Daniel Erdmann & Stéphane Payen - Bricabracomaniacs (2021 Yolk Records)

This new collaboration allows the two saxophonists to polish their speech and create this duo recorded at the National Center for Musical Creation in Reims (Césaré). The repertoire mixes personal compositions and references to melodists who have marked their paths (J.S. Bach, Steve Argüelles, Doug Hammond ...). This selection reflects their bric-a-brac, a polymorphous landscape made of multiple insularities.

Daniel Erdmann and Stéphane Payen met in 2000 in Berlin during a jam session with guitarist/drummer John Schröder. But it’s only in 2012 that they first collaborated and formed Insel Musik (a quintet with Matyas Szandaï on doublebass, Rafaël Koerner and Julien Chamla on drumsets). In 2014, they also took part in the recording of the nonet lead by American saxophonist and composer Joe Rosenberg (together with Edward Perraud, Arnaud Cuisinier, Bruno Angelini, Robin Fincker ...).

In addition to this duo, Stéphane Payen currently performs with The Workshop, Thôt (whose return to the stage is imminent), Ingrid Laubrock, Guillaume Orti, Alban Darche's Orphicube, the Nautilis ensemble, etc... Daniel Erdmann currently performs with Velvet Revolution, Das Kapital, Vincent Courtois ... He received the European Musician of the Year 2019 award from the Académie du Jazz and is the winner of the SWR Jazzpreis 2020.

Daniel Erdmann / Christophe Marguet - Three Roads Home (DAS KAPITAL RECORDS March 30, 2018)

Free and open minds and quiet temperament, Daniel Erdmann (tenor saxophone) and Christophe Marguet (drums) have naturally found themselves in a face-to-face formula, in 2010 for fun and very seriously in 2012 to record the album "Together Together" published in 2014 (Abalone), one of our favorites that year. So we find them together, surrounded by two of their most faithful contrabassist friends: Henri Texier and Claude Tchamitchian. One or the other (in trio of this fact) or the two gathered in an unusual quartet with two double bass on three beaches while playing contrasts bow (Tchamitchian) vs pizzicato (Texier). The stunning compositions are signed Erdmann and Marguet but also Tchamitchian (The Shadow of Water) and Texier with one of his "tubes" in the form of a slogan (Do not buy Ivory, anymore). Its full and suave tenor saxophone by Daniel Erdmann on a very natural phrasing, finesse and subtlety of Christophe Marguet's colorful drum playing, limpid beat of Henri Texier's double bass, Claude Tchamitchian's rich sound palette ... A combination of qualities that make this record a cheering success.

Vincent Courtois / Daniel Erdmann / Robin Fincker - Bandes Originales (LA BUISSONNE 2017)

This is not a film score album. Not even an album with cover versions. Not at all. On the contrary, it is a journey, a sort of free and rigorous wandering in a world which is both alien and familiar to us. So, could it be Cinema? Yes, no doubt about it... But Cinema which has been remembered, revisited, rephrased.

With recurring themes, bringing forth secret sensations coming from a distant inside. Hiroshima my Love, Bright Sun , E .T., The Thomas Crown Affair, All the Mornings of the World, The Red Ball, The Green Ray, Take The Money and Run, Sleeping Paris, films from everywhere and elsewhere...Anything but a Pantheon, but rather the result of a swaying dreamy meditation. So films, revisited and corrected by a trio with unique sounds. A cello (Vincent Courtois), two saxophones (Daniel Erdmann, Robin Finckler), three reasons to be seeped in this intimate round dance, apparently austere but, in reality, shimmering and glimmering. No fad. No dramatic flourishes.

No opportunism. Just unreleased sounds. A music that recreates itself in our ears and recalls memories, in the present time, without nostalgia. So listen to Giovanni Fusco, Nino Rota, Michel Legrand, John Williams, Marin Marais, Marvin Hamlisch in their new attire. Get on board with the Courtois / Erdmann / Fincker trio . They love cinema, music, history, geography, adventure ... You are bound to love them !
