1010 Ensemble - Lullaby for the Distance (October 1, 2021 Ramble Records)

The sessions for Lullaby for the Distance began towards the end of 2018 and stopped mid 2020 as Covid-19 ended 1010 Ensemble's improvisational sessions.

These 4 pieces showcase the wonderful, intuitive talents of two exceptional artists pushing each other's boundaries like a couple of seasoned pugilists; the free form piano's cosmic vamping against the driving rhythm offers a wonderful counterpoint eventually syncing in to explore a celestial motif.

The confluence of Matt Norman's rhapsodic but lilting, melodic piano lines combined with Kraig Ludensky's responsive and tribal percussion and brushed drum strokes creates a wonderfully chaotic and evocative soundtrack.

Matt Norman and Kraig Ludensky met by a chance encounter and, after a brief discussion, believed their diverse tastes in music could, perhaps, create a potent elixir for reflection, joy and madness.

Matt Norman – piano; A self-taught player living in Austin, TX has played up and down the West Coast over the years with the elders of the free and Avant-garde music scene.  Matt has engaged audiences with his unique sound, embracing the spiritual, lyrical and mystical elements of modern music, while celebrating the explorations of the past.

Kraig Ludensky – percussion; lives in Austin, TX. Kraig has performed with musicians and dancers from a wide range of genres in the United States, India, Europe and Japan. Kraig’s has studied music in India, Japan and the United States.

Vasilaraps - Four Kaminetti for Guitar Duet (October 1, 2021 Ramble Records)

Four Kaminetti for Guitar Duet is a partnership between two young Greek guitarists Giannis Arapis and Themis Vasiliou.

All rights of the musicology and biological research belong to musicologist Sergei Kapiliev.

Vasilaraps (1905, Syros - ?)

Vasilaraps was a Greek composer of Ethiopian origin. He was an innovator composer of an unprecedented musical style, combining elements of the Greek rebetiko with atonality and 12note technique.
Born in 10 of May, 1905 in the suburb Skali (Ano Chora, Syros) with royal roots of the Aksumite kingdom, hence his name.

In 1920, he moved to Athens where he got involved with the hangouts of rebetiko music. Soon, he became a virtuoso of the greek folk guitar, but without recording any of his music.

In 1935 he decided to study composition near the famous Dmitri Shostakovich in Moscow, where he settled for the rest of his life (as we can guess). From that moment he changed radically and got fully integrated into the artistic circles of the country and more generally in the local way of life.

However, few years later, after he had composed several works (most of them for guitar ensembles) he got suffered from depression and due to this hard situation, he walked away from the musical foreground. From this point onwards we have zero information about the rest of his life and activities. Probably, he ‘s not even alive for years now.

A serious musicologic research lights on some authentic manuscripts, scores and rare recordings in reel and cylinder. A basic source comes from the grand daughter of an old friend of his.

We thought, it will be unthinkable not to perform these works for guitar and finally, we got together and recorded those» as Giannis and Themis, characteristically state.

His work allows us to designate it in two significant periods of his style : The first one which is thearly period and the second one which follows the late period of his work.

In his 1st period (1935-1953) we find works with intense Greek folk and traditional idiomas in a extremely skilled mix with the style of the Russian contemporary music.

In his 2nd period we recognize a turn into atonality and 12note technique without the characteristics of rebetiko missing (rebetiko accompanies the musical nature of the composer, as much as we know) is probable, that the turn into atonality congruent with the gradual de-stalinization in Russia, without failing to mention that the composer faced the fear of censorship in the past.

Unfortunately, his entire work is still under investigation by the musicologist Sergei Kapiliev (1984 - ). The works you ‘re about to listen are brilliant samples of this musical research :Laiki (public market), op.32 SK11 (first period), Dentro (a tree), op.79 SK12 (second period) Gries (grannies), op.25 SK05 (f.p.), Siviriko (siberian), op. 102 SK15 (s.p.)

Opek - Corners (October 1, 2021 Wadada Records)

„Paths meet at the corner. People have a drink and talk at the corner. The point where two paths meet is more than a linear function. The X marks the point where two ideas meet, sometimes worlds meet, cosmoses meet, or maybe just two people meet.

Drummer and producer Opek couldn’t have made this album alone, nor would he have wanted to, because the magic comes from collaboration.

For the album ‘Corners’, Opek invited some of his favorite musicians from the Ruhr area for each and every track.

Sometimes the guests were invited as soloists (Julius van Rhee on ‘The Lighthouse’), sometimes he recorded an artist for hours just to find the perfect bass loop (Caris Hermes on ‘Finders Keepers’). The result is an intimate mixture of noisy instrumental hip hop and honest jazz.

Check your corner(s)!“

„Opek prefers the cozy retirement life over the hectic leasing lifestyle. The beatproducer, drummer and rapper was born in the Ruhr area in 1990. Not on coal and not on gold, but somewhere where there was a computer and a big brother who explained to him around 2004 how ‘Fruity Loops’ works and what a snare is. And then there was hip hop, this thing that can suddenly fill every spare minute.

After years of drunken freestyles in the park and nights of producing on Windows 98 computers, he moved on (via excursions into guitar music) to jazz. This wondrous music brought Opek to the Netherlands in 2011, where he devoted himself to the art of jazz drumming for 4 years. After that he landed in Dortmund with empty pockets. Eventhough he was filled with doubt, he kept firing up the machines, even the MPC had a bigger purpose than a doorstop or ashtray holder.

Expeditions then took Opek to almost every smoky backstage in Germany and Switzerland, especially as a drummer and producer in the trio ‘Schlakks, Opek & Razzmatazz’. He now shares an office space with ‘Cerm MC’ aka. ‘Cmern’. This is how the joint project ‘Cmern & Opsay’ came into being, where even a serious word about bumpy beats is allowed to fall.

The greyness of the city is and remains the inspiration and drive for Opek to create even more cozy sounds. And so he continues to create hits that could be played in a museum in 400 years, provided that the USB sticks will last.“

Geir Sundstøl - St. Hanshaugen Steel (October 1, 2021 Hubro Music)

After appearing on more than 400 albums as a sideman and session player, multifaceted guitarist and instrument collector Geir Sundstøl gave us a trilogy of his, long awaited, own compositions. Now he is back, with a follow-up to Norwegian Grammy-/Spellemannpris- winning album Brødløs.

St.Hanshaugen Steel offers an extraordinarily wide range of genre references, and takes us further into Sundstøl’s original and distinctive soundscapes. With clear cinematic features, Sundstøl displays an ever impressing variety of instruments, sliding from the deep and rough bass harmonica to the sharp, circus-like marxophone. In between, multiple layers of glimmering steel. Guest appearances by he angelic Sølvguttene boys’ choir bring utter goose bumps, while other parts of St.Hanshaugen Steel might induce the darker chills of Nordic Noir.

The album St.Hanshaugen Steel is an homage to the factory bearing the same name. The steel factory, founded by the somewhat evasive Jebsen Brothers, was in operation between 1890 and 1969, and was located on St.Hanshaugen in Oslo, which now is a highly popular residential area, and Sundstøl’s own stomping ground.

But rather than the chimes of industry, St.Hanshaugen Steel pays attention to the nuts and bolts that give rise to the whole machine. The title may, of course, also be a reference to Geir Sundstøl’s reputable broad spectrum-treatment of the pedal steel guitar.

While the sound of St.Hanshaugen Steel shares points of continuity with earlier Sundstøl Hubro releases Furulund (2015), Langen Ro (2016) and Brødløs (2018), there are some important departures. A new palette of sound-making devices, from Sundstøl’s hording of synthesizers, has made its quite audible mark.

«Being born in the late sixties, vocoders, Simmons synth drums, and synths in general, sound very modern to me.» Hours of exploration and studies of this “modernity” shine through this otherwise organic music, as does the analog modification of familiar sounds:

«Initially, it startet out as a technical project. I wanted to explore the possibilities of recording pedal steel onto analog tape, at 30 ips, and then slowing it down to 15 ips. Exactly an octave below. There are still traces of that experiment on the album (tracks Smet and Våg), but the exploration turned into songs.»

Another experiment developed into the eclectic track Hoven:

«I fiddled with the pitch controller on my raga box. It slowly evolved into a strange melody. It was still a Hindu melody, but when we added the church-like bass lines and the boys’ choir, it morphed into a multi-religious song.»

Like his first and third album (the sec0ond was recorded at St.Jakob church in Oslo), Sundstøl made the St.Hanshaugen Steel at home, in his Studio Intim. Once again calling upon some of his favourite musical brothers in arms; drummer and percussionist Erland Dahlen, bass players Mats Eilertsen and Jo Berger Myhre, and pianist/keyboardist David Wallumrød.

Although Sundstøl himself handles a vast variety of sometimes “unusual” instruments  - he is indeed a collector as well as a composer and musician - the presence of these “usual suspects” is crucial to achieve the Sundstøl musical universe. Erland Dahlen is also often by Sundstøl’s side at live performances. A Duo Extraordinaire.

A unique voice, yet new to this particular universe, is Arve Henriksen, who leaves his personal mark on the opening track, Våg. «I had admired Arve’s lyrical expression for years, and finally I mustered up the confidence to ask him to participate.» Initially, the trumpeter was asked to play on the outro of Våg, but he «got carried away, and added 10 tracks of trumpet and horn. We recorded Våg, thinking half-speed pedal steel, upright bass and 80’s Simmons Drums would be the core of the song. It came out a little more than that.”

Sundstøl describes the further tracks on St.Hanshaugen Steel:

“Lyssky” draws inspiration from spooky British sci-fi as well as pompous, white wig-wearing composers. David takes us on a trembling journey with his Arp synth.

KA is Indian Shankar- and National guitar-Blues. Handheld bells, analogue synths and Norway’s most beloved traditional boys’ choir, Sølvguttene. The thought of their singing in my living room still fills me with awe.

Kløpper: Mats (Eilertsen) sent me a bass line, without any instruction. I found it especially tricky to add the Mini Pops drum machine. Certainly a backwards way of doing things, but valuable. The melodica solo is an homage to the late Augustus Pablo. Pedal steel and National guitar on a bed of dub beats. My Bermuda Triangle.

Hoven: It’s got ethereal organ, Christian church-like bass over a twisted Hindu beat. I play the usual National- and pedal steel guitar, and to top it off, we added the Sølvguttene boys’ choir,. A ‘multi-culti’ song if there ever was one, with a spiritual twist.

Smet: This is quite an eerie mix of cold DX7 synth, electric insects running around Erland’s snare drum, upright bass and Parisian toy pianos. It bears traces of the mentioned technical experiment; recording steel at high speed and then slowing it down.

Omsorg: I don’t write music - I play, make mistakes that sound good, and then try to create something out of that. This track has guitar-o-phone, optigan, steel, national guitar, organ and an upright bass that sounds like an old motor boat. The bass function lies in the harmonica. And the title translates to “care”.

Pøs: 80’s vocoder and Shankar guitar paired with the Wurlitzer Side Man, the world’s first drum machine. This is probably the only track that bears any resemblance to industrial sounds. It has a somewhat old fashioned melody line, like something the great Cornelis Vreeswijk would have sung about a dad working at the factory.

For me, melody is the key. If there’s no melody, or if the melody doesn’t add up, I don’t get it.»

Olicía - Liquid Lines (October 1, 2021)

Olicía is the band of Fama M’Boup and Anna-Lucia Rupp. They live in Berlin and Copenhagen, Denmark, and share a common base in Dresden, Germany, where they met studying music, founding their own label o-cetera soon after. The two are also members of Sophie Hunger’s current band supporting her latest album “Halluzinationen”.

“Liquid Lines”, the debut album by Olicía, arrives after two Eps in 2018 and 2019 and countless concerts in the last years. It was recorded with Miles Deiaco at Monoton Studio, Berlin, and will be released on October 1st 2021. Guests on “Liquid Lines” include experimental French harpist Laura Perrudin, Drummer Demian Kappenstein (ÄTNA), and the songwriter and bass clarinetist Wencke Wollny (Karl die Große).

“Liquid Lines” is going to take on two different forms. There will be a regular 10-track digital album on streaming services, whereas the physical album is going to be a 20 track/two disk affair: each Lp or Cd functioning as an entirely different version of the album with regards to lyrics, instrumentation, grooves, collaboration partners, or even language. It makes for a listening experience that is quite unique: Immersing oneself in the dreamlike variations of these songs as the two women are emphasizing, obscuring or replacing certain elements, oftentimes actually veering off into something completely new and unexpected. That’s how Fama and Anna-Lucia would like this album to be understood - as a reflection on the liquid lines of demarcation of what constitutes a song. And - in the grander scheme - the infinite possibilities that constitute art and life itself. The “Liquid Lines” of tweaking and amending, bending and adjusting, of thinking, unthinking, and rethinking the same thing.

Sun on a Tree - The Cool of the Afternoon

Mark de Clive Lowe and Cosmic Vibrations - 'OLBAP' reimagined by Mark de Clive Lowe (Spiritmuse Records)

Spiritmuse records is celebrating the one year anniversary of the universally loved spiritual jazz opus, ‘Pathways & Passages’, by legendary vocalist Dwight Trible, and LA jazz supergroup, Cosmic Vibrations. To mark the occasion they are proud to release a special remix of album highlight “OLBAP”, reworked with true love and care into a broken beat masterpiece by the electronic jazz pioneer and pianist, Mark De Clive Lowe.

Mark de Clive-Lowe magically balances virtuoso piano playing with addictive synth grooves and live remixing flair. He left his home in New Zealand at an early age, finding himself at the center of London’s underground music scene, “joining-the-dots” between jazz and electronic music. Becoming a leading figure of the burgeoning broken beat and wider electronic jazz scenes, MdCL was championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson and revolutionised the live potential of underground sound, before moving to LA in 2008.

Cosmic Vibrations is a supergroup of heavyweight musicians with a vast combined experience, an ensemble of 6 souls, all based in LA, who approach improvisation full of spirit and without ego. As Kevin Le Gendre put it for Jazzwise, “this is a west coast supergroup whose members have the kind of credits that cover a huge swathe of black music history: Dizzy Gillespie, Horace Silver, Ramsey Lewis, Minnie Riperton and Nicole Mitchell, to name but some. That wealth of experience is priceless, and any one of the 11 songs on offer thus carries the kind of gravitas that takes Cosmic Vibrations beyond the potential cliché of ‘deep jazz’ and into the realm of deep meditation.”

Fronted by Dwight Trible, undoubtedly the most acclaimed and in-demand vocalist currently working in the realms of spiritual jazz, the band has been performing steadily over the last four years, building a reputation in LA and further afield for their mesmerising performances. ‘Pathways & Passages’ marked the first time that their transcendental sound had been recorded and publicly released.

This remix marks a perfect inter-generational meeting of LA’s long vibrant music scene. Dwight’s central role in LA is difficult to miss, from directing the Horace Tapscott Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra and leading the incredible Build An Ark ensemble alongside Carlos Niño, to forming the deep jazz supergroup, Cosmic Vibrations. Likewise, since moving to LA, Mark has united a multi-generational who’s who of LA and the world’s most respected jazz, soul, hip hop and electronic artists at his much loved CHURCH club night, and earned the role of Founding Artist in Residence for La Ceiba Festival.

The “OLBAP” remix is due for release on September 28. It marks the perfect step in Trible and MdCL’s musical relationship, since the latter contributed played piano on Trible’s acclaimed “Mothership” album, alongside Kamasi Washington, Carlos Niño and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson.

Mohannad Nasser - Al Hamra

Al Hamra is a musical journey that started at the moment I left Syria. The name of the album reflects a hidden intersection between two places that influenced me: Al Hamra street in Beirut, Lebanon, The symbol of pluralism and diversity, and Al Hamra castle in Granada, Spain, which is one of the most magnificent representations of the arabic cultural influence in Spain and Europe.

The music is based on three main musical directions, The Arabic music, expressed by the Oud, the Arabic lyrics and traditional music elements. The flamenco music brought by the grand flutist Jorge Pardo, the distinguished name in the flamenco scene, and the percussionist Sergio Martinez who twists the flamenco with groovy vibes, The Jazz music, introduced by the delicate pianist Albert Sanz through his rich harmonics, and the unique double bassist Masa Kamaguchi.

Matt Ulery to Issue First Live Recording – ‘Delicate Charms Live at the Green Mill’ on October 6

Celebrated Bassist and Composer Matt Ulery Announces the Release of His First Live Record, Delicate Charms Live at the Green Mill

Out October 6th on Woolgathering – Release Show/Residency Kickoff at the Hungry Brain on October 6th

Woolgathering Records is thrilled to announce the October 6th release of bassist and composer Matt Ulery’s Delicate Charms Live at the Green Mill. This recording captures an electrifying evening of live music from Ulery’s Delicate Charms ensemble, performing at the legendary Chicago institution The Green Mill. Following the ensemble’s eponymous release in October of 2019, 2021’s Delicate Charms Live at the Green Mill presents six brand new Ulery compositions interpreted by five masterful musicians that when assembled, create a deeply adept ensemble unparalleled in interplay and dynamic sensibility. Profoundly reflective of the time-period in which the album was recorded, the exultant energy heard here captures an eagerly-awaited evening of live music – a hungrily anticipated night of freedom and creative expression after a disorienting period of imposed solitude due to the global health crisis. In addition, the travel restrictions of the time imposed some changes in the ensemble’s personnel – Ulery is joined here by pianist Paul Bedal, drummer Quin Kirchner, alto saxophonist Greg Ward, and trumpeter James Davis. On the night of release, Ulery will kick off the first outing of his new weekly residency at The Hungry Brain with an album release celebration. Details can be found HERE.

Ulery reflects: “Just as Chicago was starting to open up in April/May 2021, it seemed like the only live music happening inside was at some of the jazz clubs. The Green Mill was operating with a seated only capacity. While braving the elements, we were all so hungry for live music in a room together, so it was no surprise that the vibe in the room was tangible…We couldn’t imagine replicating the energy in a studio that was created and felt that weekend at the Mill. ” The band played six sets from 8pm to midnight each night for two nights, as Dave Jemilo, the proprietor of the Green Mill, mixed live sound. Performing new material written by Ulery within the year, Delicate Charms Live at the Green Mill documents the most spirited takes of the ensemble’s first impressions of these striking compositions.

The composer explains, “The tunes on this record have long, dynamic forms requiring intense engagement of the musicians at play. I wanted to create something new (to me) that has the composure of chamber music while having the agility through these forms only potent improvisers can bring to the flow… These guys absolutely crushed the new material, all the ink and all the dynamic improvisation that is always woven throughout this music.”

From the album’s very first refrains, the ensemble strikes an acute balance between harmonic intensity, thoughtful nuance and soulful delivery. Ulery’s orchestral genius is apparent when one notes the sheer range of timbre and dynamics that he pulls out of a single quintet – pieces like “We Are Just at the Limit” and “That Hideous Strength” seem to center heavily around the piano while “Oceans Away” and “The Arrival” are driven by the ensemble’s steadfast horn section. “Consumer of Time” makes ample use of Ulery’s stellar bass playing, before evolving into a true ensemble piece. These changes in density make for a diverse and exciting listening experience.

This live release acts as a vibrant follow-up to Ulery’s 2019 release Delicate Charms which garnered international acclaim. Hrayr Attarian of Chicago Jazz Magazine noted “The mellifluous and intricate Delicate Charms is thought-provoking and charmingly sophisticated. It is novel, complex yet accessible, which, together with its singular style, are the makings of an instant classic.” Michael Ambrosino wrote, for 33Third: Best of 2019, “By the end of the album you’ll realize this is Matt Ulery’s harmonic world, and we just live in it.” Delicate Charms Live at the Green Mill transports listeners into Ulery’s immersive harmonic world within the stirring, irreplaceable atmosphere of a live performance.

The Humanity album is an attempt to connect two separate worlds. The world of electronics algorithm and awakening, and the world of nature, beauty and inner peace. The album is a story about the fact that you can and even have to find a balance between these two worlds. The musicians try to fully absorb into a given composition, which has a great effect on the emotions of the listeners.

We recommend you to fully absorb our album to be able to fully feel these emotions.

Bill McBirnie & Bruce Jones - Forever

Several months into the pandemic, Bruce and I decided to work on our third Extreme Flute recording project, because we were both looking for something to do musically, and we also needed to maintain a sense of musical belonging in what had become very challenging circumstances, for all of us.

Of course, with COVID protocols in place, we had no choice but to tackle this project remotely, which meant we had to exchange sound files, back-and-forth, back-and-forth, throughout the entire process. So it felt as though this was taking us...forever!...

Nonetheless, it was a genuinely satisfying endeavour. Bruce’s compositions have always been a draw for me, because they are diverse, and inevitably infused with a Brazilian spirit. So we sorted through his current—and past—works, picking tunes that had a more relaxed vibe in the hope that this repertoire might resonate with our equally COVID-distressed family, friends, fans and followers. My wife, Svetlana, had a big hand in the final selection of tunes...so one of the new ones is dedicated to her!...

Bruce is a multi-talented vocalist, instrumentalist and engineer whom I have respected and admired for many years. In fact, when I first heard Bruce play with his band, Da, at the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival about 30 years ago, I said to my friends at the time, “I want to be in this band!”...And soon enough, I was!...

So I have been playing and recording with Bruce from the very beginning of my career as a freelance flutist.

In keeping with our earlier Extreme Flute projects, Bruce laid down the bed tracks, I overdubbed my flute lines and improvs, and then we mixed the tracks. However, what makes this Extreme Flute project different—and a genuine treat as well—was having bassist, Robin Latimer, record with us. She displayed outstanding workmanship and provided a solid foundation for this most recent incarnation of Extreme Flute.

Finally, Bruce and I would like to convey our continuing gratitude to Canada’s premier jazz station, Jazz.FM91, for including music from both of our earlier Extreme Flute albums (Desvio and Grain of Sand) in their spin cycle for what is now close to two decades.

And so even if it felt like it would take us forever to finish, FOREVER is finally here...and now!...

Sverre Gjørvad - Time To Illuminate Earth (Losen Records)

Ah to move the fingertips slightly over the keys to build a palace in the sky.

Ah to scratch the skins with the sticks and break the ice of the river, crackling and rushing to devour and destroy.

Ah to break through the monotony of silent space with a billowing boom from the bellows of the bass and swoon.

Ah to ride the noise that has no name and call it a guitar that clouds the crispness of the Arctic autumn air.

Ah to tell these stories of elements that rule and swallow our lives – so enviously cyclical, indestructible, constant.

Fire
Water
Air
Earth

The burning, flowing, bright and constant.

Ah to break and build and crash through space of sound.

Ah the silence. The value of a comma in a story. The value of the breath in the telling. The golden thread itself that stitches with an invisible hand.

Ah to relish in the darkness and the levity – caressing nature itself without reproach, without demands, within oneself.

Ah to give this sound to nature – an offering, a sacrifice, a breathless short story told with bold rhythm and a soft touch.

Transformation is the core of Sverre Gjørvad´s compositions. The nature that is transformed through sound, sound that is transformed by reconstruction of time and melody, melody that transforms into stories.

There is a highly cinematic approach to compositions all through the three elemental albums that Gjørvad has created in the past three years. With him a constant trio: Herborg Rundberg, piano; Kristian Svalestad Olstad, guitar; and Dag Okstad, bass. All engaged in this work with nature and storytelling in their own unique, and boundary breaking way.

On this particular album there is also a contribution from Embrik Snerte, bassoon on two of the songs. The woodwind brings both an eeriness and a lightness to the stories that are told.

And maybe somewhat of a slavic sentimentality. But then again, that is in the ear of this listener.

As is much of the experience with Sverre Gjørvad´s compositions – what you bring along as a listener matters profoundly.

It inspires the power of your own imagination.

MMMΔ - Roto Vildblomma (Improved Sequence)

CROW WITH NO MOUTH (US) Anyone seeking engulfment in the throb and thrum of the low- end frequencies- and sometimes nothing else will do- look no further than Roto Vildblomma, released in May 2010 on Dimitris Kariofilis' Antifrost label. Kariofilis, a.k.a., ILIOS, meshes his oscillators with the seething drawn strings of cellist Nikos Veliotis and contrabassist Costantino Kinakos, a.k.a., Coti K. Following the brief, anthemic first track, we are immersed in tremors and troubled waters that push the air [and your innards] around, unrelieved save for a motoric development on the fourth track, an acceleration, as oxymoronic as that sounds, of Mohammad's pervasive gravitas. Celllist Veliotis has become, in my recent, overlapping listening spheres, a somewhat ubiquitous presence. He brings the swot and strum of his cello to another trio offering this year, the stellar Cooper Fields.

He is half of the excellent duo Texturizer, with Coti K, whose two releases on Antifrost are well worth searching for. He is part of the imminent Looper release, with saxophonist Martin Kuchen and percussionist Ingar Zach, yet another trio that investigates long-form throb and shimmer. And on Roto Vildblomma, he is one third of the grounding gestalt field this trio achieves, with only occasional glimpses of the discrete parts of the instrumental whole. Veliotis has gradually developed his approach with the BACHbow, the creation of a fellow cellist that extends the arco possibilities, enabling him to draw across as many strings as he wishes. Mohammad create a nearly seamless garment, satisfyingly replete with the frayed, loose ends such harmonically close, pitch-based drone works reveal.

Another reviewer referenced the "religious" aura of their sound; while I think I hear what he was referring to, I would suggest a different coloration- ceremonial. For what rite this sort of low-end strum might be created, who knows? I do know the two individuals I have heard from who have caught Mohammad's sound in live performance report the experience is overwhelmingly powerful. Mohammad have dedicated their collective efforts to the subtle striations of the low-end strings, and Roto Vildblomma is, for me, without a dull or stray moment. It is fantastic to hear some of the new music coming from Greece and, to date, when any of the members of Mohammad are involved, there is reason to anticipate it with high expectations.

Max Agnas (feat. Salvador Sobral & Nils Agnas) - The More I Let the World In

Max Agnas is a jazz pianist based in Stockholm, Sweden. His fourth album in his own name called "The More I Let the World In" comes out on the 26th of September featuring Salvador Sobral & Nils Agnas.

In the album, Max does quite the opposite of trying to blend genres, which is so often done. Max locks himself in with pure, core ideas and starts to dig deeper and deeper with what he already has.

Jose Ignacio Santos - Fuera de Cauce

Fuera de Cauce represents the “culmination” of one of the most important events of my life in the past few years, finishing my studies at Berklee College of Music. It also represents a challenge that I had for myself ever since I got into Berklee, which was to compose everything I was going to play in my Senior Recital. And it was, in fact, a really hard challenge because I double majored in Film Scoring and Performance and had a lot of different projects to finish. That without counting that it was all while Corona was at its worst.

So, Fuera de Cauce it’s a selection of three of the pieces I did for my last recital at Berklee College of Music.
