The Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra (with Jon Batiste & Wynton Marsalis) - The Music of John Lewis (BLUE ENGINE RECORDS 2017)

Few captured the sleek, swinging sophistication of jazz better than pianist, composer, and bandleader John Lewis, who had a long, deep, personal relationship with Jazz at Lincoln Center. “He used to always call our program a miracle,” says Wynton Marsalis. “He used to always say, ‘Keep that miracle going.’”

In 2013, when the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis set out to honor the legacy of the Modern Jazz Quartet’s maestro, they teamed up with New Orleans’ own Jon Batiste. The bandleader of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and a prodigious pianist in his own right, Batiste joined the JLCO to tackle some of Lewis’s most iconic tunes during a sold-out concert in Rose Theater, the House of Swing.

From the blistering bebop of “Two Bass Hit” to the down-home blues of “2 Degrees East, 3 Degrees West”—from small group configurations to the big band might of the full JLCO—The Music of John Lewis captures the elegance and soulfulness of Lewis’s daring compositions. The record also includes a four-movement suite pulled from the Modern Jazz Quartet’s classic recording, The Comedy.

“The depth of his belief makes his music timeless,” Batiste says of Lewis. “For artists, what remains impactful and meaningful in one’s art depends on the accuracy and intensity of your insights. Mr. Lewis's music is still with us, and it is an honor to place my artistry in the tradition of serving it. So put on this record, listen with your eyes closed, and engage your imagination.”

Brothers in Groove - B.I.G. (ANGAPP 2017)

The album B.I.G. is the sum of the life experiences of four musicians with a common denominator: the Black Music.

It is nine tracks mainly instrumental in which the four lay bare their own worlds, blending them into a better one… sublimated and sublimating the listener.

So starting from the black fingers of Howard supported by the pulse of Boccuzzi, enhanced by sound carpets Balice and super bit Celi, switching from influences of Robert Glasper to Snarky Puppy, from Bootsy Collins to Christian Scott and the powerful Roy Hargrove RH Factor, all overseen by King Davis.

In the song “Hope in a boat” dedicated to all migrants crossing the sea in a boat putting all the hopes and dreams of a better life, we find the pathos and ancestral memory of Fela Kuti legacies.
Not missing two songs sung: Never Alone pure Funk with the voice of Liliana Marzo and Scream Harder a song pop soul sung by drummer Walter Celi with the choirs of Paola Caterina.

Precious collaboration on disc of Paolo Pace on sax and flute, Vito Scavo Trombone and effects and Martha Montelongo Garcia from Mexico City with his violin on Funk Shui.

Have a nice trip and StayBig!

Tony Paeleman - Camera Obscura (SHED MUSIC 2017)

Torben Westergaard - Tangofied III (GATEWAY MUSIC 2017)

The creative process leading to a particular product often first reveals itself afterward, i.e. when it has occurred. From the outcome, it all of a sudden becomes clearer in which way causalities led to the result. I had in no way planned that the Tangofied releases should end up as a trilogy. It just happened that way; the first CD brought about the other two.

Tangofied (2012), was recorded in Buenos Aires with Argentine musicians in collaboration with pianist and arranger Diego Schissi. It is heavily inspired by the sounds of Astor Piazzolla’s last releases, and it’s dramatic chamber musical expressiveness featuring the archetypical Argentine instrument the bandoneón. Tangofied II was more inspired by Argentinean folk music and was partly recorded in Buenos Aires in collaboration with Ernesto Snajer and Mariano ‘Tiki’ Cantero, partly in Denmark with my usual band. Both releases were nominated for Danish Music Award — Jazz in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

The current release, Tangofied III, has finally returned at home in every way. It is recorded only using my Danish band The Tangofied Ensemble plus added collaborations with different musical friends: Peter Rosendal (piano), Anders Singh Vester Dahl (accordion), Andrea Pellegrini (vocals) and Benedikte Artved (viola).

Overall, one could ask, from where the music in the Tangofied trilogy springs. It is not easy to give a brief, let alone meaningful answer to this question. Therefore, let it just be noted that I sense a kinship between the melancholia in Nordic jazz and the elegiac nostalgia of Argentinian tango music. There is something in that crossfield which reaches out to me – and I just followed this hunch without too much-organized reflection or ulterior motive. The focal point was: can I  create a meaningful hybrid halfway between the two genres?

If the project succeeds, I will leave up to you to decide. For myself, the Tangofeid trilogy — using a Japanese reviewer words about Tangofied II, — is “not a mere research project into the nature of Argentine tango. Rather, it is Torben’s search for himself, through ten Compositional jewels that invite the listener into a new world “(The Walker’s, Japan, 2014).
