Michel Portal - Alors !​!​! (September 10, 2021 souffle continu records)

Could the missing link between Eric Dolphy and Albert Ayler be the Michel Portal of 1970? After having worked alongside François Tusques defending a free jazz “made in France”, we find him here, heading up an international quintet of which each member is on fire: John Surman, Barre Phillips, Stu Martin and Jean-Pierre Drouet. The quintet had full leeway to break out the free-form in long ambient tracks to compose this Alors!!! which leaves listeners with just one word to say: More!

Do we still need to present Michel Portal?... Clarinetist destined for the classical and contemporary world after his passage in the Paris Conservatory, he decided to try his hand at jazz, with an incendiary flamboyance! After his first experience with André Hodeir and Pierre Michelot, he would break all the codes with François Tusques (Free Jazz, in 1965) before starting the emblematic Michel Portal Unit. It is the Portal of those years that Alors!!! offers us the chance to listen to again.

“There are periods of insolence”, the musician declared and the year 1970 was one all on its own. Heading up an impetuous international troupe, a quintet consisting of John Surman (saxophones, bass clarinet), Barre Phillips (double-bass), Stu Martin (drums) and Jean-Pierre Drouet (percussion), Portal moves from alto sax to clarinet in the compositions shared with his partners.

From the off, the group sparks an explosion with the sound of “OO Bam Ba Deep” battered by the horns and percussion. Next up is the fabulous free jazz of “Yes, Oh Yes, You Wonderous Sun Kissed Maiden!” and the fantastic disjointed march of “Ça Boom?” which shakes up the musicians every which way. The quintet imagined that listeners would need to catch their breath, and thoughtfully added: “Billie the Kid” and “Undercurrent”, marvelous moments of ambient mystery.

Audacious from beginning to end, including the sleeve – the bird-man and his quintet brain designed by Avoine, –, the album is a fabulous object, to which the label Futura gave wings at the time. And as it is being reissued today there is just one word to use: the French translation of the title, So!!!

A l’occasion de ses 85 ans, Michel Portal rompt un silence discographique de 10 ans (Baïlador, 2011) avec « MP85 »

Tout nouveau disque de Michel Portal est, en soi, un événement. Certains, plus que d’autres… Ainsi “MP85”. D’abord, parce qu’il vient rompre, avec éclat(s), un trop long silence, ensuite parce qu’il célèbre les grandes retrouvailles du musicien avec Label Bleu - 23 ans après que “Dockings” ait clôturé en beauté une collaboration féconde qui tout au long des années 90 aura donné naissance à quelques oeuvres clés de sa discographie ! Enfin (et surtout !) parce qu’à 85 ans, tout à la fois monstre sacré incontesté de la scène jazz européenne et éternel électron libre, Michel Portal, soucieux de ne jamais “se fixer” une fois pour toute dans un style ou dans un genre, signe avec ce disque joyeux et iconoclaste l’exact opposé de l’oeuvre testamentaire que d’aucuns escompteraient de lui à cet instant de sa carrière!

Porté par l’énergie d’un nouveau groupe entremêlant allégrement générations et traditions musicales, Michel Portal, loin de mettre au propre pour la postérité quelques “moments choisis” d’une vie dédiée corps et âme à la musique, poursuit avec “MP85” cette quête existentielle et artistique qui depuis plus de 60 ans le pousse à se remettre chaque fois “en jeu” et en mouvement. Délicieusement inclassable — lyrique, virtuose, spontanée et sophistiquée —, cette musique de l’instant présent, d’une totale liberté et définitivement affranchie de toute notion d’avant-garde et de classicisme, prend une nouvelle fois la tangente ! Avec une irrévérence juvénile irrésistible!

Parisien’s “Sfumato” concert at Jazz in Marciac on 8 August 2017 was unforgettable and has been captured for ever on both CD & DVD. His quintet was augmented at this concert by illustrious guests: US trumpet star Wynton Marsalis, French jazz legend Michel Portal and Parisien’s alter ego and long-established duo partner Vincent Peirani. Multi-layered, innovative and experimental, “Sfumato live in Marciac” is packed full of tension, excitement and turbulence. Henri Texier - Concert anniversaire 30 ans de Label Bleu (2017)

Voilà un album exceptionnel, sorti à l’occasion du concert anniversaire des 30 ans du label amiénois. Afin de fêter dignement cette date, le label proposait une carte blanche à ce musicien fidèle entre tous qui a enregistré une vingtaine d’albums sur label Bleu, à savoir le contrebassiste Henri TEXIER. Pour la circonstance, il était accompagné de quelques amis du jazz européen, de vieux compagnons de route comme Michel Portal, Bojan Z. mais aussi d’improvisateurs qui ont contribué plus récemment à l’histoire du label, comme Xavier de Pourquery. Sans oublier les talentueux Manu Codjia, Edward Perraud qui contribuent à leur façon à renouveler, prolonger l’esprit de ce label hexagonal si original.

Un sextet de charme, chic mais choc, pour célébrer ce label créé par Michel Orier, qui fut la vitrine du jazz français et européen, s’ouvrit également aux musiques world avec la collection Indigo, avant de connaître de sérieuses difficultés financières. Mais fort heureusement, le label a redémarré, sous la direction artistique de Gilbert Fillinger et Benoît Delaquaize, proposant même actuellement un coffret de 10 LP, et profitant de Tendance Jazz, deuxième édition d’un festival lié à la Maison de la Culture d’Amiens. Inauguré par André Malraux, premier ministre de la culture, il y a juste 50 ans, elle appartient à ces créations de maisons de la culture qui fleurirent alors comme de nouvelles cathédrales, disait-on, propagèrent des formes artistiques diverses, danse, théâtre musiques…

L’album que l’on présente ici correspond au deuxième set du concert singulier et unique du 3 mars 2016. Enregistré live, mixé et masterisé par Philippe Teissier du Cros, il représente un document sonore de 7 titres sélectionnés avec soin qui retracent l’histoire récente de cette musique aimée. On ouvre l’album de souvenirs et on réécoute certains titres qui furent des tubes du contrebassiste breton au bonnet rond : ça démarre avec « Colonel Skopje »(1988) de l’album culte éponyme où le Français était accompagné -excusez du peu de Joe Lovano, John Abercrombie, Steve Swallow et Aldo Romano. Ajoutons un autre grand succès « Desaparecido » dédié aux femmes d’Argentine, titre que l’on retrouve sur un album formidable, An Indian’s Week que j’ai écouté en boucle à l’époque (1993) avec cet Azur quartet composé de Bojan Z, Tony Rabeson, Glenn Ferris et en guests Michel Portal et Louis Sclavis. Pouvait-on rêver de meilleur attelage pour conduire cette musique fièvreuse, vibrante, voyageuse, aventureuse?

C’est que, tout au long de sa carrière, Henri Texier n’a cessé de créer des groupes différents, incorporant de nouveaux talents, faisant ainsi de belles rencontres musicales : le NORD SUD quintet, le STRADA sextet, actuellement le SKY DANCERS Sextet. Il a fait la musique de Holy Lola (2004) film de Bertrand Tavernier qui s’y connaît aussi en jazz : sur « Y’a des vautours au Cambodge » ? on entend Michel Portal au bandonéon, et Texier nous gratifie d’un solo émouvant. On aime aussi le « Barth’s groove » de 2002 de Strings’ spirit, avec le chef d’un bel ONJ, le guitariste Claude Barthélémy.

On l’aura compris, écouter cet album « compil » est un régal de nostalgie qui souligne les qualités de ce contrebassiste impressionnant, chef de troupe, découvreur de talents, qui a toujours su s’entourer, un mélodiste inné maîtrisant timbres et sonorités de l’idiome jazz.

Among jazz fans, you can have a lot of fun arguing whether “European Jazz” is a useful counterpoint to the American tradition, an original supplement thereto or “is worth less than American jazz on the market” as it can be read in a Wikipedia forum. There is no doubt that there have been and are gifted musicians this side of the Atlantic, who have molded and formed jazz for decades. They have developed very unique playing styles by merging European music traditions with American influences. To give these pioneers of European jazz a stage was the idea for the series of articles “European Jazz Legends”, which has been launched in the magazine Jazz thing in their 100th issue in September 2013. We can now look back on 16 issues. The symbolic stage has now become a real one, and it is in Gutersloh in the middle of Europe. Accompanying each edition of the magazine appearing five times a year, a concert planned especially for this occasion is being organized in cooperation with the label Intuition, the city of Gütersloh and Westdeutscher Rundfunk Köln with current protagonists of the series, hosted by our author Götz Bühler. Each concert including an interview with the artist will be broadcast by Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR 3) at a later time, and the musical highlights of the concert will be released on a CD.

In other words, five concerts and five CDs in the series “European Jazz Legends” are planned for each year in the future, until end of 2017. In addition, a book will be published, in 2018, for which the article from the magazine will be revised and supplemented, among other things, to provide impressions from the concerts and discussions. The CD of Michel Portal is the seventh publication in the “European Jazz Legends” series. „Just because I play Brahms, does not mean that I forget about Charlie Parker“, Michel Portal said during his interview for the portrait series European Jazz Legends for Jazz thing in Paris in the winter of 2015. A „proud Eurojazzer“ (New York Times) and „a solitaire of experimental Jazz“ (Die Zeit), Michel Portal is certainly and comfortably at home in many musical worlds. 

The multi-instrumentalist from Bayonne, who had turned eighty just a few days before the interview, masters various clarinets and saxophones as well as the bandoneon, and is also recognized as a composer. His wit and wisdom, and the youthful energy and curiosity he brings to his astonishing improvisations are only some of the reasons Portal has enjoyed such a fruitful and enduring career. Having helped to kick start the Free Jazz movement in France in the Sixties, he went on to form „New Phonic Art“ to encourage collective improvisation and instant composing. After a rewarding collaboration with John Surman in 1970, Portal founded the long-lived Michel Portal Unit the following year, in order to encourage American and European musicians to play together in a freely improvised setting. 

Portal began composing music for soundtracks in the mid-1970s and later recorded an album of some of his favorite movie melodies called „Musiques de Cinémas“. During the following decades Portal increased his international reputation with various bands, concerts and recordings, often playing with Pierre Favre, Dave Liebman, Martial Solal, Mino Cinelu and Jack DeJohnette, but also with musicians from Minneapolis, MN.

Michel Portal“s extended improvisations with the American pianist Richie Beirach were recorded for this CD on March 5th 2016 during a concert in the Theater Gütersloh and mark the first time these musicians ever played together - together with the recordings with the WDR Bigband they are further proof of the universality of the musical language called Jazz and the fascinating and infectious vitality of improvisation. „I love to play in front of an audience“, Portal said. „It is like a metamorphosis. I feel bad, if I haven´t played live for two weeks. But after a concert it is as if I´ve just taken a ton of Aspirin.“
