Matías Formica Tríos - Hastío y Paranoia (November 26, 2021 Numeral)

About “Hastío y Paranoia”:

𝕀𝕟𝕖𝕩𝕠𝕣𝕒𝕓𝕝𝕖 𝕒𝕔𝕖𝕔𝕙𝕒 𝕖𝕝 á𝕟𝕚𝕞𝕒, 𝕠𝕓𝕤𝕖𝕣𝕧𝕒, 𝕒𝕝𝕦𝕔𝕚𝕟𝕒.

𝔼𝕟𝕥𝕣𝕖 𝕤í 𝕝𝕠 𝕚𝕣𝕣𝕖𝕒𝕝, 𝕝𝕒 𝕕𝕚𝕤𝕣𝕦𝕡𝕔𝕚ó𝕟.

𝕀𝕟𝕗𝕒𝕦𝕤𝕥𝕠, 𝕞𝕒𝕝𝕖𝕒𝕓𝕝𝕖, 𝕡𝕖𝕣𝕠 𝕕𝕖𝕝 𝕝𝕒𝕕𝕠 𝕕𝕖 𝕒𝕥𝕣á𝕤, 𝕡𝕣𝕠𝕪𝕖𝕔𝕥𝕒.

This project arises from the impulse of having made the album "AISLADOS" in the first part of the year, an album in duet with Jonatan Schenone, with my own compositions and improvisations. Which left me wanting to experiment more fully with free improvisation, but this time with the challenge of inviting different musicians, and doing totally improvised sessions. Some of them are great and admired friends, others, musicians that I admire and to whom I was encouraged to invite them to join this album.

This project consisted of six recording sessions, each lasting an hour on average, of which I selected two pieces from each session. The idea was to have different formations with varied instrumentations, to generate different timbricall experiences, all trio formations where even I played different instruments, two sessions with tenor sax, two with alto sax, one with flute and one with alto flute, always thinking different instrumental combinations, but at the same time taking into account the different ways of approaching improvisation that each improviser has. At the same time I could classify the pieces into acoustic and electroacoustic.

The criteria for selecting and assembling the album, I tried to make the total tell a story, that each piece was part of the whole. The first selection criterion was that in each song the trio sound prevails, although some tracks begin with a solo instrument, the general development occurs with the sound of the ensemble. The second criterion was to generate an album and not a compilation, with which the selection was to try to make the pieces combine with each other and with the total, trying to generate an album concept. The result in my opinion is as it usually happens, an intermediate point, there are very varied pieces conceptually speaking if we take them individually, but if they are heard in order, I think they combine perfectly.

This project was a challenge, since there were musicians with whom I had never played, and at the same time several of them, did not know each other or had never played with each other, with which each session had an adaptation period, but paradoxically some of the more interesting pieces were the first ones, perhaps because of the surprise when they started playing. Personally, although I am fascinated with the result of the album, it was a great excuse to be able to continue “studying” free improvisation which, in my opinion, is done playing and due to the harsh conditions of the environment in which we live, sometimes it is difficult to do it assiduously.

Pedway - Vitalic (November 2, 2021 Ears & Eyes Records)

Pedway was born in Chicago in 2006 when its members first became regular collaborators in the Chicago jazz scene. Caroline Davis (alto saxophone), Matthew Golombisky (acoustic/electric bass), and Quin Kirchner (drums) decided to form a trio that would only perform completely improvised sets. While sometimes bending towards abstraction, they chose to also remain firmly rooted in rhythm, melody & harmony. Throughout the 15 years that have followed, and even after Caroline & Matthew left Chicago for New York & Buenos Aires respectively, the members of Pedway have continually managed to reconvene from time to time to pick up where they left off.

August 2017 was the last such occasion, manifesting in shows in Chicago at Logan Square establishments The Whistler and Cafe Mustache. Culled from the 3 hours of recorded material those performances produced, Vitalic is a window into the aural communication these players have developed over time. Their 3rd full-length album once again blends elements of rock, jazz, minimalism and abstract expressionism together to form a unique take on the classic sax trio sound. While no two Pedway performances are alike, the musical rapport among its members is always evident and represents the through-line connecting all their work. Vitalic is available both digitally and as a super-limited 12" LP on ears&eyes Records.

Matthew Golombisky's Cuentos Volume 4 (August 2021 Ears & Eyes Records)

Matthew Golombisky's Cuentos is an ongoing project of composing, recording, and releasing music with trusted bandmates from around the globe and become inspired by and with close music cohorts. With Cuentos, Golombisky composes simple aural "plots" with a couple or few "characters" for each story. The cuentos are meant to humbly encourage that the music that comes forth stays within the realm of a short story format and doesn't develop into a full novel, so to speak; they aren't meant to convey visual or physical plots, characters, or scenes. Preferring not to interfere with the listener’s own experience of the music, Golombisky did not name the pieces; they are simply numbered in the order composed (six cuentos per volume).

The structures are meant to be simple and showcase the improvisational precision of each performer on conveying a modest concept with fluidity, clarity, and focus. What the listener is left with is an introspection into a single objective that comfortably emerges over the course of the piece, leaving them with a comprehensible aural encounter. Even the lengths of the pieces represent a briefness, here and gone before a single musician is able to explore every possibility of the story; Golombisky’s intention. Most pieces range in three minutes length--single ideas presented, explored, and left to the listener for reflection.

Matthew Golombisky's Cuentos - Volume 3 (EARS&EYES RECORDS November 16, 2018)

Matthew Golombisky’s Cuentos represent the compositional culmination of his experiences living in cities throughout the world. His experiences of the musical and cultural environments of each city awaken different directions for inspiration to be opened and explored as short stories in the form of simplistic soundscapes. These Cuentos (the Spanish word for ‘short stories’) are an ongoing project in which Golombisky works with close musical cohorts from each city to convey the stories of a unique musical geography. The first release (September 2017) showcased in-depth explorations of musical friendships developed in both Oakland (Volume 1), where he lived for one year, and Chicago (Volume 2) where he lived for more than three years.

In this third volume, he has returned to Chicago to work with a longtime collaborator, drummer Quin Kirchner, which marks the first volume with drum set. Quin and Matthew have been working together in various groups, ranging from rock/pop to straight-ahead, chamber, electro and free jazz formats since meeting in New Orleans 17 years ago. After working together for several years in New Orleans and after the devastating Hurricane Katrina, they were able to continue their work together in Chicago until Golombisky moved to Buenos Aires after stints in Rochester NY and Oakland CA. They continue their music with free jazz trio Pedway (with Caroline Davis) and the occasionally re-emergence of Golombisky’s Tomorrow Music Orchestra.

Each of the Cuentos is concise, intentional aural plots utilizing a group of trusted musicians. The compositional structures are meant to be simple, and showcase the improvisational precision (not virtuosity) of each performer, conveying a modest concept with fluidity, clarity, and focus. (Usually,) even the lengths of the pieces represent a conceptual modesty. Most pieces range from three to six minutes in length; single ideas presented, explored, and left to the listener for reflection. The Cuentos are here and gone before a single musician is able to explore every possibility of the story. The mood of each piece can vary, but usually remains with one singular musical gesture, goal, or feel. In this way, they humbly encourage that the music stays within the realm of a short story format, and doesn't develop into a full novel (so to speak).
