Two years after the acclaimed live album Zurich Concert, which featured trumpeter Jamie Branch, the Dave Gisler trio adds another guest for a studio album – the giant of modern jazz – David Murray. Just as the trio immediately hit it off with Branch, Murray is furiously integrated into the band's punchy music, with the presence of both the trumpeter and tenor saxophonist opening up the group's sound. the resulting body of sound, propelled by punkish energy and the driving force of rock, the free-form aesthetics of the sixties and the cadences of modern jazz, navigates into open musical realms. "But there’s no doubt that as Branch’s final note resounds, Gisler and his collaborators will soldier on driven by a need to make music together," writes Peter Margasak in the liner notes.

Sarah Buechi Contradiction of Happiness & Jena Philharmonic - The Paintress (August 20, 2021 INTAKT RECORDS)

They’ve taken to the skies – the chamber orchestra and the septet of Sarah Buechi – masterfully beyond all categorisation. The singer’s septet Contradiction of Happiness with piano, bass, drums and three string players is in itself already something of a polyphonic and liberated orchestra. Sarah Buechi has expanded this ensemble with the chamber orchestra of the Jena Philharmonic. The success of the first performance was overwhelming and the recordings on this album, which also took place in Jena, enable one to experience and relive the playful ease with which this ambitious project was accomplished. Classical intonation, Jazz vocalisations, chanting, microtones reminiscent of Indian music and Konnakol, rhythmic vocalisation – all these elements exist companionably in the compositions. "A music full of the joy of understanding," writes German jazz journalist Bert Noglik in the liner notes, "of the flapping of the wings of the poetic in the joint flight of the septet and the orchestra."

Over the past few years Dave Gisler has earned himself an

impressive reputation in the free-thinking force field of contemporary

jazz as a maverick sound architect on the electric guitar. with

Lionel Friedli, the impulsive style-busting force of nature on the

drums, and the agile bassist Raffaele Bossard, with his earthy tone,

Gisler brought two of the most sought after musicians on the Swiss

jazz scene. Since 2016 these three fans of choice yet rough-edged

musicianship have been navigating their ship through open musical

seas with punky energy, the driving power of indie rock, the free

aesthetic of the 1960s and the cadences of modern jazz.

The debut album, Rabbits on the Run, is a stock-take of the moment,

a shimmering array of this genre-busting trio’s potential. without

falling into superficial musical eclecticism, the trio celebrate stylistic

diversity, orientating themselves on factors independent of style,

such as intensity, contrast or energy. Rabbits on the Run; in flight

the rabbit leaps sideways. And it is surprising changes of direction

and atmospheric turning points which characterise our trip through

the all-encompassing sonic cosmos of this promising trio.

Sarah Buechi - Contradiction of Happiness (INTAKT RECORDS 2108)

After Flying Letters and Shadow Garden, Sarah Buechi is releasing her third album on Intakt Records, Contradiction of Happiness. She has seized the opportunity to take her music in a new direction, and has augmented her superb quartet – with pianist Stefan Aeby, bassist André Pousaz and drummer Lionel Friedli – with the addition of three string players. 

"The results are extremely convincing." writes Manfred Papst in the liner notes. "She demonstrates once again that her compositions are far more than run-of-the mill songs with verses, rhymes and a chorus. They are ingeniously structured mini-dramas in which complex stories are told in a confined space. They are poetically dense, with vocal beauty and an enormous spectrum of expression. Their music is sophisticated, thoughtful, but also very sensual. The wonderful ‘After We’ve Kissed’ on the new album is the best example of this.“

Nicolas Masson / Colin Vallon / Patrice Moret / Lionel Friedli - Travelers (ECM February 16, 2018)

After two ECM albums with the cooperative trio Third Reel, Swiss reedman Nicolas Masson presents a quartet for which he is the sole composer. The group has existed for a decade with unchanged personnel, touring as Nicolas Massons Parallels, and the leaders writing for it always encourages creative responses from the players. Amid the changing musical landscapes in which these travelers move, you will encounter some of Colin Vallons prettiest ballad playing, richly melodic bass from Patrice Moret, and subtle drum commentary from Lionel Friedli. Plus, of course, plenty of Massons pure-toned saxophone and elegant clarinet. Travelers was recorded at Auditorio Stelio Molo in Lugano in April 2017, and produced by Manfred Eicher.
