Dino Piana - Al gir dal Bughi (2021 Parco della Musica Records)

Il nuovo disco della Parco della Musica Records  è un doveroso e affettuoso omaggio al trombonista Dino Piana, definito da Enrico Rava, che ha fortemente voluto il progetto insieme al figlio Franco, “uno dei più grandi jazzisti italiani, uno dei più amati e dei più richiesti in Europa, uno dei padri storici del jazz moderno in Italia e fonte d’ispirazione per tutti i giovani trombonisti negli anni a venire”. Il titolo “Al gir dal bughi” (al giro del Boogie) nasce dal racconto del loro primo incontro durante una jam session avvenuta più di sessant’anni fa, in cui cominciarono suonare e Piana fece il primo assolo rivelandosi “qualcosa di straordinario, con una fluidità e una logica che ci lasciarono basiti. Un altro pianeta”. Da quel momento è nata una amicizia che arriva fino a oggi e che trapela anche in questo disco, prodotto dalla Parco della Musica Records e Jando Music, in cui vengono interpretati alcuni standard immortali del jazz da Bernie’s Tune a Polka Dotz and Moonbeams e Everything Happens to Me. Dino Piana, Enrico Rava e Franco Piana sono accompagnati da una sezione ritmica d’eccezione capitanata da Roberto Gatto alla batteria con Gabriele Evangelisti al contrabbasso e Julian Oliver Mazzariello al pianoforte.

Chansons! is a musical conception similar to a diplomatic treaty or melodious embrace between cousins. Essentially, it's an innovative exchange between two neighboring worlds that have always eyed and inspired one other with reciprocal curiosity. Italy and France unite as allies on the musical front, gathering on the field four extraordinary talents: Fabio Zeppetella, Roberto Gatto, Géraldine Laurent, and Emmanuel Bex. This original quartet uniquely interprets eleven songs that best reflect the musical tradition of singer-songwriters belonging to these two countries. Starting from the highly popular jazz composer Bruno Martino, passing through the ever-present Fabrizio De André and Francesco De Gregori and arriving to Pino Daniele, another milestone; on the French scene are idols such as Jacques Brel, Leo Ferré, Yves Montand, and Joe Dassin. The quartet's interpretation is extraordinary and the songs on Chansons! enchant from beginning to end. While the harmonious complicity of Gatto, Bex, and Zeppetella is a well-known fact, the musical fluency added by the involvement of Laurent is unexpected, further enriching this innovative project.

Quintorigo & Roberto Gatto - Around Zappa (2015)

A sincere, philological and experimental thanksgiving to Frank Zappa. Not merely a tribute concert or live-concept. A monographic work, accurate in its theatrical and scenographic details, an entertaining opportunity for everybody to know and rediscover Zappa’s universe.

It’s impossible to sum up briefly the countless influences in Zappa’s music, just as so many are the musicians who adopted (sometimes unconsciously) something precious from him. Among these are Quintorigo.

Critics had already found in Quintorigo’s music an evident Zappianic code almost as a priori and obsessive forma mentis. The show is also an emotional and instinctive performance, an exquisite and tasty selection from Zappa’s works which will lead us to gorge on his discography, stodgy dishes included.

Working on Zappa’s music has always been a project in embryo. Thanks to Roberto Gatto all this came true. Gatto, outstanding star of Italian and international jazz with renowned career, since forever harboring an unrestrained passion for Zappa, invited Quintorigo to bring about this beautiful idea together. Thankful and eager the band accepted. Coming out soon the album “Around Zappa”.

The cd playlist begins with instrumentals such as Uncle Meat and Peaches En Regalia. Moris Pradella joins the band singing Cosmik Debris, Don’t Eat The Yellow Snow, Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up, King Kong, Big Swifty, Igor’s Boogie, Village Of The Sun. The beautiful Uncle Remus is introduced by the violin of Andrea Costa while Gionata Costa at the cello leads the melanchonic Black Napkins, making good use of effects to convey the charisma of an electric guitar enriched by the expressiveness of the cello. And an end with a bang, playing Echidna’s Arf (Of You) e Zomby Woof.

Quintorigo and Roberto Gatto approach Zappa with refined arrangements still respecting the essence of the original songs, reread with personal sounds, exquisite textures and unrestrained experimental trend, mark of Quintorigo since their beginning. With Roberto Gatto, Quintorigo prove once again themselves distinguished musicians, gaining without reserve the passionate audience’s approval. “Around Zappa” is not to be missed by Zappa’s fans and recommended for everyone.
