and rock.

Ashley Henry's - 5ive (2016)

Ashley Henry is one of a new generation of musicians that have been raised with a wide range of influences, from such luminaries as Kirkland, Glasper Moran, Madlib and Dilla, yet also steeped in the traditional sounds of masters like Hancock and Monk.

At only 24, Ashley plays the piano with a beauty and sensitivity that usually comes from a lifetime immersed in jazz and this has been picked up on by other musicians. He has already toured the UK & internationally alongside many bands and ensembles, appearing in renowned venues such as Ronnie Scott’s, The Jazz Café and the Royal Albert Hall.

Recently made it to the finals of the Unisa International Piano Competition in South Africa and was the youngest on the bill for the 2015 International piano trio festival where performed alongside the likes of Robert Glasper.

After graduating from Leeds College of Music in 2014 with the Yamaha Jazz Scholarship award (an award given to the best musician graduating from each music college) Ashley continued his studies with a Masters degree in Jazz piano & Performance at the Royal Academy of Music.

As well as performing regularly with some of the UK’s leading jazz musicians such as Gary Crosby, Jean Toussaint, Shane Forbes, Jay Phelps, and award-winning Saxophonist Krzysztof Urbanski, Ashley has also recorded extensively with award- winning Hip- Hop Group “The Mouse Outfit” who are a collective of musicians and producers based in Manchester.

Ashley’s trio are clearly influenced by hip-hop but have their roots firmly rooted in jazz – this is the next generation putting their feet down and flexing their muscles.

Steve Lacy: Keptorchestra Meets Steve Lacy - Sweet Sixteen (Remastered + Bonus Track - Historical Tapes) 2016

This collaboration between Steve Lacy and Italy's Keptorchestra took place on the band's tenth anniversary. Lacy was invited to partake in the festivities because of a longstanding relations stemming from a gig seven years previous. Recorded in 1993 and issued in 1994, Keptorchestra is a big band that is full of maturity, grace, and glorious winging capabilities, but they play together like newcomers entering into the excitement for the first time. Some members of the band, trombonist Giancarlo Giannini and saxophonists Mauro Negri, Pietro Tonolo, and Bruno Marini are well known in their own right as bandleaders.

The rest have made this band and session work their lives. Most of them compose for the band and those compositions as well as three of Lacy's -- "Blinks," "Esteem," and the title track -- were written especially for this date. While different players shine -- they are all fine soloists and the blend of colors is astonishingly bright -- there are a couple of real standouts: "Plastic City" with its airy funkiness with composer Maurizio Cauldura's tenor solo; Mario Tamburini's gorgeous arrangement of "Eduard" that is reminiscent of the color palette used by Gil Evans; and Lacy's savvy, canny generosity in "Sweet Sixteen" allowing virtually every player a spot to shine without the regressive "one chorus and a round of applause" theory. He literally wrote in the sections for soloing and for whom in what mode. This is a joyous, deeply textured approach to big-band jazz by one of the finest Europe has to offer.

Bill Charlap Trio - Notes from New York (2016)

Label: ¡Impulse!
Source: Zikeo

Francesco Ciniglio Trio - Wood (2016)

Born in Naples (Italy) on March 5th 1989, Francesco Ciniglio started playing the drums at age 6 under the tutelage of Maestro Sergio Di Natale. As a teenager, while studying the drums, he also worked on learning foreign languages at high school, and travelled throughout Europe and South Africa as translator and interpreter for his school. In 2010 he moved to New York on a student visa, as an undergraduate student at the City College of New York – Jazz Department (CCNY). Here he had the opportunity to study with John Patitucci, Fred Hersch, Mike Holober, Dan Carillo and Scott Reeves, as well as taking private lessons with Gregory Hutchinson.

On January 2015, 1 year after graduating from college in 2014, Francesco moved to Rome and on March 2015 he recorded his first EP with Aaron Parks on piano and Joe Sanders on Upright Bass. The album, out on March 2016 with Fresh Sound New Talent, was recorded at the Bunker Studios, Brooklyn (NY) and it’s made of Francesco’s original compositions, together with jazz standards and free improvisations.

Since he started working as a professional musician, around the age of 18, he got to share the stage with some of the main jazz musicians active worldwide today. In March 2015 he toured Northern Europe with Aaron Parks’ “Little Big”, featuring Charles Altura on guitar and Anders Christensen on electric bass; then on May 15th 2015 he played with Joe Sanders’ Infinity Band at the Duc Des Lombards Jazz Club in Paris, featuring Logan Richardson on alto sax and Laurent Coq on piano; on November 5th 2015 he played with the Shai Maestro Trio, feat. Jorge Roeder on bass, at the Jazz & Blues Festival in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Other collaborations worth mentioning are: Dayna Stephens, Joel Frahm, Donny McCaslin, Scott Colley, Sheila Jordan, John Ellis, Peter Slavov, Mark Sherman, Vincent Gardner, Wayne Tucker, Melissa Aldana, Jure Pukl, Dida Pelled, Alex Claffy, Alan Hampton, Harish Raghavan, Ari Roland, Mike Karn, Cyrille Aimee, Stefano Di Battista, Rosario Giuliani, Alessandro Presti, Alessandro Lanzoni, Gabriele Evangelista and Daniele Tittarelli to mention some.

Now Francesco is a touring musician based in Rome. He’s a freelance jazz drummer, reference point for world touring artists.

Playlist for Tom Ossana / Dane Brewer – The Thin Edge (March 23, 2016 MST 7:00 to 9:00p.m.)

There are at least four varieties of "moaning" or, if you prefer, "moanin'." There is John Lee Hooker's version, "Moanin' the Blues"  recorded in the UK in 1981. We're not going to hear that one tonight unfortunately. We will hear Charlie Mingus' "Moanin'" from his 1956 Atlantic recording Passions of a Man featuring the influential bassist along with Jackie McLean, Pepper Adams - baritone sax - and many others. Michael Herring's Quartet follows from his 2016 A Very Large Gap featuring two baritones - David French and Chris Gale hewing closely to the original version of Mingus' tune arranged by the leader, bassist Herring. Art Blakey follows with the definitive version of Bobby Timmon's "Moanin'" from a 1958 Blue Note release of the same name, a big time hit covered by countless artists, one of which is the cover by Lambert, Hendricks & Ross from their 1961 Columbia Everybody's Boppin' with lyrics added by Jon Hendricks. The three varieties mentioned above are musical; the fourth is the version we all sound from time to time.

The second half-hour squeezes in John Lee Hooker as he joins Miles Davis and Taj Majal in a performance from his live musical soundtrack from the 1990 movie The Hot Spot; the tune: "Empty Bank" penned by Jack Nitzsche. Hendrik Meurkens covers Freddie Hubbard's "Up Jumped Spring" from his 2016 Height Advantage Harmonicus Rex featuring Hendrik on harmonica, an artist we've heard many times over the years. The venerable German pianist, Joachim Kühn, closes this segment covering Gil Evans' "Blues for Pablo" featuring Chris Jennings on bass and Eric Schaefer on the drums. "Blues for Pablo" was a favorite in Miles Davis work with Gil in Miles Ahead,  an album that was released in 1957 by Columbia Records. It was Davis' first collaboration with arranger Gil Evans following the Birth of the Cool sessions.

John Zorn put together a trio with young lion pianist Craig Taborn in a 2016 Tzadik release Flaga Book of Angels, Volume 27 featuring bassist Christian McBride and drummer Tyshawn Sorey in the Zorn penned "Machnia". Newcomer, percussionist Jeff Williams, follows with the title track from his new Whirlwind Recordings Ltd. Outlier. A Paul Smith favorite, Shorty Rogers, is next with his "West Coast" version of the new jazz in a performance of Shorty's "Marooned in a Monsoon" featuring the trumpeter along with the trend-setting reeds of Jimmy Giuffre from the Shorty's 1956 Wherever the Five Winds Blow. Also new to the show, pianist Chris Ziemba covers Gordon and Warren's "I Wish I Knew" from his 2016 muzoic Manhattan Lullaby. The CD features the alto saxophone of Michael Thomas.

Thanks to Danny, I've developed this fascination with Blues shouter, Beth Hart. She will kick off the Romantic Half-Hour with "Mechanical Heart" from her 2015 release, Better than Home. The lyrics are included in the attached playlist. The incurable romantic, pianist Bill Charlap is next with his cover of Gene de Paul and Don Raye's "I'll Remember April" from his new Impulse Notes from New York. Peter and Kenny Washington handle the rhythm section. The Sachal Ensemble, a Pakistani imbued group, is next with a cover of Michael Jackson's "Man in the Middle" from the group's Universal Music release, Song of Lahore. Dane will fill in the international details during the broadcast.

Guillaume de Chassy & Daniel Yvinec's Songs From The Last Century (Bee Jazz 2009) is next with a cover of Schwartz and Harburg's "Then I'll Be Tired of You" featuring one of our favorite vocalists, the recently departed Mark Murphy. Karrin Allyson closes this intimate half-hour with her treatment of Matt Dennis' "Angel Eyes" from her 2002 recording, In Blue. Digging a ditch is more fulfilling when you're in love. Let's have some fun!

Karl’s latest trio follows the critically acclaimed Egan/Latham/Hart Unit1 and Latham/Carniaux/Egan Constellations. With the inclusion of virtuosic guitarist Vic Juris, Living Standards clearly draws from the interpretive spirit of Unit1 and Constellations providing a rhythmic and harmonic adventure in a vehicle of iconic pop standards.

The Karl Latham Group “Living Standards” is a culmination of both Latham’s protean imagination for transformative musical projects which unite sophisticated musicianship with themes that embrace a wider listenership and his musical and personal relationship with preeminent bassist Mark Egan and Master guitarist Vic Juris.

John Raymond - Real Feels (2016)

“Real Feels” (2016): The Roots of Success for John Raymond

“I feel like the album captures the seed of something on its way to becoming more honest and beautiful, and I think there’s a certain “magic” to that that makes it special to me.” –John Raymond

“Electrifyingly new and strangely familiar at the same time…with his mix of modern sounds and old-fashioned feeling, Raymond is steering jazz in the right direction.” – Downbeat Magazine

Few young musicians truly find success when they spread their wings in the Big Apple. That Twin Cities native trumpeter John Raymond found plenty of work as a sideman and leader within a few years of his graduation from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is in part testimony to his artistic talent, in part to his tenacity in marketing his music. Both have served him well on the New York scene: In addition to completing his master’s degree under Jon Faddis at SUNY-Purchase, Raymond has gigged regularly with his own ensembles throughout the Manhattan club circuit and on national tours; participated in the renowned Festival of New Trumpet; received the 2015 Herb Alpert Young Composer Award; and released a well-received recording on Fresh Sound/New Talent, featuring the great drummer, Billy Hart (Foreign Territory, 2015). Fortunately for Twin Cities’ audiences, John returns “home” often, and on one of those visits in fall 2014, he performed at Studio Z with what he then called his Roots Trio (with guitarist Gilad Hekselman and drummer Colin Stranahan). Shortly thereafter, the trio went into Terrarium Studios in Minneapolis to lay down the tracks that became Real Feels, to be officially released in February on the Twin Cities label, Shifting Paradigm Records.

From “Roots” to “Real Feels”
Real Feels is a unique project on several levels. For the first time, John relies solely on the flugelhorn. “I’ve transitioned to only playing flugelhorn with the trio,” he told Bebopified’s Pamela Espeland before the Roots Trio gig in St. Paul. “I think it sounds great with guitar. That comes out of the Art Farmer/Jim Hall influence. Farmer is one of the only people who’s known for playing mainly flugelhorn. I got a new flugelhorn, and there’s something about it and just playing flugel in general that has brought out a voice in me that I didn’t have playing trumpet.”

The trio instrumentation is unusual –just flugelhorn, guitar and drums, somewhat akin to the Paul Motian/Joe Lovano/Bill Frisell Trio. “The bass-less vibe is very unique,” says Raymond. “Gilad is one of the only people I know that function so effortlessly in a situation like this. In a sense I’ve given him all control of the harmony, comping, and different textures, and I feel that he really thrives in this setting.” An Israeli native, guitarist Gilad Hekselman has developed a stellar reputation over his first decade in New York, winning the 2005 Gibson Montreux International Guitar Competition, releasing four recordings as leader, and sharing the stage with such notables as Chris Potter, Mark Turner, John Scofield, Anat Cohen, Ari Hoenig, Esperanza Spalding, Gretchen Parlato, Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts and more. Denver native Colin Stranahan was selected as a Brubeck Fellow after high school graduation and as a participant in Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead program, and in 2012 placed third in the Thelonious Monk International Drum Competition. Notes Raymond, “Colin was someone that I played a handful of sessions with before doing some gigs together. He’s got such a natural feeling for the music – amazing instincts and he’s always really in-the-moment. He brings a sense of unpredictability to this band – in the best kind of way.”

Also setting this album apart from many of its contemporaries is the setlist, which reflects the original trio name “Roots,” connecting Americana folk (Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land”, the Appalachian hymn “Amazing Grace”), traditional English balladry via modern American rock (“Scarborough Fair”), and American gospel (“I’ll Fly Away”) to classic bebop (Charlie Parker’s “Donna Lee”), pop (Lennon and McCartney’s “Blackbird”), alternative rock (Thom Yorke’s “Atoms for Peace”) and modern jazz (Dave Holland’s nod to Charles Mingus, “Blues for CM”); John provides one original track, the opening “Thaddeus.” This might seem to be a step back as Raymond’s first two recordings provided more original material. But, he says, “I thought, let’s just scrap the whole originals thing. Let’s play songs that people are familiar with, whether that’s folk songs or hymns or indie rock tunes, and incorporate some standards in there, too.”

And he is not concerned that much of the setlist comes from places other than jazz, noting that “the nature of the instrumentation, specifically flugelhorn and guitar, will lend a rootsy feel to things, for lack of a better word, so I’m not as concerned about squeezing the jazz out of it.” And the familiarity of most of the material has allowed the musicians to make a more direct connection with the audience. “I’ve really sensed a different connection with audiences when playing this music with this band,” says John. “It’s coming from such a genuine place for all of us that I think it really connects with people in a profound way. That’s precisely why I named the band Real Feels.”

Still, a “unique” project is only memorable if well executed, and here the trio shines brightly. Without piano or bass, the music has a raw edge, providing a fresh immediacy regardless of the tune’s origins in medieval England, Appalachia, bebop or contemporary rock. The one original, “Thaddeus,” opens the set, Raymond noting that his tribute to Thad Jones is “based on his song ‘Three and One,’ so it’s a contrafact.” Spare with wide spaces, flugelhorn harmonizes with guitar, drawing energy from the splatter-patter of Stranahan’s drums, the trio filling in spaces as they move along with some Monkish turns.

The traditional gospel hymn “I’ll Fly Away” gets a funky intro from Hekselman, feeling much like a march down Bourbon Street as it generates a lot of sound for three musicians. Hekselman particularly plays multiple roles, conjuring bass, banjo and guitar all at once, while Stranahan fills dual roles as well with bass drum/snare/cymbal action, and Raymond brings the flugelhorn to the higher end of sassy brass. In a different spiritual direction, “Amazing Grace” covers two tracks, the intro track a solo improv on flugelhorn that folds into a fairly straight reading before Hekselman’s long guitar solo, creating an exquisite country prayer. The flugelhorn returns with an unmistakable call to church as the guitar mimics the church organ.

On “Atoms for Peace,” Hekselman appears to be using a looper to maintain what sounds like a bass vamp throughout the track, while also drawing ethereal effects from the guitar. The trio thus sounds like a quartet or quintet; Raymond’s flugelhorn is elegant and haunting in the mode of modern European ensembles. Reaching back to Charlie Parker on “Donna Lee, the trio creates a sketchy, spartan feel to their conversation, particularly effective in the weaving of flugelhorn and guitar, maintaining the essence of Parker throughout their unique interpretation.

“Scarborough Fair” nods to both American folk-rock (Simon and Garfunkel) and the traditional English song, yet wrapped in a modern jazz feel. Again the pairings of lines and harmonic statements from flugelhorn and guitar, and the underlying pacing from Stranahan (especially from the toms and cymbals), yields glorious understatement. As if from the other side of the Earth, Dave Holland’s “Blues for CM” is given a swampy foundation via guitar and drums, like Mingus Meets Dave Torn.

The intro to “This Land Is Your Land” doesn’t give much hint of the tune. Raymond’s whiney flugel, followed by agile twists from Hekselman, does not suggest “Redwood Forests” but perhaps more “New York Island,” more rush hour traffic than majestic mountain trails! But the terrain is rugged and filled with ups and downs, twists and turns, and the final recall of the melody does indeed feel like home. The final track, “Blackbird” starts as a slow meander down a country lane or a float down a lazy stream. Graced by Stranahan’s fluttery brushes and cymbals, it’s sweeter, more nostaligic, than the original from Lennon and McCartney.

“I think it captures exactly who this band was at the time,” notes John. “It was pretty early on in the band’s existence that we recorded this music, and so in a lot of ways I feel like we’ve really evolved and deepened in our chemistry with one another since we recorded it. I also feel like my vision and concept for the group has really developed since then, too…” As for the next step in his evolution and vision, John says, “I actually feel like both this and my last record [Foreign Territory] were both in the ‘seed’ stage, and thus I’m sensing the need to continue to grow each of them. I have tentative plans to record again with Billy, Dan and Joe [Hart, Tepfer, Martin] for another quartet record in May, and I’d like to record Real Feels again, maybe later in the year or early in 2017. But I’m definitely going to keep focused on these two projects primarily and see where they lead artistically and otherwise.”

What unites these two directions is the creative searching of John Raymond as he moves from “foreign territory” into the music that feels “real” — ideas that have solid roots in the musical traditions of the distant past as well as the broadly defined present, and all that adds up to a very bright future.
