After an extended absence, Jimmy O'Connell returns with a cover of Cedar Walton's "Bolivia" from his new Outside In Music Arrhythmia. Jimmy's Sixtet features his trombone, Andrew Gould's alto, Tim Bason's guitar and Tuomo Usilato's piano. Harold López-Nussa ~ El Viaje (2016 Mack Avenue/KARI-ON Productions) follows performing Nussa's "Africa," a title used by many composers including Toto and John Coltrane. Pianist and background vocalist Harold's Latin-tinged piano trio includes Alune Wade (b) and Adrián López Ruy-Nussa (d). Trombonist Steve Turre's Colors for the Masters (Smoke Sessions Records 2016) covers Wayne Shorter's "United" with help from Kenny Barron (p), Javon Jackson (ts) and Ron Carter (b) and Jimmy Cobb (d). Stan Getz gets together with valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer in a delightful cover of Irving Berlin's "Love and the Weather" from Stan's 1957 Verve Getz '57. Pianist John Williams solos backed by Teddy Kotick (b) and Frank Isola (d).
A variety of duos occupy the second half-hour beginning with my favorite, Dick Katz's "Checkerboard" from The Lee Konitz Duets released by Milestone in 1958. The contrapuntal number features Lee's alto and Dick Katz's piano. New from nWog Records 2016 comes Franco-Serbian Bojan Z and German Nils Wogram's Housewarming. Boran's piano and Nils' trombone tackle the mutually improvised "Les Parents," a tribute, I'm guessing, to their parents. From Erik Truffaz's 2002 EMI Imports' Mantis we get the trumpeter dueling with guitarist Manu Codjia in the Truffaz penned "Yasmina." Chick Corea has some fun with vocalist Bobby McFerrin in a performance of Corea's "Armando's Rhumba" from Chick's 2003 Stretch Rendezvous in New York. Finally we have Sweden's Lars Danielsson connecting with Poland's Leszek Mozdzer in a bass/piano duet of their penned "Pasodoble" from their 2007ACT Music Pasodoble (a dance modeled after the sound, drama, and movement of the Spanish and Portuguese bullfight).
The Bad Plus returns to the show with a cover of Peter Gabriel's "Games Without Frontiers" from its Okeh/Sony Masterworks It's Hard. The piano trio features regulars Dave King (d), Ethan Iverson (p) and Billy Peterson (d). Tenor saxophonists Jerry Bergonzi's Spotlight on Standards (Savant Records 2016) is next with Bergonzi's somewhat altered Miles Davis standard "Bi-Solar" featuring Renato Chicco's organ and Andrea Michelutti's drums. Bob Brookmeyer makes a second appearance tonight with a cover of Dorothy Fields and Jerome Kern's "The Way You Look Tonight" from Bob Brookmeyer & Bill Evans - The Ivory Hunters (United Artists 1959). Both Bob and Bill are in top form backed up by Percy Heath (b) and Connie Kay (d) - both borrowed from the Modern Jazz Quartet. Finland pianist, Iiro Rantala, connects with Sweden's Lars Danielsson (b) and our own Peter Erskine (d) performing Rantala's "How Long Is Now?" from the new ACT Music release of the same name.
From her new Concord release, Sunkissed, Ashleigh Smith gets Romance cooking with her "Best Friends," a tune more hopeful than "Just Friends," a jazz standard written in 1931 by John Klenner and Sam M. Lewis. Enrico Rava & Renato Sellani keep love burning with a cover of Don Raye's "You Don't Know What Love Is" from their 2001 Philology Le Cose Inutili’ [Things Unnecessary], another trumpet/piano duo. Vocalist Al Kooper returns with Blood Sweat & Tears' debut album Child Is Father to the Man in a performance of his "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know." Guitarist Steve Katz and alto saxophonist Jerry Weiss solo. Karrin Allyson takes Chris Caswell's lyrics to Wayne Shorter's "Footprints" to come up with "Follow the Footprints" from her 2006 Concord Jazz release Footprints. Pianist Bruce Barth leads the ensemble. Since we're on Autumn's threshold, De Rose and Gallop's "Autumn Serenade" and Kurt Weil and Maxwell Anderson's "September Song" will conclude this special half-hour dedicated to lovers. The first comes from Dave King's (Sunnyside Records 2012) I've Been Ringing You with Bill Carrothers replacing Ethan Iverson in Bill's version of The Bad Plus. The second comes from the Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown 1954 EmArcy recording that features Clifford with seldom-heard Paul Quinichette's tenor and Herbie Mann's flute.
