Peeter Uuskyla / Tellef Øgrim / Anders Berg / Harri Sjöström - Tlaxkon / Soft City / Have a Drink, Have a Drive (December 2021 Simlas produksjoner)

This quartet's music is an oblique and deconstructed but red-hot mix of jazz, rock, and several other styles in between. It's taut and metallic, sprung, flexed and twisted, hitting hard on the recoil.

NOTE ...
This is part of the second set recorded live at Kafé Hærverk, the entire first set has been released as an album on JAZZTRAU

Per Anders Nilsson - Re-Cycling (September 10, 2021 Simlas Produksjoner)

Archipelago of Sounds: Re-cycling

This album consists of recordings that spans over almost forty years. What unifies however, is that the entire material consists of solo saxophone and live electronics. Its title Re-cycling entails re-use of existing material, which it is, as it contains surplus material from my solo record Random Rhapsody from 1993. The island pieces series are part of an on-going recording project called Archipelago of Sounds, which is about creating musical works that on the one hand display coherent sounding music, and on the other should individual pieces show a unique sonic identity.

The oldest part, the furious walking bass accompaniment in Re-cycling, was recorded in the early 80s on a Buchla modular synthesizer at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm. Whereas the rest of the electronic background was made in an Akai S1000 sampler and a Mac sequencer, whilst the saxophone overdub and mixing were made in 1988. Moreover, Autre Cap was originally a commission for the ICMC in Aarhus in 1994, based on a patch made with the Max software that featured score following techniques invented at IRCAM in Paris, which in turn triggered pre-recorded soprano saxophone samples.

The remaining pieces were recorded in 2020 and 2021, where the author plays alto saxophone together with different patches on a Bug Brand modular synthesizer, except Looper Islands that uses an old, and re-cycled Max/MSP patch, and Whereabouts which features an Octatrack sequencer/sampler.

Lars Larsson / Peeter Uuskyla - Bark at Themselves (August 4, 2021 Simlas Produksjoner)

The remaining audience is a handful of listeners who think it's fun with live music in general. The atmosphere will be relaxed and pleasant, after the gig you can eat a muffin and talk to the musicians. Peeter Uuskyla told about coincidences that brought him and Peter Brötzmann to Mexico City and a ten-day gig with local musicians.

Or collaboration with Mikolaj Trzaska in Gdansk. And then he remembered the quote from Povel Ramel - "coffee with bop". Lars Larsson had been to Eksjö before, played on the city party's big stage with Caroline af Ugglas. The live market in general was quite gloomy. Playing was possible. Getting paid was harder!

The music on Monday was a long improvisation that always remained within the "imaginative" subdivision of free improvisation. Larsson tore up and sang with various melody fragments in a still cohesive and meaningful way. Uuskyla kept a few different rhythmic figures going in parallel with a great freedom of expression. Dynamic and responsive interaction!

A pleasant experience, both musically and socially! - Jan Strand / Orkesterjournalen

Musiconspiracy - Do I The In? (2021 Simlas Produksjoner)

«This was recorded live at Alchemia in Cracow in September of 2007 and has excellent sound. I had not heard of Polish drum wiz, Jacek Kochan, before we got a half dozen discs of his from Not Two & Gowi. After reviewing a few of them I was impressed with his playing, arranging and the varied personnel on each disc. This new disc also has an inspired line-up of musicians from Austria (FH), Norway (TO), Poland (JK) and the US (JF). Each player has contributed two pieces as well as three great groups improvisations. Starting with Joe Fonda's "Song for My Mother", the rhythm team hits their stride quickly with some twisted fretless guitar and Miles-like electric trumpet upfront.

What is great here is how well the guitar and electric trumpet play together and sound similar. On "Golden Angel", the bowed bass, el. guitar and mutant trumpet seem to complete each other's line as they swerve around one another and bend their notes close. The band swings hard on "Feed the Hamster" with Franz taking that great Electric Miles-like tone and squeezing it higher. The ever-incredible Joe Fonda sounds splendid throughout as his bass buzzes underneath all of the action, creating a tight connection with Jacek's uplifting drums.

All four of these musicians are play wonderfully throughout, exchanging ideas, tossing riffs back and forth and consistently surprising us with their tight, interconnected tapestry. Another outstanding disc from the folks at Not Two.» (Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery)

Tors Hammare / Thors Hammer - Art species and other creatures (2021 Simlas Produksjoner)

About 35 years ago, the group Tors Hammare/Thor's Hammer was formed. It is a constellation that has fanatically clung to the premise that the music of the collective is more important than its combined components. Everyone or no-one is the soloist.

Jonny Wartel and Lars Larsson - woodwinds
Gunnar Backman - fretted and fretless guitar, banjo, live loops and samples
Pål Christensson - double bass
Henrik Wartel on drums

They excavate, in the cellars of their minds, a music that is curious and experimental. This music uses the breadth and width of tonality, timbre, and their special "cupboard" of sounds.

"Melancholic without any categorical statements. The intensity is below the surface. it invites one to listen without pre-judgement."

"This is gifted music that communicates with its audiences and is filled with joy and musicality. The musicians seem to have total control over their means of expression."

Uuskyla / Øgrim / Berg - LAIV (SIMLAS PRODUKSJONER)

Eleven months after the debut ULLR, Uuskyla Øgrim & Berg releases LAIV

When you have struck a rich ore, you should keep on digging. That goes for gold hunters as well as musicians.

It has been only 11 months since Anders Berg and Tellef Øgrim teamed up with veteran free-jazz drummer Peeter Uuskyla to put out the debut album ULLR.

The collection of six short, hard-hitting tracks got the attention from the impro press, resulting in statements as:

– Ullr is an engaging, captivating, and often unrivalled listen.
– This is very personal music, which captivates both the brain, heart and feet.
– Uuskyla’s trio is taut and metallic, sprung, flexed and sinuous, hitting hard on the recoil.

Several months after ULLR, Tellef was contacted by BrÖtz (brotznow.se) in Gothenburg. The dry message was that the caller had taken over the booking of the club and that he had a list from the previous booking person in front of him saying that the club owed Tellef a gig.

Tellef’s answer to the club’s question about who he would like to bring along was of course that he wanted to come with Peeter Uuskyla and Anders Berg.

All three had played several times at BrÖtz, but never together as a trio.

Winding fast forward to 11 October 2017 when the three musicians got together physically, first in a pasta place at Skånegatan, later listening to records in Uuskyla’s apartment for a couple of hours, and, at last, walking on-stage at BrÖtz around 10 in the evening, following a great debut concert from the band Musikerförbundet.

Two amplifiers were moved, drums were slightly adjusted, and the floodgates could be opened.

No rehearsal or sound check took place. No discussion about what to play.

What followed on stage reflected the urge of the three musicians to finally get together and play.

The 45 minutes tour-de-force can be enjoyed in its entirety at the record LAIV, released by Simlas produksjoner at simlas.bandcamp.com (and elsewhere digitally) on November 25.

Henrik Wartel & Jonny Wartel - HoJ (Simlas produksjoner 2017)

Simlas produksjoner is an open minded record label based in Norway and Sweden with a leaning towards improvised music. Besides building up our own unique catalogue of first-time releases we also re-release a selection of earlier released albums. Simlas is maintained by Anders Berg, Funäsdalen, Sweden and Tellef Øgrim, Oslo, Norway.

HoJ was formed on February 4, 1959, when Jonny was born and Henrik's two year solo project was completed. Since then, the two musicians have collaborated in a variety of constellations, such as Tajphoon Tivoli and Position Alpha - two almost cult groups active in Gothenburg in the 1980s. Right now they are also together in the Jonny Wartel 4th and Urgent Call groups. The music is spontaneous and true.

Lars Larsson / Peeter Uuskyla / Niclas Rydh / David Bäck - pensive±influx (Simlas produksjoner 2017)

My old friend Anders Berg called me on the phone one day. We talked for an hour about dogs, friends, the weather, and work. During the conversation, he mentioned a recording of mine done at the Gothenburg Museum of Art back in 2010 that I had not listened to for many years.

It was the fine acoustics of the exhibition hall, the great piano and the inspiring surrounding art pieces (by among others Francis Bacon and Andy Warhol) that had created the idea of organizing a number of concerts at the museum.

I gathered a number of guest soloists around a trio called Riverrun that I, pianist/singer David Bäck, and Peeter Uuskyla operated. During the autumn of 2010 and the spring of 2011, we played eight concerts with great musicians as trombone player Niclas Rydh, bassist Nina de Heney, sax players Jonny Wartel and Biggi Vinkeloe, trumpeter Mike Lloyd, and pianist Matti Ollikainen.

Most of the concerts were recorded, and all of them contained unique stretches of completely improvised music.

Afterward, the concert that I listened most to was the one with Rydh, Uuskyla, Bäck.

Therefore it made me very happy that Simlas would release that specific recording. I myself had similar plans back in 2011, but they never came about. - Lars Larsson 2017

Peeter Uuskyla / Tellef Øgrim / Anders Berg - Ullr (SIMLAS Produksjoner 2017)

It took my a little while to realise the background images on the album were of a radio telescope, so I returned to listening with a slightly different outlook. It is plain from the outset Peeter Uuskyla is an accomplished drummer and provides a driving force from the outset with the track “Disembark then Board”. The second, and title, track “Ullr” features some prominent bass work from Anders Berg. The third track “Lusk” is a little more laid back after the onslaught of the first two tracks, very introspective, perhaps like the operator of the radio telescope waiting to hear something significant.

“Shine Your Soul” (the only track featuring fretless guitar) is very sparse with hand claps and drumsticks on rims along with brush sounds, it progresses well, leaving you wondering where we are travelling, eventually the drums drive the whole thing to conclusion.

“By the Southward Verging Sun” is perhaps the most conventional track on the album, followed by “Wulƥuz” packed full of noises making you wonder just how far out these guys can go. Nothing appears double tracked so I think the trio would have no problem playing this album to a live audience, looking forward to hearing them soon.

A very enjoyable album and once again Tellef Øgrim & Anders Berg have their feet firmly planted in Experimental Avant-Garde Music. The addition of Peeter Uuskyla on drums has lifted their sound to an extra level. If you enjoy Scandinavian free jazz at the experimental level, this album is a real treat for you! Review – Jahloon – (January 2017)
