Chabuco - Encuentro (SONY MUSIC 2018)

Singer-songwriter Chabuco, preceded by a long and respected career in his native Colombia, released his fourth solo album titled Encuentro worldwide. The album, his first under the record label of Sony Music, is available digitally through iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, Lola Music, Light Music and Napster.

Chabuco, who has always been passionate about vallenato culture and Colombian folklore that runs through his veins thanks to his father, the great guitarist Hugues Martinez, has distinguished himself by interpreting Vallenato music in his own style. He adds a 'twist' to all his musical projects and is known for mixing local sounds with jazz, flamenco, samba, bolero and even ranchera music, resulting in a beautiful and unique sound of Latin Jazz. With Encuentro, Chabuco fuses the sounds of folk music from the Caribbean coast of Colombia, with jazz and bossa nova. 

The album was recorded in São Paulo, Brazil and produced by the famous Brazilian musician, musical composer and producer, Swami Jr. (Omara Portuondo, Chico César), who helped bring together the best Latin American musicians to create this incredible record. In addition to a song featuring a duet with incomparable Alejandro Sanz (Ausencia), the album includes collaborations by renowned Dominican singer-songwriter, Vicente García (in the song Margarita); the famous Brazilian pianist Zé Godoy; the renowned Puerto Rican percussionist Richie Flores (who has recorded with Tito Puente and Celia Cruz among many others); music composer and instrumentalist Milton Mori; percussionist Douglas Alonso; and bassist Marcelo Mariano (Djavan).

Chabuco is an innate talent, who grew up in the Colombian coast in an environment surrounded by art, musicians, painters and composers. With his ability to play guitar, accordion and percussion as well as his extraordinary and original voice, Chabuco entered the musical world for the first time as one of the four members of the group "Los Pelaos" (1998-2000). This group made several international tours visiting countries such as Spain, Italy, Germany, Sweden, United States and Mexico. After the group parted ways, Chabuco began his solo career. His albums Morirme de Amor (featuring legendary Cuban artist Alfredo Nodarse), Nació Mi Poesía (a collaborative album with Nicolas de los Rios), Clásicos Café La Bolsa and De Ida y Vuelta are a musical journey of many different genres. Several outstanding musicians participated in this last album mentioned including Kike Purizaga, Diego Valdez, Carlos Huertas, Horacio ‘El negro Hernández’' and Israel Suárez 'Piranha'. The album revolutionized the way an album was released in Colombia being distribution through the daily printed newspaper El Tiempo. Chabuco sold over half a million copies of his album, something never done before by any artist in the country. 

Chabuco had the honor of participating in the documentary La guitarra vuela (2016), which follows the 9-country tour of the last guitar made for the late Spanish musical genius Paco de Lucia. He’s performed in major international venues including the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico, the Sala Berlanga in Madrid and the House of Blues in Stockholm, Sweden; besides having collaborated with top international artists such as Alejandro Sanz (he participated in his album Sirope), Juanes, Fonseca, Rosana, the Brothers Carmona, Magos & Limon, Daniel Baute, Sole Giménez, Diego El Cigala, Mojito Lite and Rosario Flores among many others.

Bill Frisell - Music IS (OKEH RECORDS / SONY MUSIC March 16, 2018)

Almost every day, Bill Frisell gets up in the morning, has some coffee, and writes music. At this point, there are piles and piles and piles of single pages of staff paper filled with his graceful script. “I don’t know where the melodies come from,” says Frisell. “I try not to judge anything and just let them be.”

Frisell’s mantra, or motto so to speak, is, “Music is Good” – a statement said to him by his dear friend and great banjo player Danny Barnes. “That is something that I can say is always true. It’s so perfect. Everything I need to know is that phrase, ‘Music is Good.’ I almost called the album that, but then I thought that might be too literal. It’s good to leave it open.”

Music IS – to be released March 16 on OKeh/Sony Music Masterworks – marks the first solo album from the master of his craft since the release of Ghost Town, released on Nonesuch 18 years ago.

“Playing solo is always a challenge,” Frisell says. “For me, music has all along been so much about playing with other people. Having a conversation. Call and response. Playing all by myself is a trip. I really have to change the way I think. In preparation for this recording I played for a week at The Stone in New York. Each night I attempted new music that I’d never played before. I was purposely trying to keep myself a little off balance. Uncomfortable. Unsure. I didn’t want to fall back on things that I knew were safe. My hope was to continue this process right on into the studio. I didn’t want to have things be all planned out beforehand.”

Triosence – Bernhard Schüler (piano) Matthias Nowak, Triosence - Hidden Beauty (SONY MUSIC / OKEH RECORDS 2017) Ingo Senst (bass) and Stephan Emig (drums) have caused a sensation within the music press for some years now. They have been called “the new leading standard”, “an example of musical trinity”, “a highlight that touches you deeply”, “their music makes the sun rise in the west” to name only a few of the positive responses to the trio.

Formed in 1999, triosence has won almost every Jazz competition there is to win in Germany. After receiving the 1st prize at the German federal competition “Jugend jazzt” they won the Ostsee (Baltic Sea) Jazz Festival Prize, a CD recording contract with the German national radio network “Deutschlandfunk”, the “Kulturförderpreis” of the city of Kassel and many more. Furthermore they were nominated for the German Record Review Award and for being the best newcomers of the German International Jazz Charts. Since their debut CD release of “First Enchantment”, in Japan the band has been regarded as one of the most successful newcomer jazz bands and the German magazine “stern” (star) calls them “the new faces of German Jazz”.

The “trio-essence” lies within the emancipation of piano, bass and drums, achieved by Bernhard Schüler’s original compositions and by the strong individuality of the three musicians. Each instrument can take the lead. Thus, they have a much wider spectrum of sound than traditional trios normally have. There are influences of Jazz, Fusion, Folk, Pop and World. The emphasis on melodies and their clarity creates a fresh and new style that the band has coined songjazz.

This not only satifies connoisseurs of jazz music, but also people having less background with jazz.

Yosvany Terry & Baptiste Trotignon - Ancestral Memories (OKEH / SONY MUSIC 2017)

With grant support from the French-American Jazz Exchange Program, Cuban-American saxophonist Yosvany Terry and French pianist Baptiste Trotignon present a unique and exciting program inspired by the rich and diverse musical traditions that emerged from the African Diaspora in the United States and former French colonies in the Americas. Named Ancestral Memories, the project captures the rhythms, melodies, and harmonies of the Caribbean, New Orleans and French Louisiana, re-imagined through 21st century aesthetics and a jazz sensibility.

Ancestral Memories also comprises Terry’s longtime rhythm section of his brother, bassist Yunior Terry and Power House drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts, the most influential drummer of his generation. The quartet will toured the US in the Fall of 2015 and in France during June 2016.

Nominated for a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album, New Throned King, Yosvany Terry’s most recent album, was based on a similar concept and seamlessly blended modern jazz with the ceremonial music of the West African and Cuban Arara culture.

Miles Davis Quintet - Freedom Jazz Dance (The Bootleg Series Vol. 5) SONY MUSIC 2016 (3 CD)

A 3CD box set collection chronicling Miles’ musical evolution in the studio from 1966-1968 working with his “second great quintet,” the latest edition in Columbia/Legacy’s acclaimed Miles Davis Bootleg Series provides an unprecedented look into the artist’s creative process, drawing on full session reels including all rehearsals, partial and alternate takes, extensive and fascinating studio conversation and more.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Miles Smiles, the groundbreaking second studio album from the Miles Davis Quintet–Miles Davis (trumpet), Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone), Herbie Hancock (piano), Ron Carter (bass) and Tony Williams (drums)–this definitive new collection includes the master takes of performances which would appear on the Miles Smiles (1967), Nefertiti (1968) and Water Babies (recorded 1967, released 1976) albums alongside more than two hours worth of previously unreleased studio recordings from original sessions produced by Teo Macero (with the exception of “Fall,” produced by Howard A. Roberts).

“Circle,” “Orbits,” “Dolores” and “Freedom Jazz Dance” were recorded at the historic Columbia 30th Street Studio in New York City on October 24, 1966. “Gingerbread Boy” and “Footprints” were recorded at the same location the following day, October 25, 1966. Full session reels – every second of music and dialogue – that were taped for the Miles Smiles album are included. Prior to this the only material ever released from the classic album were the master takes for the six songs. Never before have the full session reels for an entire Miles Columbia album been released, here providing an in-depth look at the studio process of one of jazz’s greatest bandleaders, and arguably the greatest small jazz group ever.

“Masqualero”, heard on the set in a previously unreleased alternate take, was recorded at Columbia 30th Street Studio on May 17, 1967. “Water Babies” and “Nefertiti” were recorded there on June 7, 1967. “Fall” was cut at the Columbia studio on July 19, 1967. Complete session reels for “Water Babies”, “Nefertiti” and “Fall” are included in the box.

“Country Son”, heard in a unique previously unreleased rhythm section only rehearsal, was recorded at Columbia Studio B in New York City on May 15, 1968.

Miles Davis Quintet: Freedom Jazz Dance: The Bootleg Series, Vol 5 box set was produced for contemporary release by the multi Grammy Award winning team of Steve Berkowitz, Michael Cuscuna and Richard Seidel. The album was mixed from the original 4-track tapes and mastered by Grammy Award winning engineer Mark Wilder, Battery Studios, New York City, July 2016.

In addition to more than two hours of previously unreleased studio sessions, the collection includes “Blues in F (My Ding),” a rare and unique home recording featuring Miles, demonstrating on piano a new blues he was working on to Wayne Shorter.

Miles Davis Quintet: Freedom Jazz Dance: The Bootleg Series, Vol 5 includes revelatory behind-the-scenes liner notes penned by Grammy Award-winning Ashley Kahn, author of Kind of Blue: The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece, as well as new interviews with Quintet members Ron Carter and Wayne Shorter.

Sourced from original four-track analog session reels and master tapes transferred and mixed in high resolution at 24-bit/192 kHz, Miles Davis Quintet: Freedom Jazz Dance: The Bootleg Series, Vol 5 offers a profound and intimate look at Miles’ creative process in the studio, providing insight into the bold new musical directions Davis and members of his quintet would take as the 1960s drew to a close.
