Algorhythm - Mandala (ALPAKA RECORDS 2017)

One can grasp "Mandala" from many perspectives - first, as music from the heart and as flow. But beyond these concepts we all naturally understand, it can also be grasped on a higher level of complexity, via intellect and under a microscope. One could then notice layers of detail, rhythmic and harmonic textures, various percolating genres and free improv expression.

The album is the product of the cumulative experience of the musicians that comprise Algorhythm. Musicians whose roots stem from work with well known performers such as Leszek Możdżer, Tymon Tymański and Sławek Jaskułke - as well as committed work on their own projects. “Mandala” is therefore the product of musical, as well as personal explorations of the collective’s members.

The album’s title is tied to the tibetan monks’ tradition of mandalas - layered, gossamer designs of colored sand, cast on a circle within a square. Their subsequent destruction is meant to remind one of the ever-changing nature of things. In this way, the band indicates their readiness for change, the destruction of their own efforts to build compositions.

“Mandala” is the fruit of a winter recording session in “Monochrom” studio located in wilderness among mountains. It was mixed at “Bass Hit” Studio in New York City by Grammy winning engineer Dave Darlington (Wayne Shorter’s “Alegria”, Madonna’s “Erotica”).

Algorhythm - Segments (2015)

Label: Self Released

The band Algorhythm is a fresh breeze on the Polish music scene. Thanks to the cooperation of the five artistically different individuals, in January 2013, the multifarious musical project that oscillates between melancholy and impulsiveness, musical geometry and spontaneous abstraction, came into existence. In their compositions, Algorhythm explores areas of contemporary music with the sound of jazz quintet.

"This is the debut album by the young Polish Jazz quintet Algorhythm, which comprises of trumpeter Emil Miszk, saxophonist Piotr Checki, pianist Szymon Burnos, bassist Krzysztof Slomkowski and drummer Sławek Koryzno. It presents seven original compositions, five by Burnos and two by Miszk.
The classic Jazz quintet setting and the music are all well within the mainstream Jazz tradition, presenting modern, vital and interesting European version of the standard Jazz idiom, as usual drenched in the Polish lyricism and melancholy, which characterizes Polish Jazz. The compositions are well rounded and definitely non-trivial, with many odd rhythmic patterns; with altogether create an interesting listening experience. Personally I think the two compositions by Miszk are the best on the album, but the ones by Burnos do not fall far behind. The dynamic development and atmosphere of these pieces is quite remarkable.
All three soloists perform splendidly and play several impressive passages and the rhythm section does a superb job supporting them all the way through, handling the complex rhythms elegantly and flawlessly. Again Checki seems to be the most impressive soloist on this album, but his colleagues are all gifted musicians and in time are sure to join the ranks of top Polish Jazz players.
This is definitely an impressive debut, which deserves praise and support and as always makes me wonder how such young people are able to produce such mature and well developed music. Well done indeed!"
