Brian Lynch: Madera Latino - A Latin Jazz Perspective On The Music Of Woody Shaw (2016)

Four years in the making, Grammy© Award winning trumpeter Brian Lynch’s “Madera Latino” (Latin Wood) project, exploring the music of jazz innovator and master trumpeter Woody Shaw in a Latin Jazz format, is finally ready for release on Hollistic MusicWorks!

The music of the late, great Woody Shaw (1944-1989) – an innovative and highly individual musical lexicon, expressed through both his chosen instrument of trumpet and his equally distinguished compositions – set a standard of excellence and modernity for Black American Music that has not been surpassed in the 50 years since he first came onto the jazz scene. Madera Latino is an exploration of this giant’s music as viewed through the lens of authentic Afro-Caribbean rhythm and framed by the loving treatment of his compositions in virtuosic Latin Jazz style by Grammy© Award winning trumpeter Brian Lynch. It is also a heartfelt tribute to the genius of Woody by a all star lineup of today’s top trumpeters: Lynch, Sean Jones, Dave Douglas, Diego Urcola, Michael Rodriguez, Etienne Charles, Josh Evans, and Philip Dizack.

In trumpet combinations from duo to quartet, these eminent horns explore Shaw classics including In A Capricornian Way, Tomorrow’s Destiny, Zoltan, Song Of Songs, Sweet Love Of Mine, and more, along with two original pieces – one a extended suite – written by Lynch in salute to the profound influence Woody has had on him as a player and composer.

The band for Madera Latino fulfills the promise of Lynch’s audacious concept with élan, precision, and joyous creativity. Percussionists Pedrito Martinez and Little Johnny Rivero, along with bassist Luques Curtis, were integral to the success of Lynch’s 2006 CD Simpático, a Grammy@ Award winner in the Latin Jazz category. Add drummer Obed Calvaire, percussionist Anthony Carrillo, and pianist Zaccai Curtis, and a mighty rhythm section emerges to spur and challenge the trumpeters to their utmost efforts in praise of Shaw.

“The combination of Woody’s music and the Afro-Caribbean clave concept was always a natural to me”,states Lynch. “I’m very happy, after many years of thinking about this idea, to finally be able to actualize this tribute to my musical hero, Woody Shaw, in the distinguished company of these amazing trumpeters and my musical family.”

“I am very proud of what Brian has done with this project, and particularly of the depth of sincerity and the meticulousness with which he has treated the re-interpretation of Woody Shaw’s original works within the Afro-Latino idiom. My respect and gratitude go out to the musicians on this recording for keeping the spirit of this music – and of one of its last great innovators – alive and strong in the 21st century.”

HYPER+ AMIR ELSAFFAR - SAADIF (2016) [NUSICA.ORG]

HYPER+ AMIR ELSAFFAR NEW CD "SAADIF" IS OUT NOW!

SAADIF means in arabic "meeting" and is the result of the collaboration between Amir ElSaffar, New York multiethnic scene’s rising star, and the Italian trio HYPER+.

An original album between tradition and innovation, where the "beyond-jazz" of Hyper+ is mixed with Iraqi maqam music.

Amir ElSaffar, trumpet & vocals
Nicola Fazzini, alto & soprano sax
Alessandro Fedrigo, acoustic bass guitar
Luca Colussi, drums

In these last years, physical and cultural borders sadly seems to be stronger than ever and cultural barriers keep on standing. Musical projects built upon the idea of make identity meet offer different ways of relationships and artistically innovative narratives in integration.

In this perspective the collaboration between trumpeter Amir ElSaffar (New York multiethnic scene’s rising star) and the platform HYPER+, that allows to Nicola Fazzini, Alessandro Fedrigo and Luca Colussi trio to work with different guests, is a stunning, expressive, meeting.

In this quartet, the original method of ElSaffar (musician who has collaborated with artists like Vijay Iyer, Don Byron, Cecil Taylor or Marc Ribot), using the microtones found in Iraqi maqam music to create an innovative approach to harmony and melody, stimulates fellow musicians (who work together in the renamed XY Quartet) to explore new acoustic and electric paths, between tradition and innovation.

Born in Chicago to an American mother and an Iraqi father, Amir ElSaffar plays the trumpet, the santur and sings traditional Iraqi music. After undergoing classical training the focus of his work has been on jazz, collaborating with great names of contemporary jazz.

After an italian tour in November 2015, the quartet has recorded (for nusica.org label) “Saadif” (“meeting”) at Casa della Musica in Trieste. Published in April 2016, the record contains original tunes, mostly composed by ElSaffar. “Saadif” carries the listener on an evocative journey, cunningly structured, rich of shades and colorful, a music where urban tensions and multicultural relationships are able to light sparkles of future sounds.

LOS 300 presentan The Fighting Kangaroo

Bandcamp is doing something incredibly awesome today in support of immigrants/basic human values.

Read this statement from Bandcamp Founder & CEO, Ethan Diamond:
"Like 98% of U.S. citizens (including the President), I am the descendant of immigrants—my great-grandparents came to America from Russia and Lithuania as teenagers and worked in sweatshops until they were able to afford to bring the rest of their families over. Most everyone you speak to in this country has a similar story to tell, because we are, in fact, a nation of immigrants, bound together by a shared belief in justice, equality, and the freedom to pursue a better life. In this context, last week’s Executive Order barring immigrants and refugees from seven Middle Eastern countries from entering the United States is not simply immoral, it violates the very spirit and foundation of America.

Contrary to the assertions of the current administration, the order will not make us safer (an opinion shared by the State Department and many members of Congress including prominent Republicans). Christian religious leaders have denounced both the ban, as well as the exception prioritizing Christian immigrants, as inhumane. It is an unequivocal moral wrong, a cynical attempt to sow division among the American people, and is in direct opposition to the principles of a country where the tenet of religious freedom is written directly into the Constitution. This is not who we are, and it is not what we believe in. We at Bandcamp oppose the ban wholeheartedly, and extend our support to those whose lives have been upended.

And so all day this Friday, February 3rd (starting at 12:01am Pacific Time), for any purchase you make on Bandcamp, we will be donating 100% of our share of the proceeds to the American Civil Liberties Union, who are working tirelessly to combat these discriminatory and unconstitutional actions.

As another way of showing solidarity with the immigrants and refugees from the seven banned countries—as well as those impacted by the construction of the Mexican border wall—we’ve compiled a list of albums made by artists from the affected countries (Bandcamp may be incorporated in the United States, but we host artists from every corner of the world). We believe that knowledge and empathy are crucial weapons against fear and intolerance. We hope that, as you listen to these albums, you’ll not only discover some great new artists, but will also gain a further appreciation and understanding for the way music transcends all borders, and remember that, even in the darkest of times, there is more that unites us than divides us."

To encourage our fans to support this great and extrememly generous offer from Bandcamp, Cuneiform is having a RARE One-Day-Only Sale which is your only chance to TAKE 20% OFF all digital album download purchases on Cuneiform Records' Bandcamp page this means you have the unique opportunity to SAVE BIG when buying albums you'll love by Cuneiform artists, such as:
