Nick Walters - Singularity (January 28, 2022 D.O.T. Records)

Nick Walters returns to his D.O.T. Records imprint with a suite of forward thinking, cosmic, electronic-jazz experiments, inspired by NASA & the concept of gravitational singularity. Each track on “Singularity”, his first home studio produced album, is built around an audio sample recorded by NASA in space, then expertly transported back to earth by Walters via some magical trumpet and synth work on his newly purchased Juno-106. The album features key contributions from Ruby Rushton drummer Tim Carnegie, 22a Music’s Tenderlonious on flute and some sublime guitar work from Thibaut Remy.

'Singularity' is an album inspired by the concept of the gravitational singularity, thought to be found at the centre of black holes, and also thought to be the initial state of the universe at the beginning of the Big Bang. These are the points where current scientific understanding breaks down, where general relativity meets quantum mechanics and current theories are unable to comprehend how density or the curvature of spacetime can reach infinite levels. The album is dedicated to Professor Roger Penrose, the scientist who alongside Stephen Hawking did so much to develop theoretical understanding of singularities and black holes, and rightful recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2020.
Each of the tracks features an audio sample recorded by NASA and made available for download and further artistic use. They include samples taken by the Cassini spacecraft as it studied Jupiter, Saturn, and their many moons, whistler waves picked up by NASA's Van Allen Probe as it passed around Earth, and interstellar plasma sounds picked up by the Voyager probe after leaving the Solar System.

The tracks grew gradually over time in an organic process, with key assistance provided by Ruby Rushton drummer Tim Carnegie, whose powerful and lively drumming added real impetus and energy to the programmed drum parts. Tenderlonious also added beautifully melodic flute parts to four of the tracks, and Thibaut Remy also contributed with some tasty guitar. The icing on the cake was the purchase of a Juno-106, which provided a load of spacey synth sounds perfect for the realisation of the project.

The artwork by Lorna Robertson matches the music by utilising a NASA image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, combined with hand drawn elements inspired by the visual style of Kubrick's classic film '2001: A Space Odyssey'. She depicts on the front cover a spacecraft journeying towards a bright star, controlled by operating a Juno-106, the analog synth so important to the sound of the album. The reverse shows a spaceman, trumpet in hand, ready to leave the safety of the ship to explore whatever is to be found outside.

Ruby Rushton - Gideon's Way (June 4, 2021 22a)

Ruby Rushton return to 22a with a four track album teaser combining a fusion of sounds from across the jazz spectrum in their own distinctive style. The band have forged an instantly recognisable sound since their debut release ‘Two For Joy’ back in 2015, hitting the sweet spot by simultaneously sounding classic and forward-thinking.

The EP is fronted by virtuosic flute from bandleader Ed ‘Tenderlonious’ Cawthorne and soulful trumpet by Nick Walters, who combine with tight catchy leads and fierce solo work. Aidan Shepherd underpins the operation with slick synth and key work whilst Tim Carnegie delivers a suite of tight knit drum breaks.

‘Spanish Raga’ opens the EP, inspired by an evening out after a gig in Madrid in 2019. Always unpredictable, the tune moves from delicate flute melodies to punchy synth bass and drum grooves, with a Raga inspired flute interlude in the middle.

‘Fall From Grace’ is a melancholic jazz folk song. Inspired by the current uncertainty we all face. It winds through a complex horn line driven by explosive drums.

The EP title track ‘Gideon’s Way’ carries on the cinematic “cop music" theme from the bands 2019 LP ‘Ironside’, taking inspiration from ITV’s sixties cop classic ‘Gideon’s Way’.

Latin-jazz roller ‘The Good Mixer’ closes out the EP in energetic fashion, with a nod to Dingwalls and other closed Camden watering holes. A free-wheeling, playful tune with combined flute and trumpet solos nodding to the Charles Mingus approach of ensemble playing, elevated by Carnegie’s drum grooves. ‘Gideon’s Way’ leaves the door ajar for the fifth Ruby Rushton album, scheduled for release later this year.

Beats & Pieces Big Band - ten (EFPI RECORDS 2018)

On 27 January 2008 I asked thirteen friends and fellow students to a rehearsal room at Manchester's Royal Northern College of Music to play through some tunes I'd written for big band. From that session, Beats & Pieces Big Band emerged. Exactly ten years on from that first meeting, we invited an audience of friends, family and key supporters to the same RNCM rehearsal space for a special anniversary gig, documented here. On behalf of all the Beats & Pieces musicians past and present, thanks for a fun first ten years; we hope there'll be many more to come.

Tenderlonious - THE SHAKEDOWN featuring The 22archestra (22a Music June 15, 2018)

22a label founder, flautist, saxophonist, producer and DJ extraordinaire Ed Cawthorne - aka Tenderlonious - has gained a reputation as one of the hardest working, most well respected and influential figures in South London’s burgeoning jazz scene.

Whether dropping sought-after deep house / broken beat 12”s on 22a, releasing via the likes of Ninja Tune, Brownswood, Yoruba Sounds Of The Universe and Far Out, or making inspirational sounds with his other band Ruby Rushton, Tenderlonious is one of the jazz renaissance’s leading lights.

He has helped turn the UK music scene on its head and shifted the focus back from aesthetic and sartorial posturing to live real musicianship, alongside other key piers like Moses Boyd, Nubya Garcia, Henry Wu/Kamaal Williams and Shabaka Hutchins.

Tenderlonious’ credentials in both electronic and jazz worlds are impeccable. He already has a Solid Steel Radio, a monthly slot on Gilles Petersons Worldwide FM mix and NTS shows under his belt, whilst his productions have gained praise and club plays from Gilles Peterson, Benji B, Huey Morgan, Lefto, Bradley Zero, Bonobo, Soul Clap, Osunlade, Alexander Nut. Mr G, Henry Wu and Banoffee Pies.

The Shakedown is Ed’s debut album proper as Tenderlonious and features a new band - the dream team of top talent he named the 22archestra, who he leads seamlessly throughout. Listeners are exposed to the full breadth of Cawthorne’s technical and compositional skills, ranging from subtly meandering jazz, to hip-hop, afrobeat, Latin and exhilarating free form jazz.

SV Disco, a nod to the mighty Slum Village, is a chunk of sensually-contorted disco vibes that brings on full party mode instantaneously, with the slinky bass licks and pitch-bent synthesiser recalling Roy Ayres’s blissed-out funk, blended with flute flurries reminiscent of mind Max Cilla’s La Flûte des Mornes.

Maria showcases Ed’s roots as sample-based producer, pulling influence from around the globe to create an undulating piece of flute-led Brazilian fusion that fans of Ruby Rushton will find familiar. The eastern-inspired embellishments raise the temperature further, whilst former Yussef Kamaal member Yussef Dayes’ sizzling cymbals and shuffling snare work propel the track onwards, locking down a signature 22a groove.

Latin and African influence can be heard across many of the tracks. Togo is a smoky afrobeat jam that leaves space for Tenderlonious’ flute to soar above, his playing mimicking old school styles you might catch from MF Doom or J Dilla.

Yussef’s Groove kicks off with driving drums, and each of the 22archestra enter steadily, fully utilising their virtuosic power, switching between low-slung bass, chic open piano solos and hazy electric piano.

The Shakedown exercises more restraint, with Bitches Brew style ambience providing a palpable sense of anticipation and passion, whilst still retaining that stomping, low-riding 70s swing they do so well.

The 22archestra was conceived after Tenderlonious was invited to record at Abbey Road Studios. The whole crew was rounded-up and the album was recorded during a single 8 hour session – a testament to their musicianship and ability to nail a take, which has been honed on stage.

Live performances include sessions for Red Bull and Boiler Room, shows for Jazz Re:freshed, House of Vans, Dulwich Picture Gallery and Worldwide FM’s 2017 birthday party, plus a support slot for Ethio jazz legend Malatu Astatke at The Barbican. Crowds have also been wowed in Paris, Milan, Brussels, Croatia and Amsterdam.

22a is an independent record label founded in London in 2013. Born out of a duty to release their music, the focus is on a collective family of artists sharing work through the vehicle of the label, for the love of the music itself. 22a is firmly establishing itself as one of the leading independent labels in the UK, with a consistent output of quality releases spanning house, hip hop, broken beat, rare groove and jazz. They are residents on Worldwide FM and hosted and sold out the re-launch of Jazz Cafe in 2016.
