Carn Davidson 9 - The History of Us (Three Pines Records)

The Carn Davidson 9 (CD9) was formed in early 2010 as a collaborative project between JUNO Award-winning artists, trombonist William Carn and saxophonist Tara Davidson. CD9 is a 9-piece chordless ensemble that utilizes its seven horns as melodic, harmonic and rhythmic devices, anchored by bass and drums. This coled ensemble presents an opportunity for both artists to craft compositions for a unique chamber jazz instrumentation, and for a formidable collection of guest arrangers to shine new light on existing repertoire by Carn and Davidson.

The Carn Davidson 9’s unique sound is made stronger by an all-star lineup of prominent Canadian artists, all of whom are exceptional ensemble players in addition to being outstanding soloists. CD9 has produced two previous recordings: their debut album “Nine” was released in 2012, and was followed by “Murphy” in 2017. Both recordings garnered JUNO nominations for Jazz Album of the Year.

The History of Us is the Carn Davidson 9’s third studio recording, and is their most personal project to date. Comprised of two three-movement suites, The History of Us is a powerful, moving meditation on the universal themes of family, migration, and loss.

It has been said that a musician should “tell a story” when they play and storytelling, at its core, is really all about relationships. How characters interact, how they grow or change, and how the audience relates to, responds to or empathizes with those characters is essential. It is the relationships that bring meaning: to the story, its characters, its audience, its author. That is why Kinship is at the heart of this album; it tells the story of the relationships and experiences that inform the artist and bring meaning to the music.

Kinship is the debut solo release from Toronto- based trumpet player John Pittman (The Heavyweights Brass Band, Composer’s Collective Big Band), and features a stellar cast of musicians that were chosen in keeping with the overarching narrative of this record. Shirantha Beddage, Jeff McLeod, Mike Downes and Curtis Nowosad all share a history and a connection with John and, while they are all musical giants individually, their collective studio chemistry is palpable on this release.

Kinship is the story of the people and experiences that make us who we are; that which brings meaning to our narrative and communicates what matters most to us. Here’s hoping you find kinship with the artists through your experience of the music.

Shirantha Beddage - Momentum (2016)

Following the success of his JUNO-nominated album Identity, baritone saxophonist Shirantha Beddage continues to deliver his brand of high-octane modern jazz on the new album, Momentum, featuring Will Kennedy of the Yellowjackets. 

For this new album, his third as a leader, his compositions reflect his childhood fascination with the physical sciences, as he explores the tension between oppositional forces in music and the world around us. 

The music is drawn from Beddage’s most diverse range of influences thus far, including New Orleans jazz, R&B, film music and folk songs, providing a musical landscape that is accessible, varied and complex.

It’s almost here!  My new album, Momentum, will be released worldwide on September 9, 2016.  The release of this album will be followed by several concerts in the Toronto area, with special guest Will Kennedy of the Yellowjackets.
