Cecil Taylor – The Complete, Legendary, Live Return Concert - February 15, 2022 (Oblivion Records)

Cecil Taylor – The Complete, Legendary, Live Return Concert to be released on February 15, 2022 via Oblivion Records

Oblivion Records is delighted to announce the February 15, 2022 release of Cecil Taylor – The Complete, Legendary, Live Return Concert, marking the first chance for listeners to hear the legendary pianist’s 1973 return to live performance in full. The concert saw Taylor reunite with Cecil Taylor Unit members Jimmy Lyons (alto saxophone) and Andrew Cyrille (percussion), with the addition of Sirone on bass. This project, assembled by the original producer and recording engineer Fred Seibert, is a much-anticipated opportunity to hear the missing piece of a puzzle long-thought lost, that adds another chapter to the story of Taylor’s search for artistic freedom.

Taylor, one of the undisputed giants of free improvisation, made his return to live performance at The Town Hall, New York City on November 4, 1973. The second part of the concert produced a recording – a limited-run LP was made of the now seminal two-part ‘Spring of Two Blue-J’s’, released on Taylor’s own Unit Core label. Now, with the advent of digital recordings, the landmark ‘return’ concert is now available in its entirety, committing the 88-minute epic ‘Autumn/Parade’ to official release for the first time ever.

Taylor’s combination of restless pianistic energy and truly virtuosic artistic spirit quickly cemented his unassailable status as a true pioneer of the free jazz movement. Yet, a succession of celebrated Blue Note releases meant that, by the early 1970s, Taylor was entering a period of unprecedented financial security. By 1973, the 44-year-old Taylor had been in self-imposed recording exile for five years, choosing instead to focus on pursuing academia. In that time, Taylor worked as a visiting professor at Antioch College and University of Wisconsin-Madison, as well as dedicating time to composing.
Except for ‘Indent’, a solo piano release recorded at Antioch earlier in ’73, this was a total hiatus from recording – surprising perhaps, given the respect that recent releases Unit Structures and Conquistador! had both commanded, so thoughts of a new live album recorded in New York was a tantalizing prospect.

And so it proved. Earlier in 1973, Fred Seibert, a student at Columbia who worked at the adventurously minded WKCR Radio station, had been approached by a mysterious figure in David Laura, who had a proposal for aspiring record producer Seibert. He was going to bring the Cecil Taylor Unit to The Town Hall, and he wanted Seibert to record it.

“We were memorializing what was billed as a triumphant return,” says Seibert in his producer’s note. The Unit concert was a massive success – it reunited Taylor with long-time associates Jimmy Lyons and Andrew Cyrille along with newcomer Sirone on bass. Seibert recorded the whole concert, and, after mixing it with help from legendary engineer Tony May, a recording of the band’s second set, Spring of Two Blue-J’s made it out into the world in 1974.

Critically speaking, Spring of Two Blue-J’s was a success. Village Voice critic Gary Giddins named the album “Record of the Year”, and years later commented that it “announced Taylor’s permanent reestablishment in the music world, an end to his marginalization, and the evidence of a maturity.” It was Giddins’ record of the year. But Blue J-s only represents a third of the concert that occurred that evening. Due to the limitations of the LP format, and the impact that would make on the realisation of the group’s vision, the decision was made to not release the first 88-minute continuous set.

‘Autumn/Parade’ has many of the hallmarks of Taylor compositions and performances of the period: supercharged spontaneity, improvisational stamina, boundary transgressing in its brazen commitment to just keeping on going, and an unfettered exchange of artistic expression from four equal partners. It’s a raw, visceral musical experience for anybody listening today, which speaks to the unrelenting freshness of Taylor’s approach.

Highlights of the new recording include: Taylor’s piano rebounded an hour into the opener that pave the way for something imitative to fly around for just a second; Lyons’ soloistic flitting, oscillations that encompasses the whole of the instrument, and the piano-dominated final half hour of ‘Autumn/Parade’ that reaches the summit of a colossal musical peak, before reaching a hard-fought conclusion. But what emerges over the course of the whole return concert recording is more evidence of Taylor breaking down the final barriers of jazz conventions in pursuit of artistic freedom. The new complete recording is an exhilarating, detailed longshot of one of the greats in full flight.

The Complete, Legendary, Live Return Concert by Cecil Taylor will be available as a digital release on February 11, 2021 via Oblivion Records. Accompanying the digital release is a 23-page booklet featuring an essay by Alan Goodman. This release marks a revival for Oblivion - the label’s last announced release was in 1975.

Ophi 1 - 'Darkness', soulful new single

New song by Ophi 1. “Darkness” is the latest collaboration of singer Ophi 1 and beatmaker Jakspin, a moody neo soul gem about the dark times in our lives.

While the jazzy boom bap beat builds a thick atmosphere, Ophi 1 tells about his willingness to live without darkness. This song is dedicated to all the people suffering from depression. The pain and the helplessness of being in this dark state can be overwhelming. Ophi 1 works through his experiences trying to soothe his pain through music. Sonically the production balances between the slick production style of the 90s and a classic laid back yet funky backbeat. Atmospheric strings build a breathing basis while a desperate piano cries in the dark. Ophi 1 sings so delicately that you can feel the energy of hope and hopelessness at the same time.

About Ophi 1
Born and raised in Cologne, Germany, Ophi 1 is of Greek and Lebanese origin. He fell in love with music at an early age and made his first instrumental on a crappy Casio keyboard and a tape deck at the age of 12. He started collecting records and soon became the go-to guy for mix tapes and deejaying at parties playing hip hop and R&B. He played at clubs at the age of 16 and at 19 he started producing for singers and rappers such as local female MC Brixx and the American R&B group 4U.

Being a fan of both soul music of the 70s and hip hop of the 90s, Ophi 1 always has been bridging the gap and combining the best elements of both worlds. Finding inspiration in the masters of their game, Stevie Wonder and J Dilla were an essential influence in forming his unique style. Ophi 1 started exploring other genres throughout the years while digging deeper into Jazz and playing the piano. Ophi 1 became a self taught producer with an amazing feel for intricate melodies and sophisticated but yet minimalistic productions.

Today he plays the piano, vintage synthesizers, drums, percussion, guitar and bass.

Where did the name Ophi 1 come from?
Ophi is short for ophichulus which is a rather unknown star sign that’s between the scorpios and the sagittarius. It’s considered the healing zodiac and that’s exactly my approach to making music. I want to create the best I can in order to help people release stress and make them feel good. Besides it really is my star sign because I was born on December 10th.

“UNREST”

The Socially Reflective Two Track Single Is Available Worldwide Now

Today harpist, composer, and recent Grammy® and NAACP Image Award nominee, Brandee Younger releases “Unrest” (Impulse! Records). The socially conscious two track digital single reflects upon the extraordinary uprising against police brutality and racial violence, aurally capturing the nations sociopolitical upheaval. Made possible by a grant from the Jazz Coalition and recorded at Van Gelder studios amid a pandemic and sweeping political change, Younger deftly captures the turmoil on the emotionally charged tracks and you can listen to them here.

Commenting on the two track release Younger says, “One thing is true for every person hearing this piece; we've all witnessed unrest as the nation grapples with its past and present - all in the midst of quarantine and major political change.” “Unrest” follows the 2021 release of her major label debut album, Somewhere Different, that garnered her a Grammy® nomination for Best Instrumental Composition for “Beautiful is Black” from the genre-busting set and a NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Jazz Album – Instrumental.

In addition to her prowess as a bandleader, Younger straddles the line between the mainstream and the current jazz generation, exemplified by her work with jazz leaders and popular hip-hop and R&B luminaries including Ravi Coltrane, Kanye West, Maxwell, John Legend, Pharoah Sanders, Common, and Lauryn Hill. Her original composition “Hortense” was also featured in the Beyoncé documentary Homecoming.

Alawari - Alawari (April 29, 2022 April Records)

Do you want to see the dark backdrop that creates the scenery for your everyday life?

ALAWARI is a musical project with a European sound that brings modern history together in one burning expression and improves the contrasts in life routines.

Fragments from ancient wars and revolutions resonate in the music that brings both elements of classical music and jazz into a strong format that has never been more relevant. An orchestral, compositional and improvisational music that seeks to overwhelm and undress the listener’s reservations.

The band releases their debut album on April Records 29th of April 2022.

The debut release “ALAWARI”, is the distillate of several years of work, immortalized in one album like a musical manifesto that wants to revitalize the authentic music experience.

In 2016, the project started consisting of six musicians who quickly made themselves noticed by their telepathic and fabulous animal-like expressions. This was the message after the band in 2017 won the Young Jazz competition, which was the starting point for a European tour in Germany and Poland as well as the intake of some of the most prominent venues in Denmark..

Simon Forchhammer, Jonatan Bak, Sune Sunesen, Frederik Engell, Carlo Becker, and Asger Nissen constitutes the group that through a strong instrumental and compositional surplus seeks to create one intense and present experience that tears the world apart, and invite the listener to rebuild and put it back together.

Dimitris Angelakis - Long Way Home (April 15, 2022)

The title Long Way Home is inspired by Greek poet Konstantinos Kavafis, in particular the poem “Ithaca.” “Don’t expect Ithaca to give you many riches,” the poems reads. “Ithaca has already given you a fine voyage; without Ithaca you would never have parted.” We become who we are, Angelakis suggests, through the voyages we take, and this is in fact the voyage’s ultimate goal.

Wise words from a musician who has undertaken extensive journeys of his own. The son of an acclaimed Greek trumpet player/arranger, Angelakis established himself in Europe with a number of Greek orchestras, as well as the Delaware Steel led by Harvey Price, before moving to Philadelphia on a Fulbright. There he completed his master’s degree in music at the University of the Arts, studying with Tony Miceli and Don Glanden. He traveled as well to New York City to study privately with vibraphonist Christos Rafalides, who had been a student of Dimitris’ father. “Christos was my first teacher and first inspiration on the jazz vibraphone,” says Angelakis. “He really introduced me to the world of jazz vibes, a relationship of sharing that lasts up until today.” Angelakis also took advantage of opportunities to learn from Joe Locke, Ed Saindon, Larry McKenna and John Swana. Shortly after, he spent a year in China connecting with the Asian music scene, teaching and performing alongside Chinese and international musicians.

All these experiences inform the beautiful Long Way Home, powered by the supple rhythm team of bassist Kimon Karoutzos and drummer Jason Wastor. The five original pieces each tell a story, most of them gleaned from inspirations particular to Greece, even as the music reflects Angelakis’ immersion in the sound and culture of American jazz. “I was trying to keep my eyes open to everyday life situations,” he remarks, “especially during long periods of not traveling, like during quarantine or in the gap between my times in the States and China.”

Heidi Skjerve & Daniel Formo & Friends - I’m Glad There Is You (February 14, 2022)

Jazz vocalist Heidi Skjerve and pianist Daniel Formo have shared sunny days and rainy days, laundry, renovation projects and parenting for many years, but have now for the first time recorded an album together. During the recent pandemic times when we all have realized just how much people need other people, and how musicians need other musicians to play with, they gathered some topnotch jazz musicians at Øra Studio in Trondheim to record some of their favorite jazz standards about love and longing. The result is the present release “I’m Glad There Is You”, featuring a playful rhythmic and improvisational approach to the melodies, strong and seductive harmonies and arrangements referring to some of the great recordings from the jazz tradition.

Todd Capp + Kurt Ralske - Fire Alarm (February 2022)

“Fire Alarm” is an alarming sonic experience. The piece, recorded in one single unedited 45-minute take, shows two unique improvisors duetting at full tilt, revealing the depth of the musical connection they have built through seven years of collaboration. Todd Capp’s impossible polyrhythmic pulsations careen in all directions, while Kurt Ralske’s abstruse melodies circle back on themselves. No holds are barred in this dialogue, and its intensity sometimes feels dangerous; and yet, “Fire Alarm” is not formless: it’s a structured blast of energy, with recurring themes and dramatic shifts of texture. It begins with the sombre introspective quality of Art Ensemble of Chicago’s “People in Sorrow” and culminates in a climax hinting at the Mount Everest of sax-and-drum duets, John Coltrane’s “Interstellar Space”.

Does the “Fire Alarm” of the title refer to an alert that has not yet been sounded....or to an alarm that’s already been ringing for far too long? Either way, this music is a strong statement from two uncompromising artists, who show us they are fully committed to one ideal: now is the time for change to begin.

TODD CAPP (drums + cymbals) started in music in the mid-1960s in Chicago, playing with members of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, including Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, Lester Bowie, and Douglas Ewart. He can be heard with the Berlin-based trio Oceans Roar 1000 Drums (with Bryan Eubanks and Andrew Lafkas), and leading his own long-standing ensemble, Todd Capp’s Mystery Train.

KURT RALSKE (soprano sax, flute, ney, vibraphone) is a musician and visual artist. He is a Professor of the Practice in Digital Media at Tufts University. In some previous incarnation, he was the driving force behind the dream-pop outfit Ultra Vivid Scene on the 4AD label.

Alan Kwan Quartet - Petrichor (February 2022)

“Incisive, beautiful playing and gorgeous writing. Great record, Alan is a voice worth listening to!”
- Paul Bollenback

"Alan is a next-generation modern player/composer on the rise, from Hong Kong but with NYC pedigree. Beyond his lush harmonies, seamless rhythmic sophistication and breathy melodies, I connect with the expressiveness and honesty I hear in this array of original compositions that are beautifully recorded. It's music that will appeal to musicians who love this idiom, and to listeners new to jazz who love soothing textures and ethereal melodies. I hear the budding of a prolific composer who I think people will be excited to see/hear where he goes”
- Peter Mazza

“…The guitar artistry is exceptional, the tone is warm and rich, the technique is clear, precise and very fluid….”

Nate McBride - DANODUE (February 2022)

This is the second installment of the DANO project, a series of solo electric bass recordings on a Danelectro 3412 bass. Where the first was about the pure sound of the instrument and was improvised, DANODUE is all songs.

LIPS is thinking about my brother, who goes by Cakes.

JOE MCPHEE was recorded twice, but you hear the telephone demo here.

PLOW FLEET RADIO and the rest of this record was made during a Nor'easter and couldn’t help being named after the yellow and orange trucks working the street out the window, all that day and night.

STACKS is clearly to Stacks, and CROPS for the Colonel. I think about the sound of their playing all the time.

1936 is the only one of these songs that’s been played elsewhere, it was written for a solo show in 2019.

All of these were recorded in single passes and then left alone, though I would have loved to edit the major clam on STACKS. Per the rules and to obtain more “wood” sound from the bass, no overdubs, effects or preparations were used.

Richard D. Ruttenberg - Life Force (February 2022)

LIFE FORCE has several meanings. The impulse for creating this album is my sincere love of the music of Sergio Mendes. The tune Sambadouro literally means life force. Life Force also reminds me that we have a divine spark from above when we are born and I feel that within me at all times. I remember going to see a doctor in Pittsburgh a long time ago and he wanted to know what I felt about my health. I told him I am extremely strong within and that my divine spark is completely in tact. He liked that answer.

Life Force is all about creation, too. As many of you know, I am enthralled by everything beyond the confines of Earth. We are sadly so consumed with all the terrible stuff going on in our world that we forget that there is endless wonderment beyond the clouds. We must focus on the real challenge facing our civilization... to jettison off this planet and colonize elsewhere. I think that may well be the entire point of us being here other than bringing G-dliness down to the Earth.

This album took us well over a year to complete. I wrote all of the compositions and sent the charts to saxophonist Carl Cox, bassist Eddie Kohen, and guitarist Joe Berger. These superb musicians truly turned in exceptional performances and helped fuel the idea that these tunes will endure for years to come. That's right, I think these songs will stand the test of time beautifully and will remain pleasing to the ears forever. For me, that is the aim of creating original, meaningful music. All my life I've wanted to be a world class musician. I still yearn for such a distinction. Deep in my heart and soul I need it, you know? My sincere hope is that these original compositions will please you. I spent a long my time with these songs & came up with interesting modalities resulting in complex, beautifully crafted compositions. Combined with very simple, yet elegant melodies, I think we succeeded in providing relevant music here.

This is always the goal. The charts for these songs challenged the imaginations of the studio musicians on the album. I am forever grateful to them and am tremendously happy with the results. These brilliant players made this a special album that will endure and hold the interest of listeners for decades to come. We humbly ask you to please support the arts and purchase this digital download. Every dollar earned goes right back into creating future music. Thank you kindly, Richard

Jeff Gauthier & Maggie Parkins - The Smudges (February 18, 2022 Mack Avenue Records)

The Smudges are violinist Jeff Gauthier and cellist Maggie Parkins. The origin of their name is shrouded in mystery. Smudges on a window? Herbs that chase away evil spirits? The seamless integration of daring improvisation and varied musical styles that define these L.A. based musicians? The answer is emphatically YES!

The Smudges met after a Nels Cline recording session for his album New Monastery that Jeff produced in 2006. A few years later Maggie and Jeff were married and shortly thereafter The Smudges were born. However, it took a global pandemic and suspension of all live concerts for them to hunker down in their home studio and document their work. Thus, the album Song and Call came into being.

Born into an extraordinary musical family that includes downtown NY composer/harpist Zeena Parkins (Bjork, John Zorn, Butch Morris, Skeleton Crew), and her twin sister violinist Sara Parkins (Angeles Quartet, Eroica Trio), Maggie Parkins has been playing in ensembles with her sisters most of her life. She has since become a fixture on the West Coast scene as an accomplished new music cellist with Eclipse Quartet, Mojave Trio, and Brightwork newmusic. As an improviser she has played and/or recorded with the Jazz Passengers, Anthony Braxton, Guy Klucevsek, Caetano Veloso, Bjork, Zeena Parkins, Billy Childs, Alex Cline, Nels Cline, and many others.
Jeff Gauthier created his own musical family around his West Coast jazz/new music label Cryptogramophone, where he has been in-house producer for such artists as Nels Cline, Alex Cline, Mark Dresser, Bennie Maupin, Ben Goldberg, Jenny Scheinman and many others. As an improvising violinist Jeff has performed and recorded with artists like Nels and Alex Cline, Yusef Lateef, Adam Rudolph, Mark Dresser and Myra Melford, to name a few. He was a member of the seminal L.A. group Quartet Music with Nels and Alex Cline and bassist Eric von Essen for 12 years, and after von Essen’s death started own ensemble The Jeff Gauthier Goatette with both Clines, pianist David Witham and bassist Joel Hamilton which has recorded five CDs for Nine Winds and Cryptogramophone.

Song and Call is a Smudges sandwich of compositions by good friends Guy Klucevsek and Tom Flaherty on the outside, and pieces by Jeff and duo improvs in the center. All of this music can be performed live with the assistance of loops, samples and a vast array of computer hosted electronic effects, all activated by the violinist’s feet.

AKKU Quintet / Manuel Pasquinelli - Live (February 18, 2022 7d Media)

“Live” takes you on a 75-minute long musical journey and
leads you into the cosmos of Swiss-based AKKU Quintet
led by drummer and composer Manuel Pasquinelli (also
known for his work with Sonar & David Torn). It contains
five songs from different stages of the group's history,
recorded at various locations between 2016 and 2020.
You’ll hear the touch and character of each player, acting
as a part of the ensemble to create this atmospheric,
minimalistic yet livingly driving music.

“They take the ‘Swiss zen maximalist/minimalist approach’ of Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin, Sonar, and Schnellertollermeier to a different, but utterly logical conclusion. Fabulous stuff. Recommended!”
