Over the past few years Dave Gisler has earned himself an
impressive reputation in the free-thinking force field of contemporary
jazz as a maverick sound architect on the electric guitar. with
Lionel Friedli, the impulsive style-busting force of nature on the
drums, and the agile bassist Raffaele Bossard, with his earthy tone,
Gisler brought two of the most sought after musicians on the Swiss
jazz scene. Since 2016 these three fans of choice yet rough-edged
musicianship have been navigating their ship through open musical
seas with punky energy, the driving power of indie rock, the free
aesthetic of the 1960s and the cadences of modern jazz.
The debut album, Rabbits on the Run, is a stock-take of the moment,
a shimmering array of this genre-busting trio’s potential. without
falling into superficial musical eclecticism, the trio celebrate stylistic
diversity, orientating themselves on factors independent of style,
such as intensity, contrast or energy. Rabbits on the Run; in flight
the rabbit leaps sideways. And it is surprising changes of direction
and atmospheric turning points which characterise our trip through
the all-encompassing sonic cosmos of this promising trio.

Today, it is 10 years since we released our first album, an album of improvised piano duets with label boss Dave Stapleton and Matthew Bourne called Dismantling the Waterfall.
Over the last 10 years there's been an incredible amount of change in the industry, Myspace came and went. People said the CD would die in 5 years. Downloads were perceived to be the future dominant platform... and now we have streaming, a platform that looks set to save the industry.
Socially and culturally the world is a very different place with so much uncertainty - the one thing that remains consistent in all the turmoil is the music. Of course, music and the musicians who play it has always been and always will be our driving force and our motivation in building Edition.
Our goal for the next years isn't going to change: to release great new music from artists who represent the vast and diverse creative European music scene; rethinking every process to make it happen for the good of the musicians. And there's no shortage of great music and talent!
There are so many people to thank - global partners, distributors and media (you know who you are) but most of all we want to thank the fans for listening and the musicians for continuing to produce incredible music - without either, there is no scene.

The music on this recording is inspired by Beowulf as translated by Seamus Heaney. In approaching the text for adaptation, Catherine set herself up with a cassette player and an old typewriter, and began to go through the book catching the phrases and passages that leapt forth. These excerpts, once accumulated, constituted the musical scores. Catherine and Brian's intention in working with this text was to treat it not in an academic or analytical manner, but rather in a way that confronts it face-to-face; they were interested in the magic of it and in the personal and collective journey of discovering that magic for themselves as expressed through their music.

Group Listening - Clarinet & Piano: Selected Works Vol. 1 (PRAH Recordings May 4, 2018)
Piano & Clarinet: Selected Works Vol. 1 is the debut album from Group Listening, a collection of ambient works - from the likes of Brian Eno, Arthur Russell, Roedelius and Robert Wyatt - arranged for clarinet and piano.
Black is best known for recording albums and touring extensively under the guise of Sweet Baboo, as well as working with Cate Le Bon, H. Hawkline and others. Paul is an acclaimed jazz pianist and experimental musician. He played with Keith Tippett, formed The Jones O’Connor Group, performed with noise improv bands and composed orchestral and chamber music.
Cutting out the post production and keeping overdubs to a minimum, the clarinet and piano were passed through guitar stomp boxes and other analogue effects to enable processing and manipulation directly in performance. The result hums with the ghostly energy of sound pioneers Joe Meek and Martin Hannett, while mbira and drum machines are sparingly deployed amid enveloping folds of space echo.
Like Virginia Astley or Simon Jeffes, Group Listening tread the overlap between classical and experimental music. Perhaps most startling here is the breadth of material arranged as one atmospheric whole. The pieces range from the ever-spiralling, fractal phrases of German composer Roedelius to the haunting rasps of game and Hollywood soundtracker Disasterpiece and the pioneering sonics of early electronic inventor Raymond Scott. Somehow, shot together through Group Listening’s electro-acoustic lens, these works evolve into something supremely calming, poignant and new.

“Phonograph Team Project” begun as a collaboration between Guitarist David Wright (California, US), Drummer Tommaso Monopoli (Rome, Italy) and Pianist Gianluca Grasso (Italy) who initially met online via a social networking site for musicians, they were later joined by Bassist Rob Glass (Vancouver BC, Canada) to round out the quartet.

Little did anyone imagine that it would take a masterly drummer to pick up the mantle of the late, great Oscar Peterson as a leader of outstanding piano, bass and drum trios. Still, those with attuned ears will recognize that Jeff Hamilton has assembled one of the most meticulous and exciting small ensembles of present day jazz. With the virtuosic pianist Tamir Hendelman and the redoubtable bassist Christoph Luty working in swinging tandem alongside him, Hamilton-one of the most acclaimed drummers of the past five decades-reasserts his role as an invaluable bandleader. Live from San Pedro, available February 16, 2018 via Capri Records, is proof that the chemistry between these three equally gifted and assertive players remains unabated 17 years into the group's existence. Nodding to the grand tradition that predates them, yet eager to put a fresh face on the musical proceedings, the Hamilton trio stakes its place as a classic ensemble within the hallowed history of piano trios.
Captured at a single night's performance at the Alvas Showroom in San Pedro, California, the trio dives deep into an imaginative repertoire that includes bop standards ("In Walked Bud"), a beloved ballad ("I Have Dreamed"), reworked show tunes ("Gary, Indiana"), a classic from the Ahmad Jamal playbook ("Poinciana") and a host of original tunes from group members and others including John Clayton and Joe LaBarbera. The set demonstrates the indivisible unity that the threesome has achieved, as well as the individual virtuosity of each distinguished trio member. While not overtly resembling the trios of Oscar Peterson, the Hamilton trio shares the same rigorous adherence to stop-on-a-dime arrangements, careful dynamics and perfectly framed improvisations.
While asserting his leadership through his extraordinary rhythmic control, not to mention his exquisite taste, Hamilton is the opposite of a grandstanding percussionist. As Geoffrey C. Ward has written, "He's a musician first and foremost, always eager to serve the music, not to make the music serve him." One of the great practitioners of the art of brushwork, Hamilton gets to exhibit his mastery throughout the recording; his feature, "Brush This," composed by the bassist John Clayton (Hamilton's cohort in the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra) is a special treat. His equally renowned stick work is also abundantly on display. With Hamilton navigating the trio through its paces, and Hendelman and Luty locking in with communal exactness, the band becomes a well-oiled, yet creatively inspired, swing machine.
One of the giants of mainstream jazz drumming, Jeff Hamilton has been heard with the big bands of Woody Herman and Count Basie, and as a member of the popular L.A. 4, as well as with such icons as Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Brown, Monty Alexander and Oscar Peterson. In addition to his work with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Hamilton has appeared with Diana Krall both in performance and on recordings. Live from San Pedro is his third Capri Records album with the Jeff Hamilton trio.
The Israeli-born Tamir Hendelman has played with such luminaries as Tierney Sutton, Teddy Edwards and Harry Allen, and is the pianist for the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. Christoph Luty is also a member of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra and has worked with Diana Krall, John Pizzarelli and Milt Jackson, among others.

Vandermark & Snow - DUOL (CATALYTIC SOUND 2018)
Although he is best known as a groundbreaking experimental filmmaker, one of the architects of structural cinema, and visual artist, Michael Snow has been active as a musician since the 1950s. In Greenwich Village of the 1960s, his loft was the site of concerts by Cecil Taylor and other paragons of free jazz, and Snow’s film New York Eye and Ear featured a soundtrack by Albert Ayler’s group and starred its members. A brilliant keyboardist and occasional trumpeter, Snow was a key figure in Toronto’s improvised music scene, performing and recording with the ensemble CCMC, and as an improvising pianist he’s worked in myriad contexts with many of the world’s leading free players. Saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer Ken Vandermark first learned about Snow as a film student in Montreal, where the classic work Wavelength confounded and fascinated him. In 2015, Vandermark and Snow performed together for the first time as a duet, resulting in three astounding long-form improvisations. Snow dug in hard at the piano, with clusters and repeated figures, while Vandermark was explosive on tenor and surgical on clarinet, opting often for the latter. The entire evening’s music is released here, an early painting by Snow adorning the cover, and a still from the concert’s videotaped footage spanning the gatefold interior.

Jon Irabagon Quartet w/ special guest Tim Hagans - Dr. Quixotic's Traveling Exotics (IRABBAGAST RECORDS May 15, 2018)
Recorded while on tour in South America, Dr. Quixotic's Traveling Exotics finds Jon Irabagon's long-standing quartet (the same rhythm section from his 2015 album Behind the Sky) teamed up with trumpet wizard Tim Hagans. Together they bop, weave, dance and fly through six of Irabagon's labyrinthian compositions, with each one getting the funhouse mirror treatment and the freak show send off. This recording captures a band in full flight mode in the middle of a lengthy and successful tour.
