Espécie de Trio

Hugo Raro - Piano
Filipe Teixeira - Contrabaixo

Elliott Sharp, Mary Halvorson & Marc Ribot - Err Guitar (INTAKT RECORDS 2017)

Last summer in Elliott Sharp’s recording studio in Manhattan, New York guitarist Sharp spent a day with guitar colleague Mary Halvorson and another with Marc Ribot, legendary guitarist of Tom Waits, The Lounge Lizards and Marianne Faithful. The result was a series of recordings that could only be created by friends. They represent the great art of guitar playing by three exceptional musicians looking for new sonic adventures in search of the sound of our time.

“I hear in their playing both a step into an unknown future and wild growth from a deep past,” says Elliott Sharp. “The contradiction is resolved in improvisation – the transcendent sonic path of the now.”

Stephen Richard - After Hours (2017)

I named this project After Hours because me and my musical comrade SCEF were putting on a monthly show at spot in Houston called Bohemeo’s. We would feature various artists, through the course of this endeavor to provide original content to an audience I soon realized that me and my band began to play great original music after the show was over (after hours), those audience members that stuck around know exactly what I’m talking about. This project was created to capture those moments and secure them in time.

Paul Rossy - Jazz Poetry (The Music of Paul Rossy) 2017

The album Jazz Poetry: The Music of Paul Rossy is a reinterpretation of the songs from Dr. Paul Rossy’s album Goodbye Sings the Wind, launched last April in support of the Montreal Children’s Hospital.

Pediatrician by day, and musician by night, Paul Rossy recently sought out the expertise of singer-songwriter Ian Kelly to help him create an original album.  Last April, Dr. Rossy found a way to combine his two greatest passions by launching his very first album of original songs at a concert benefiting the Montreal Children’s Hospital, where he practises medicine.  The event was held April 29th, in a packed Corona Theatre, and allowed the singer-songwriter to raise funds thanks to all those present, and to the kind generosity of the Alan & Roula Rossy Family Foundation.

After performing at last year’s Montreal’s International Jazz Festival, Paul Rossy was inspired to put a jazz twist on his songs from the album Goodbye Sings the Wind.  He once again enlisted the help of Ian Kelly as producer; with arrangements by Joel Kerr, Jonathan Cayer, and Mark Nelson.

On the album, recorded at the Pierre Marchand Studio, you can hear: Joel Kerr on upright bass, Mark Nelson on drums, Jonathan Cayer on piano/keyboard, François Jalbert on guitar, Annie Dominique on saxophone, Alexis French on trumpet and flugelhorn, Jean-Nicolas Trottier on trombone, and Lévy Bourbonnais on harmonica.

The albums Jazz Poetry: The Music of Paul Rossy, and Goodbye Sings the Wind are available in stores now, and on digital platforms via Sunset Hill Music/Outside.  All profits go to the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Karen Asatrian - Prayer Wheel (Missa for Choir & Jazz Ensemble) 2017

PRAYER WHEEL

Messe für Chor & Jazz-Ensemble von Karen Asatrian

Im Rahmen der Salzburger Festspiele wird PRAYER WHEEL am 23. Juli 2016, um 14.30 Uhr, im Republic wiederaufgeführt. Der Live-Mitschnitt erscheint Anfang 2017 als CD bei Universal Austria.

Mitwirkende:
Philharmonia Chor Wien | Leitung: Davorin Mori
Rita Movsesian – Sologesang | Daniel Nösig – Trompete | Karen Asatrian – Piano | Uli Langthaler – Kontrabass | Emil Krištof – Schlagzeug

Balvig / Bülow / Christensen - Associated with Water (AMP Music & Records 2017)

The trio started as project band five years ago to explore jazz and improvisation - now they are ready with a debut album full of creative compositions, strong interplay and a unique band sound.

Associated with Water is an album made with a compositional approach that aims to float seemingly from jazz to classical to folk. It contains emotional impressionistic passages followed by groovy balkan bass-lines, modern jazz themes and Chopin-like rubato “islands”.

The trio has a collective vision; to fuse three individual artists and composers. Christian Balvig on the piano currently remarks himself as a composer and arranger working with major Scandinavian orchestras such as Copenhagen Philharmonics and Det Norske Blåsensemble. In this trio he gets the chance to truly shine as a pianist.

Frederik Bülow on the drums is the anchor of the trio with the most energetic and interactive passages to the most intense silences. He is busy on the nordic jazz scene because of his in depth understanding of a wide range of music.

Adrian Christensen on the bass completes the band sound. He has a very modern jazz sound and a lot of afro behind his drive” - Peter Rahbek (Jazz Special - November 2015). As co-leader of bands like Bangin Bülows Nice Jazz Quartet and Abekejser he is pushing jazz in new directions

To find a new direction in jazz is the main focus for this trio too. To develop small “islands” of musical invention and interaction that can enhance our nordic jazz sound. Also, to make poetic and energetic improvisational choices that suit the given composition in a non pretentious way.

Associated with Water was recorded and mixed by Jacob Worm in FinlandStudiet, Aarhus, Denmark January/February 2017.
